    В отличии от счастливых пользователей Linux и MacOS, где Python поставляется вместе с дистрибутивом, пользователям Windows нужно его устанавливать самостоятельно. Но процесс этот не сложнее, чем установка, например, браузера.

    Итак, для начала идём на страницу загрузок версий для Windows официального сайта Python: https://www.python.org/downloads/windows/
    Первые две ссылки ведут на файлы актуальных на текущий момент версий (2.7.12 и 3.5.2). Переходим по ссылке на нужную нам версию Python и выбираем нужный нам файл. В случае версии 2.7 для Windows нас интересуют файлы подписанные как Windows x86-64 MSI installer и Windows x86 MSI installer. Если у вас 64х битная ОС, выбирайте первый, для 32х битной ОС — второй.

    Для справки: если у вас Windows 7 или новее — с вероятностью в 99% у вас 64 бита.

    У версии 3.5 вариантов больше: для 64х бит — это Windows x86-64 executable installer и Windows x86-64 web-based installer, а для 32х бит — Windows x86 executable installer и Windows x86 web-based installer.
    Разница в том, что executable сразу содержит все необходимые пакеты, а web-based будет их скачивать уже в процессе установки.

    Далее просто скачиваем инсталятор и устанавливаем Python, как обычную программу.

    Инсталятор помимо самого интерпретатора Python установит также его командную строку (Shell) и простой редактор кода — IDLE. Их можно будет найти в меню Пуск.
    Командная строка позволяет работать с Python в интерактивном режиме, то есть немедленно выполнять введённый код по нажатию Enter, а IDLE — это редактор кода с интегрированным интерпретатором, который позволяет запускать код из редактируемого файла прямо в редакторе.

    IDLE, конечно, лучше, чем писать код в блокноте, но я настоятельно рекомендую установить PyCharm! Community версия абсолютно бесплатна и содержит весь необходимый для работы с Python функционал.

    Не получается установить питон на виндовс. Выдает ошибку что не найден какой то файл. не успеваю сделать скриншот, окно закрывается. есть альтернативы?

    Надо смотреть версию Окошек и установлены ли всё сервис паки, если выдаёт ошибку

    Ничего страшного, просто попробуйте поставить более старшую версию, она заработает. И напоминаю, на всякий случай, что Python 2.x и Python 3.x — это сильно различающиеся языки, не взаимозаменяемы!

    Это не совсем так (или даже, скорее, совсем не так).
    Код написанный под двойку может работать на тройке вообще без изменений или с минимальными правками. В обратную сторону ситуация похожая, если не использовать новые фичи тройки.
    И большинство библиотек обычно автоматически поддерживают обе версии без необходимости дополнительных действий.

  1. Откройте Microsoft Store и нажмите на кнопку «Поиск».

    2. Открыть поиск для установки Python через Microsoft Store в Windows 10

  2. Напечатайте в строке python, затем выберите результат из всплывающего меню ниже – для Windows 10 подходят варианты «Python 3.7» и «Python 3.8».

    3. Найти приложение для установки Python через Microsoft Store в Windows 10

  3. После загрузки страницы приложения нажмите «Получить» («Get»).

    4. Загрузить приложение для установки Python через Microsoft Store в Windows 10

Что делать, если Python не устанавливается

Порой казалось бы элементарная процедура даёт сбой, и рассматриваемый пакет ПО отказывается устанавливаться. Рассмотрим самые частые причины этой проблемы.

  3. В некоторых случаях после установки и последующей перезагрузки не запускается служба среды Python. Для её активации вручную запустите «Командную строку»: напишите в «Поиске» запрос cmd, затем выберите вариант запуска от имени администратора.

How to Install Python on Windows? [7 Easy Steps]

Python is the fastest-growing major programming language in the world. Want to participate as a Python coder and install Python on your Windows machine? Here are the seven steps to install Python on Windows:

  1. Visit website “Python Releases for Windows”: https://www.python.org/downloads/windows/
  2. Click link “Download Windows x86-64 executable installer” under “Stable Releases” header.
  3. A popup opens. Click “Save File”.
  4. Wait until the download completes and double click on the installer file to run it.
  5. Another popup appears. Select “Add Python to Path” and click “Install Now”.
  6. Wait until the installation completes “Setup was successful”.
  7. You can now use Python on your Windows computer: use the Windows Search for “IDLE” and open the standard Python editor to start coding.

