Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13

Lenovo’s not a company that’s afraid to take design risks, not unlike Sony in its heyday. The Yoga laptop with its 360 degree hinge was one of the few very successful Windows 8 convertible designs, and Lenovo brought a different interpretation to their Yoga Android and Windows tablets. They have a cylindrical battery at the bottom that not only allows for a bigger battery but also provides a hand hold and mounting point for the swiveling stand. It’s an excellent design, but first gen models were hampered by mediocre specs. The Yoga Tablet 2 line improves display quality and specs while maintaining a moderate price tag. More importantly, the specs are now worthy of Lenovo’s excellent industrial design. In this review we look at the largest Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows, the 13.3″ model. Clearly at that size, it’s a laptop replacement as well as a tablet, and the keyboard is included in the price (currently $599). For those who want something more portable, Lenovo sells 10 and 8 inch variants with largely similar specs.

The Windows Yoga Tablet 2 13″ model runs on a 1.33 GHz quad core Intel Atom CPU with 4 gigs of RAM rather than the usual paltry 2 gigs for Atom tablets. Though this is a 64 bit CPU, Lenovo ships it with Windows 8.1 32 bit, and it has 64 gigs of internal solid state eMMC storage. Despite the low price tag and Atom CPU, the Yoga Tablet 2 13″ with Windows has a striking IPS 2560 x 1440 touch screen that’s sharp, bright and colorful. Other features include dual band WiFi 802.11n, Bluetooth, stereo speakers with a JBL subwoofer on the rear and a front webcam.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows

The Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows is finished in black and at first blush you’d think the casing was all metal. The back is actually plastic while the swiveling stand is metal. It looks classy, feels solid and is attractive and modern. It would look good on a modern home design set, something we can’t say of many tablets and 2-in-1 laptops. The 13″ model is very thin and it weighs 2.27 lbs., though the weight rises to 3.2 lbs. with the included keyboard. That makes it as heavy as the lighter 13″ Ultrabooks on the market, so you’re not saving weight but rather money since it’s less expensive than most Ultrabooks. That keyboard acts as a cover for the display and it’s rigid and finished in matching black. The Yoga Tablet 2 looks like a slim Ultrabook with the keyboard attached via weak magnets. Since they communicate wirelessly using Bluetooth, you don’t need to physically connect the keyboard to the tablet. For those who wish to stand the tablet on a desk and use the keyboard in their lap, this is appealing. Likewise if you’re using the tablet for a presentation and want to keep the keyboard closer to you—no problem. Note that unlike the Android Yoga Tablet 2 Pro 13″ model, there’s no built-in Pico projector. It seems that Lenovo got it backwards here: Windows business users would likely rather have the projector for presentations. I’ve yet to find a good use for the projector in the Android model, other than the novelty of boring folks with vacation movies.

Keyboard

The bundled keyboard is slim yet rigid, and it inspires more confidence than the Surface Pro Type Cover, though honestly the Pro Type Cover actually provides nearly as good a typing experience as the Lenovo’s island style keyboard (that’s a compliment to Microsoft and not a dig at Lenovo’s keyboard). The keyboard has good tactile feel and is less clacky sounding than the Surface Pro Cover, and even better—you don’t have to pay extra for it. Like most Bluetooth keyboards, it lacks backlighting and you’ll have to charge it every so often with the micro USB charger. Score two points for the more expensive MS Surface Pro 3: its keyboard is backlit and requires no charging, though it must remain physically connected to the tablet. We had no problems with the Yoga Tablet keyboard’s Bluetooth connection and it was ready to go every time we booted the tablet (do remember to turn the keyboard on—it has a tiny switch on the side). You can use the tablet with the keyboard magnetically attached on your lap since the stand is fairly deep, but it doesn’t feel extremely steady.

Performance and Horsepower

Given the Intel Atom Z3745 CPU, this isn’t a tablet-laptop hybrid for heavy lifting. The 1.33 GHz CPU with boost to 1.86 GHz is perfectly adequate for MS Office, social networking, web and photo editing. It’s not the ideal choice for software development, 1080p photo editing (beyond recreational use) or calculating huge spreadsheets. Even Ultrabooks with Intel Core CPUs aren’t an ideal choice for cutting edge 3D gaming, forget about the Atom and Intel HD integrated graphics. It’s fine for Modern UI Live Tile games and casual games. Where the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows has an advantage over other budget Windows Intel Atom tablets is RAM. It has a very workable 4 gigs of RAM rather than the usual 2 gigs, and that makes multitasking more fluid, though the CPU may chug a bit when juggling 3 programs. The relatively large and high resolution display (by tablet standards) also makes multitasking easier because you’ve got more screen real estate to balance two windows side-by-side. The 64 gigs of solid state storage (not as fast as an SSD, rather more akin to an SD card) is adequate for a machine of this caliber—you probably won’t install every PC program you own and it might even be your secondary machine for work and play on the go, so big storage is less of a concern. Since Windows and associated programs take up space as does the recovery partition, you’re left with ~43 gigs free out of the box. The tablet has a microSD card slot where you can store movies, music and all manner of data, but Windows won’t let you install programs to a removable card without a registry hack.

