В результате новое приложение Xbox для Windows 10 и Windows 11 скоро станет единственным официальным приложением Microsoft для консолей Xbox на Windows.

Напомним, приложение Xbox Console Companion дебютировало в 2014 году как Windows 10 Xbox, в июне 2019 года Microsoft переименовала приложение в Xbox Console Companion, одновременно изменился значок приложения, который стал выглядеть как консоль Xbox One. 

На обновлённой странице поддержки приложения Xbox для Windows сообщается, что приложение Xbox Console Companion получит статус «нерекомендуемого» 28 августа 2023 года и его поддержка прекратится. Пользователям будет предложено перейти на более современное приложение Xbox, которое позволяет владельцам ПК загружать и играть в компьютерные игры, удалённо играть на ПК в консольные игры Xbox и многое другое.

Xbox Console Companion (originally known just as the Xbox app) is a Windows app for Windows 10 PCs that allows the user to view and purchase Xbox One games, view achievements and captures from their games and access and post Xbox Live community content. The app’s biggest feature, however, is the ability to connect to the users Xbox One console and stream all video output directly to the app.

The app is the second iteration of an Xbox Windows app, with the first being the Xbox One SmartGlass app which was succeeded by the Xbox Console Companion app sometime during 2016.

In 2019, this Xbox app was rebranded to the Xbox Console Companion app as Microsoft prepared to release yet another Xbox app for Windows PC’s with integrated Game Pass for PC functionality that allowed the app to be used as a game launcher. Initially the app was missing many of the social and community features of the Xbox Console Companion app but these were implemented in future updates. Despite these updates the new Xbox app does not include the ability to connect to a console and stream content from it.

When launched, the Xbox Console Companion app prompts the user to download the newer Xbox app for Windows, despite this all features within the app are still fully functional. However, the app does not allow connections with Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles meaning that these consoles cannot yet be streamed to PCs.