I created a screenshot series to visually assist you with those seven steps. The steps may slightly deviate from the given below (it depends on the browser, your Windows version, and the Python version you install.

The official Python website hosts all Python releases. Make sure that you download the stable release from the official Python website to protect yourself against malicious software sources. Here’s the official download link where you can get the latest stable release:

There are multiple links to choose from. Usually, the best way to install Windows on your machine is to do the following.

Click Link “Download Windows x86-64 executable installer”

The executable installer is the standard way of installing programs on your Windows machine (.exe). There are two:

  • Windows x86-64 executable installer
  • Windows x86 executable installer

The former is for all 64-bit machines. The latter is for all 32-bit machines. In all likelihood, you’ve got a 64-bit machine.

To check whether you’re using a 32-bit or 64–bit version of Windows 10, open the Settings app by pressing Windows+I, and then head to System > About. On the right side, look for the “System type” entry. (source)

Click “Save File”

Note that it may take a few seconds until the button “Save File” becomes clickable. Just make sure that the popup is at the front by clicking on the popup.

Click on the Installer File (.exe)

This is the installer executable file that will install Python and all its dependencies on your computer. Click it.

Select “Add Python to Path” and click “Install Now”

Adding Python to your PATH variable is common practice in Windows. It means that you can run Python anywhere on your computer (without giving the concrete location of the program).

For example, the command python --version to check your Python version will run anywhere in your shell (no matter the current folder).

After a few minutes, the following popup will appear:

Congratulations! You’ve installed Python on your Windows machine! 🙂

Windows Search for “IDLE” and Open the Standard Python Editor

You write Python code in a program called “Editor”. There are many different Python editors but with your Python installation comes your default Python editor IDLE. It’s as good as any editor to write your first program!

After opening the IDLE program, you can run your first code:

Язык программирования Python считается достаточно простым. На нем легче и быстрее пишутся программы, по сравнению с компилируемыми языками программирования. Для Python существует множество библиотек, позволяющих решать практически любые задачи. Есть, конечно, и минусы и другие нюансы, но это отдельная тема.

Довольно часто я вижу, как мои знакомые и друзья начинают изучать Python и сталкиваются с проблемой установки и использования сторонних библиотек. Они могут несколько часов потратить на установку библиотеки, и даже, могут не справиться с этим и забить на неё. В то время как, в большинстве случаев, это можно было сделать за несколько минут.

Статья начинается с базовых вещей: с установки Python 3, инструментов разработки Pip и Virtualenv и среды разработки PyCharm в Windows и в Ubuntu. Для многих это не представляет трудностей и возможно, что уже всё установлено.

После чего будет то, ради чего задумывалась статья, я покажу как в PyCharm создавать и использовать виртуальные окружения и устанавливать в них библиотеки с помощью Pip.

Установка Python и Pip

Pip является менеджером пакетов для Python. Именно с помощью него обычно устанавливаются модули/библиотеки для разработки в виде пакетов. В Windows Pip можно установить через стандартный установщик Python. В Ubuntu Pip ставится отдельно.

Для windows заходим на официальную страницу загрузки, где затем переходим на страницу загрузки определенной версии Python. У меня используется Python 3.6.8, из-за того, что LLVM 9 требует установленного Python 3.6.

Далее в таблице с файлами выбираем «Windows x86-64 executable installer» для 64-битной системы или «Windows x86 executable installer» для 32-битной. И запускаем скачанный установщик, например, для версии Python 3.8.1 он называется python-3.8.1-amd64.exe.

Во время установки ставим галочку возле Add Python 3.x to PATH и нажимаем Install Now:

Установка Python и Pip в Ubuntu

В Ubuntu установить Python 3 можно через терминал. Запускаем его и вводим команду установки. Вторая команда выводит версию Python.

sudo apt install python3-minimal
python3 -V

Далее устанавливаем Pip и обновляем его. После обновления необходимо перезапустить текущую сессию (или перезагрузить компьютер), иначе возникнет ошибка во время вызова Pip.

sudo apt install python3-pip
pip3 install --user --upgrade pip

Основные команды Pip

Рассмотрим основные команды при работе с Pip в командой строке Windows и в терминале Ubuntu.