Nice Display and Speakers

The QHD IPS display is a strong selling point, and one this large and high resolution is certainly an unexpected treat in a tablet this inexpensive. The 2560 x 1440 display works well at 150% scaling and it’s a good compromise between seeing text easily and getting a bigger view of web pages and spreadsheets.

Thanks to the built-in stand, it simply begs to be your Netflix and Amazon Prime video machine, and the side-facing speakers and rear JBL subwoofer do a good job with audio. The speakers are loud enough to fill a small room and audio isn’t as thin as the average tablet. There’s a 3.5mm combo audio jack for those who prefer headphones or external speakers.

Battery Life

Thanks to the cylindrical battery design that allows for a simply huge 12,800 mAh battery and the power-sipping Atom CPU, Lenovo manages to get seriously good battery life from the tablet. Though they claim an optimistic 15 hours of actual use time, we clocked closer to 11 with brightness at 40% and WiFi + Bluetooth active. Compared to most 13″ laptops that’s extremely good and it even beats many 10″ tablets. For the low requirements road warrior who doesn’t engage in computationally demanding tasks but does need stellar battery life, the tablet is a good fit. It never gets blazing hot on the back and it’s silent thanks to the fanless design.

Conclusion

If you want the creature comforts of a laptop in a tablet—big screen, 4 gigs of RAM, full Windows and a traditional keyboard but don’t need the more powerful CPUs in Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and Ultrabooks like Lenovo’s own Yoga 3 Pro convertible, the 13″ Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows is one of the few crossover tablets that fits the bill. It’s considerably less expensive than Surface Pro and Ultrabooks that hover around $1,000 and it lasts longer on a charge than most (the MacBook Air and Dell XPS 13 non-touch are the only two that rival it). That said, it lacks the horsepower to be a main machine for home and business users unless requirements are very easy going. If you simply do the web, email, Office and streaming full HD video (and not necessarily all at once), it’s capable enough. Just don’t expect it to be the ideal machine for Photoshop, Visual Studio, Eclipse or frequent 1080p video editing jobs.

Shoppers and PC bachelors beware. It only takes a few moments to fall in love with a good-looking PC. Productivity minded buyers and PC lovers are always looking for that next must-have the device: the PC that’ll offer them plenty of versatility, with a design that they just have to try for themselves. The Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch is such a PC.

The $599 Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch was one of the first devices I outright demanded to test after a run in with it at CES 2015 when noted its uncouth barrel-like edge.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch (1)

Here Lenovo was, gunning for Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 convertible with as much determination as we’ve seen from any Windows hardware maker. I didn’t just want to try this PC, I had to try its design out for myself and evaluate it; and it’s with a heavy heart that I must declare outright that both positives and negatives are present here.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch Review – Design

The Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13 is definitely a looker. We now live in a world where Microsoft, the maker of Windows, creates its own hardware and software. PC makers needed to step their game up if they hoped to compete seriously. The Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13 is a Surface killer in looks and on paper.

A sort of metal barrel forms the bottom of the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13. Everything users need from the tablet springs from that barrel. A display sits above the circular area of a sharp 13-inch high-definition display with a 2560 x 1440 display and a front-facing web camera. Sitting in between the bottom of the device and that screen is a touch-sensitive Windows button. On the ends of that barrel are the essential ports. One headphone jack and microHDMI out sit on the right. On the left edge are a circular power button and a microUSB port and volume control.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch (11)

Push a button on the Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows’s rear above the subwoofer and a durable metal kickstand pops out. There’s a single speaker back there too. When closed the subwoofer and kickstand form an almost flush back. The subwoofer cut out is used for those looking to hang the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch on a hook for better viewing angles. Everything about the tablet itself feels solid and sturdy, though prone to scratches and nicks if the unthinkable happens and it falls.

What immediately drew me to the Yoga tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch was its design flourishes and aesthetics. But I also need the essentials. A few weeks of use quickly had me reconsidering whether the Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows was something I was down for long term. I’m not a man who needs a lot of ports, but not having a single full-size USB port drove me insane. What’s more, I frequently found myself turning off the Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows because of its round power button.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch (7)

Above all else, the keyboard included with the Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch frustrated. In theory, everything should have been fine. It’s large and has physical keys so that touch typists will feel right at home. The whole keyboard and tablet combat close together like a book.