Если виртуальные окружения не используются, то во время установки пакета(ов) полезно использовать дополнительно ключ --user, устанавливая пакет(ы) локально только для текущего пользователя.

Установка VirtualEnv и VirtualEnvWrapper

VirtualEnv используется для создания виртуальных окружений для Python программ. Это необходимо для избежания конфликтов, позволяя установить одну версию библиотеки для одной программы, и другу для второй. Всё удобство использования VirtualEnv постигается на практике.

В командной строке выполняем команды:

pip install virtualenv
pip install virtualenvwrapper-win

Для Ubuntu команда установки будет следующей:

pip3 install --user virtualenv virtualenvwrapper

После которой в конец ~/.bashrc добавляем:

export VIRTUALENVWRAPPER_PYTHON=/usr/bin/python3
source ~/.local/bin/virtualenvwrapper.sh

При новом запуске терминала должны будут появиться сообщения, начинающиеся на virtualenvwrapper.user_scripts creating, что говорит об успешном завершении установки.

Работа с виртуальным окружением VirtualEnv

Рассмотрим основные команды при работе с VirtualEnv в командой строке Windows и в терминале Ubuntu.

Находясь в одном из окружений, можно ставить пакеты через Pip, как обычно и нет необходимости добавлять ключ --user:

pip3 install markdown

Для Windows можно указать в переменных среды WORKON_HOME для переопределения пути, где хранятся виртуальные окружения. По умолчанию, используется путь %USERPROFILE%Envs.

Установка PyCharm

PyCharm — интегрированная среда разработки для языка программирования Python. Обладает всеми базовыми вещами необходимых для разработки. В нашем случае огромное значение имеет хорошее взаимодействие PyCharm с VirtualEnv и Pip, чем мы и будем пользоваться.

Установка PyCharm в Windows

Скачиваем установщик PyCharm Community для Windows с официального сайта JetBrains. Если умеете проверять контрольные суммы у скаченных файлов, то не забываем это сделать.

В самой установке ничего особенного нету. По сути только нажимаем на кнопки next, и в завершение на кнопку Install. Единственно, можно убрать версию из имени папки установки, т.к. PyCharm постоянно обновляется и указанная версия в будущем станет не правильной.

Установка PyCharm в Ubuntu

Скачиваем установщик PyCharm Community для Linux с официального сайта JetBrains. Очень хорошей практикой является проверка контрольных сумм, так что если умеете, не ленитесь с проверкой.

Распаковываем архив с PyCharm и переименовываем папку с программой в pycharm-community, убрав версию из названия.

Теперь в директории ~/.local (Ctrl + H — Показ скрытый файлов), создаем папку opt, куда и перемещаем pycharm-community. В результате по пути /.local/opt/pycharm-community должны размещаться папки bin, help и т.д. Таким образом PyCharm будет находится в своём скромном месте и никому не будет мешать.

Далее выполняем команды в терминале:

cd /home/maksim/.local/opt/pycharm-community/bin
sh ./pycharm.sh

Производим установку. И очень важно в конце не забыть создать desktop файл для запуска PyCharm. Для этого в Окне приветствия в нижнем правом углу нажимаем на Configure → Create Desktop Entry.

PyCharm теперь можно устанавливать из snap-пакета. Если вы используете Ubuntu 16.04 или более позднюю версию, можете установить PyCharm из командной строки.

sudo snap install pycharm-community --classic

Использование VirtualEnv и Pip в PyCharm

Поддержка Pip и Virtualenv в PyCharm появилась уже довольно давно. Иногда конечно возникают проблемы, но взаимодействие работает в основном стабильно.

Рассмотрим два варианта работы с виртуальными окружениями:

  1. Создаём проект со своим собственным виртуальным окружением, куда затем будут устанавливаться необходимые библиотеки;
  2. Предварительно создаём виртуальное окружение, куда установим нужные библиотеки. И затем при создании проекта в PyCharm можно будет его выбирать, т.е. использовать для нескольких проектов.

Первый пример: использование собственного виртуального окружения для проекта

Создадим программу, генерирующую изображение с тремя графиками нормального распределения Гаусса Для этого будут использоваться библиотеки matplotlib и numpy, которые будут установлены в специальное созданное виртуальное окружение для программы.

Запускаем PyCharm и окне приветствия выбираем Create New Project.

В мастере создания проекта, указываем в поле Location путь расположения создаваемого проекта. Имя конечной директории также является именем проекта. В примере директория называется ‘first_program’.

Далее разворачиваем параметры окружения, щелкая по Project Interpreter. И выбираем New environment using Virtualenv. Путь расположения окружения генерируется автоматически. В Windows можно поменять в пути папку venv на Envs, чтобы команда workon находила создаваемые в PyCharm окружения. Ставить дополнительно галочки — нет необходимости. И нажимаем на Create.

Теперь установим библиотеки, которые будем использовать в программе. С помощью главного меню переходим в настройки File → Settings. Где переходим в Project: project_name → Project Interpreter.

Здесь мы видим таблицу со списком установленных пакетов. В начале установлено только два пакета: pip и setuptools.

Справа от таблицы имеется панель управления с четырьмя кнопками:

  • Кнопка с плюсом добавляет пакет в окружение;
  • Кнопка с минусом удаляет пакет из окружения;
  • Кнопка с треугольником обновляет пакет;
  • Кнопка с глазом включает отображение ранних релизов для пакетов.

Для добавления (установки) библиотеки в окружение нажимаем на плюс. В поле поиска вводим название библиотеки. В данном примере будем устанавливать matplotlib. Дополнительно, через Specify version можно указать версию устанавливаемого пакета и через Options указать параметры. Сейчас для matplotlib нет необходимости в дополнительных параметрах. Для установки нажимаем Install Package.

После установки закрываем окно добавления пакетов в проект и видим, что в окружение проекта добавился пакет matplotlib с его зависимостями. В том, числе был установлен пакет с библиотекой numpy. Выходим из настроек.

Теперь мы можем создать файл с кодом в проекте, например, first.py. Код программы имеет следующий вид:

Для запуска программы, необходимо создать профиль с конфигурацией. Для этого в верхнем правом углу нажимаем на кнопку Add Configuration…. Откроется окно Run/Debug Configurations, где нажимаем на кнопку с плюсом (Add New Configuration) в правом верхнем углу и выбираем Python.

Далее указываем в поле Name имя конфигурации и в поле Script path расположение Python файла с кодом программы. Остальные параметры не трогаем. В завершение нажимаем на Apply, затем на OK.

Теперь можно выполнить программу и в директории с программой появится файл gauss.png:

Второй пример: использование предварительно созданного виртуального окружения

Данный пример можно использовать во время изучения работы с библиотекой. Например, изучаем PySide2 и нам придется создать множество проектов. Создание для каждого проекта отдельного окружения довольно накладно. Это нужно каждый раз скачивать пакеты, также свободное место на локальных дисках ограничено.

Более практично заранее подготовить окружение с установленными нужными библиотеками. И во время создания проектов использовать это окружение.

В этом примере мы создадим виртуальное окружения PySide2, куда установим данную библиотеку. Затем создадим программу, использующую библиотеку PySide2 из предварительно созданного виртуального окружения. Программа будет показывать метку, отображающую версию установленной библиотеки PySide2.

Начнем с экран приветствия PyCharm. Для этого нужно выйти из текущего проекта. На экране приветствия в нижнем правом углу через Configure → Settings переходим в настройки. Затем переходим в раздел Project Interpreter. В верхнем правом углу есть кнопка с шестерёнкой, нажимаем на неё и выбираем Add…, создавая новое окружение. И указываем расположение для нового окружения. Имя конечной директории будет также именем самого окружения, в данном примере — pyside2. В Windows можно поменять в пути папку venv на Envs, чтобы команда workon находила создаваемые в PyCharm окружения. Нажимаем на ОК.

Далее в созданном окружении устанавливаем пакет с библиотекой PySide2, также как мы устанавливали matplotlib. И выходим из настроек.

Теперь мы можем создавать новый проект использующий библиотеку PySide2. В окне приветствия выбираем Create New Project.

В мастере создания проекта, указываем имя расположения проекта в поле Location. Разворачиваем параметры окружения, щелкая по Project Interpreter, где выбираем Existing interpreter и указываем нужное нам окружение pyside2.

Для проверки работы библиотеки создаем файл second.py со следующий кодом:

Далее создаем конфигурацию запуска программы, также как создавали для первого примера. После чего можно выполнить программу.