It misses the mark in so many other ways, though. For starters, it’s Bluetooth, meaning when you forget to turn it off – and you will because the power button isn’t exactly obvious – you’ll need to charge it from the Yoga Tablet 2 itself with a cable. This fine, except, if both devices should happen to be dead at the same time you’re in trouble. Second, the keyboard had way too much flex for me, particularly under the trackpad, which has no support underneath. As you click on things it happily bounces a bit. Its worse offense is its magnet though. Microsoft included strong magnets to snap its Surface covers until place for notebook-like use in the lap. The Yoga Tablet 2 13-inch with Windows has this too, but it’s not nearly strong enough. I dropped the keyboard simply carrying the device. It frequently slipped out-of-place in my lap too.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch Review – Internals & Performance

PC prices are falling fast, and $599 certainly can get you a lot more than what it could a few years ago. Unfortunately, it feels like the savings hasn’t trickled down yet in the case of the Yoga Tablet 2.

An Intel Atom processor that’s capable of boosting all the way to 1.86 GHz and 4GB of RAM powers the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch. That rear-facing subwoofer and two side speakers, drive audio output. There’s 64GB of storage and the option to add more with a microSD card slot. A front-facing web camera and a battery able to keep it running for 15-hours completes the experience. By simple tablet standards, it’s a monster.

But you can’t really judge the Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch by tablet standards. The Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch runs a full version of Windows, meaning it can run desktop apps. Its 13.3-inch display and included Bluetooth keyboard telegraph its ambition to be a top-rated 2-in-1. That’s where Lenovo runs into trouble.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch (4)

The Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13 inch costs $599. It is definitely more expensive than most simple notebooks with better processors. It wasn’t until running Google’s Chrome browser with seven tabs open that I realized that Intel Atom and Windows 8.1 don’t sometimes agree with each other. Everything would open quickly, then start to load very slowly. There are full-cost notebooks that provide better performance for that money, even if they don’t look as attractive. To Lenovo’s credit, the Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows is $200 less than the Surface Pro 3 and includes a keyboard. That being said, the Surface Pro 3 has an Intel Core i3 processor for $799. It’s way more powerful that what you get here.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch (12)

Stepping away from raw power, one thing Lenovo delivers on is an entertainment experience. The rounded edge of the Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13 inch makes reading in portrait more comfortable than other tablets because there’s something there to grip besides a flat edge. Videos on this high-definition display look absolutely gorgeous. Video playback time impressed me too, I easily hit around 8 or 9 hours of video streaming and web browsing with the Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch. That’s not as high as the company’s estimates, but I tend to keep brightness up a bit. I was delighted to find that Lenovo turns on zooming effects in Windows 8.1 by default. This makes everything on-screen easier to touch and interact with.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch Review – Conclusion

It’s hard not to recommend the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-inch for certain buyers. It’s gorgeous to look at. It attracts stares and you frequently have to remind yourself that this is your PC.

Then there are other times, when it shows its issues. I like the device itself, but hate the included keyboard. In tablet mode I frequently turned it off by accident because of the awkwardly positioned power button. No full size USB ports means it doesn’t talk to your mice and other accessories.

For users who need an entertainment tablet with a big display, there are better options. For users looking for a next-generation 2-in-1 there are better, but not cheaper options.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-Inch

The Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 13-Inch is the largest member of the Yoga Tablet 2 family, which also includes 10″ and 8″ versions. Alongside the bigger 13.3″ display, the slate delivers a better screen resolution than on the smaller siblings: 2560 x 1440 instead of 1920×1200.

The Yoga Tablet 2 series sports an innovative design with a kickstand, which enables the device to stand or hang, and cylinder-shaped battery. The 13.3-inch model is no exception. Obviously, it is larger and heavier, weighing in at 2.3 pounds without the keyboard which is included in the package. Weight is the main drawback in comparison to the much lighter 10-inch 1.4-pound variant.

All three versions feature IPS wide viewing angle technology and are based on the Intel Atom “Bay Trail” Z3745 processor. The 13-Inch is better equipped, since it has 4GB of RAM memory instead of 2GB, and 64GB of internal storage instead of 32GB. Overall, enough power for the basic tasks of the average user who surfs the web, edits Office documents, and watches movies. Sound is delivered through frontal stereo speakers enhanced with large chambers and Dolby Audio technology.

Lenovo has omitted the rear camera you can find on the smaller models. There’s only a camera on the front, with a 1.6MP sensor. The tablet also has Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth connections, a microSD memory card reader, micro HDMI video port, micro USB port, and a combo audio jack.

The battery life is up to 15 hours, according to Lenovo’s estimation.