Заключение

У меня нет богатого опыта программирования на Python. И я не знаком с другими IDE для Python. Поэтому, возможно, данные IDE также умеют работать с Pip и Virtualenv. Использовать Pip и Virtualenv можно в командой строке или в терминале. Установка библиотеки через Pip может завершиться ошибкой. Есть способы установки библиотек без Pip. Также создавать виртуальные окружения можно не только с помощью Virtualenv.

В общем, я лишь поделился небольшой частью опыта из данной области. Но, если не вдаваться в глубокие дебри, то этого вполне достаточно знать, чтобы писать простые программы на Python с использованием сторонних библиотек.

On the download page for CPython 3.5.1, you’ll see a wide range of options. Not all of these are well explained, especially for Windows users who have seven (seven!) choices.

Let me restructure the Windows items into a more feature-focused table:

As is fairly common with installers these days, you have the choice to download everything in advance (the “executable installer”), or a downloader that will let you minimize the download size (the “web installer”). The latter allows you to select options before downloading the components, which can reduce the download size to around 8MB. (For those of us with fast, reliable internet access, this sounds irrelevant – for those of us tethering through a 3G mobile phone connection in the middle of nowhere, it’s a really huge saving!)

But what is the third option – the “embeddable zip file”? It looks like a reasonable download size and it doesn’t have any installer, so it seems quite attractive. However, the embeddable zip file is not actually a regular Python installation. It has a specific purpose and a narrow audience: developers who embed Python in their own native applications.

Why embed Python?

For many users, “Python” is the interactive shell that lets you type code and see immediate results. For others, it is an executable that can run .py files. While these are both true, in reality Python is itself a library that is used to interpreter code. Let’s look at the complete source code for python.exe on Windows:

That’s it! The entire purpose of python.exe is to call a function from python35.dll. Which means it is really easy to create a different executable that will run exactly what you want:

This version will ignore any command line arguments that are passed in, replacing them with an option to always start a particular script. If you give this executable its own name and icon, nobody ever has to know that you used Python at all!

But Python has a much more complete API than this. The official docs are the canonical source of information, but let’s look at a couple of example programs that you may find useful.

Executing a simple Python string

The short program above lets you substitute a different command line, but if you have a string constant you can also execute that. This example is based on the one provided in the docs.

Executing Python directly

Running a string that is predefined or dynamically generated may be useful enough, but the real power of hosting Python comes when you directly interact with the objects. However, this is also when code becomes incredibly complicated.

In almost every situation where it is possible to use Cython or CFFI to generate code for wrapping native objects and values, you should probably use them. However, while they’re great for embedding native code in Python, they aren’t as helpful (at time of writing) for embedding Python into your native code. If you want to allow users to automate your application with a Python script, you’ll need some way of importing the user’s script, and to provide Python functions to call back into your native code.

As an example of hosting Python directly, the program below replicates the one from above but uses direct calls into the Python interpreter rather than a script. (Note that there is no error checking in this sample, and you need a lot of error checking here.)

In a larger application, you’d probably call Py_Initialize as part of your startup and Py_Finalize when exiting, and then have occasional calls into the Python engine wherever it made sense. This way, you can write parts of your application in Python and interact with them directly, or allow your users to extend it by providing their own Python scripts.

How does the embeddable zip file help?

Where does the embeddable zip file come into play? While you need a full Python install to compile these programs, when you install them onto a user’s computer, you only need the contents of the embeddable zip, as well as any (pre-built) packages you need. Header files, documentation, tests and shortcuts are not necessary,

Tools like pynsist will help produce installers for pure Python programs like this, using the embeddable zip file so that you don’t have to worry about whether your users already have Python or not.

Why wouldn’t you just run the regular Python installer as part of your application? Let’s play the “what if two programs did this?” game: program X runs the 3.5.0 installer and then program Y runs the 3.5.1 installer. What version does program X now have? If it ran the installer with a custom install directory, it probably has nothing left at all, but at best it now has 3.5.1.

The regular installer is designed for users, not applications. Programs that are not Python, but use Python, need to handle their own installation to make sure they end up with the correct version in the correct location with all the correct files. The embeddable zip file contains the minimum Python runtime for an application to install by itself.

What about other packages?

The embeddable zip file does not include pip. So how do you install packages? If you didn’t read the last sentence of the previous section, here it is again: the embeddable zip file contains the minimum Python runtime for an application to install by itself.

Using the embeddable zip file implies that you want the minimum required files to run your application, and you have your own installer. So if you need extra files at runtime – such as a Python package – you’ll need to install them with your installer. As mentioned above, for developing an application you should have a full Python installation, that does include pip and can install packages locally. But when distributing your application, you need to take responsibility.

While this seems like more work (and it is more work!), the value is worth it. Do you want your installer to fail because it can’t connect to the internet? Do you want your application to fail because a different version of a library was installed? When you provide a bundle for your users, include everything that it needs (tools like pynsist will help do this automatically).

Though I’m writing about the embeddable distribution on a Microsoft blog, this is actually a CPython feature. The doc page is part of the official Python documentation, and bugs or issues should be filed at the CPython bug tracker.

У Pyhon есть прекрасный инсталлятор, который все сдеает сам и установит Python со всеми стандартными модулями. Но, что делать, если ваше приложение использует python скрипты, а заставлять пользователя скачивать и устанавливать весь Python вам не хочется. Для этого существует Python Embedded (встраиваемый). Этот пакет не требует установки и может быть просто скопирован в папку с вашим приложением. Так же вы сможете установить все необходимые модули для работы и создать миниокружение для работы. Тем самым полностью избавить пользователя от лишних действий. Он даже и не узнает, что часть вашего приложения запускает Python. Этот прием я использовал в приложении Fpska (конвертация видео в 60 fps).
Далее я подробно распишу, как внедрить Python в свое приложение. Все эллементарно. Несколько простых шагов.

Шаг 1 — загружаем встраиваемый Python

Идем на python.org и скачиваем нужную версию python embedded:

Вся установка сводится к простой распаковке архива:


На этом шаге можно было бы и остановиться, но чистый Python редко, кто использует. Нужны еще и модули. А чтобы поставить модули нужен pip (package installer for Python).

Шаг 3 — pip

Перед устанвкой pip настроим пути к библиотекам. Для этого в файле python37._pth нужно раскомментировать строку:

Скачиваем pip. Для этого рекомендуют использовать утилиту curl:

но можно просто скачать из браузера

Далее переходим в папку с embedded Python и устанавливаем инсталлятор пакетов (pip):

После установки pip появятся папки Lib и Scripts:

Сразу же проверим работает ли pip:

Шаг 4 — модули

Устанавливаем модули. Для примера установим модуль wxPython (добавляет графический интерфейс).

Шаг 5 — тестирование

Тестируем только что собранный Python. При тестировании очент важно проверить, что получился абсолютно независимый дистрибутив Python со всеми проинсталлированными модулями. Для этого устанавливаем все необходимые модули. Делаем архив папки, где установлен Python Embedded с модулями. И загружаем его куда-нибудь на файлообменник. Затем находим чистый Windows 10, где Python никогда не был установлен. Скачиваем архив и распаковываем. Запускаем любой тестовый скриптик. На следующей картинке тестовый запуск wxPython приложения:

Настройка PATH

Программы и другие исполняемые файлы могут быть во многих каталогах. Следовательно, операционные системы предоставляют путь поиска, в котором перечислены каталоги, которые он ищет для исполняемых файлов.

Важными особенностями являются:

  • Путь хранится в переменной среды, которая является именованной строкой, поддерживаемой операционной системой. Эта переменная содержит информацию, доступную для командной оболочки и других программ.
  • Переменная пути называется PATH в Unix или Path в Windows (Unix чувствительна к регистру, Windows — нет).
  • В Mac OS установщик обрабатывает детали пути. Чтобы вызвать интерпретатор Python из любого конкретного каталога, вы должны добавить каталог Python на свой путь.

Setting up python’s Windows embeddable distribution (properly)

Embeddable distribution

If there is anything I like about Windows as a pythonist, it must be that you can use embedded distribution of python.

The embedded distribution is a ZIP file containing a minimal Python environment. It is intended for acting as part of another application, rather than being directly accessed by end-users.

In my opinion, it is a portable, ready-to-ship virtualenv. However, the embedded distribution comes with some limitation:

Third-party packages should be installed by the application installer alongside the embedded distribution. Using pip to manage dependencies as for a regular Python installation is not supported with this distribution, though with some care it may be possible to include and use pip for automatic updates. In general, third-party packages should be treated as part of the application (“vendoring”) so that the developer can ensure compatibility with newer versions before providing updates to users.

Sounds scary right? It said it doesn’t even support pip. Don’t worry, followthese simple steps, you will have a fully workable embedded environment.

Get the distribution

  1. Go to https://www.python.org/downloads/windows/
  2. Choose the version python you like and download the corresponding Windows x86-64 embeddable zip file .
  3. Unzip the file.

To make this tutorial easy to follow, I am assuming that you have downloaded Python3.7 and unzipped it to C:python .

Get pip

The distribution does not have pip installed in place, you need to install it yourself:1. Download get-pip.py at https://bootstrap.pypa.io/get-pip.py2. Save it to c:pythonget-pip.py 3. In command-line run C:pythonpython get-pip.py 4. pip is now installed

Config path

The runtime of this distribution doesn’t have an empty string » added in sys.path ,so that the current directory is not added into sys.path , to solve the problem,you need to:

  1. Open C:pythonpython37._pth .
  2. Uncomment the line #import site and save.
  3. Create a new .py file and save it as c:pythonsitecustomize.py :

You will encounter the following error when you try to install some packages:

  1. Unzip C:pythonpython37.zip to a new folder
  2. Delete C:pythonpython37.zip
  3. Rename the new folder to python37.zip (yes, a new folder called python37.zip )

Python’s import module is able to treat zip file as folder however, it cannot read pickle file inside a zip file, so unzip it and rename it.

Running pip

If you don’t want to mess with you PATH, you can simply do the following in your window command prompt:

  1. CD C:pythonScripts
  2. pip install xxxxx

Do you know where to change the configuration
(maybe a configuration file. or registry in Windows. )
so that we can extract python37.zip to a folder ( Lib is an idea 😉 )
(and delete the zip file)
So python will work as usual.

How to install Python using the “embeddable zip file”

I downloaded the Windows x86-64 embeddable zip file from https://www.python.org/downloads/release/python-365/.

(I cannot use the executable/web-based installer on my computer)

I want to install this on my PyCharm. How do I achieve this?

There are 2 main steps (each with its own set of substeps) that need to be followed:

Download and unpack the interpreter on your machine:

  1. Download the .zip file (e.g. [Python]: python-3.6.5-embed-amd64.zip) on your computer, in an empty dir (on my machine it’s: «e:WorkDevStackOverflowq050818078python36x64»)
  2. Unzip the file (some (.pyd, .dll, .exe, .zip, ._pth) files will appear). At the end, you can delete the .zip file that you downloaded in previous step

Configure PyCharm to use it:

Notes:

  • In order for the images below to be a small as possible (from size and display PoV), I have reduced the sizes of all windows from their default values
  • Some PyCharm stuff is specific to my machine / environment, (obviously) that will be different in your case
  • The script that I used for testing, is a dummy one that just prints some paths (that’s why I didn’t add it as code, it’s just in the 1 st image)
  • I only illustrate the minimal required steps to get you going, so even if for some steps there are options to customize them, I’m not going to mention them
  • I am using PyCharm Community Edition 2017.3.3 (in other versions things could be slightly different)

Steps:

In PyCharm main window (considering your project is open), go to menu «File -> Settings. «:

You could also go to «File -> Default Settings. «, check [JetBrains]: Project and IDE Settings for differences between them.

In the «Settings» window, click «Project Interpreter -> Show All» (you might need to scroll down — if you have multiple interpreters configured)

In the «Project Interpreters» window, click the «Add» button (green + on upper right side). Also, you might have to click an «Add Local. » control that appears when you click «Add«

In the «Add Local Python Interpreter«, make sure to:

  • Check «Exiting environment» radio button
  • Click the «. » («Browse«) button

In the «Select Python Interpreter» window, go to the folder where you unzipped the file at #1.1., select python.exe and then click «OK«

Click the «OK» button in all the windows opened at previous steps (in reversed order), until you’re back to main window

In order to test, on the code editor window, right click and from the popup menu choose «Run ‘code’«. Here’s console output window content:

As a final note, naming the test file code.py was «a bit» uninspired, as there is such a module in Python‘s standard library (in the meantime, I renamed it to code00.py), but I don’t feel like doing all the screenshots (that contain it) again.
