Is it possible to run and/or deploy Microsoft Edge through Windows Server 2012 R2?
I haven’t been able to find some information regarding that subject and we are going to migrate to 2012 R2 soon.
Thanks in regard!

For Microsoft Edge, it’s simply impossible. Microsoft Edge is built entirely on the Universal App platform,
which was introduced in Windows 10. The APIs that Edge uses are only available in Windows 10.Regards,

Update: This article was updated on January 17, 2023, to reflect revised support statements for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.
With Windows 7 Extended Security Update (ESU) and Windows 8/8.1 end of support on January 10th, 2023, and Google Chrome ending support for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1, Microsoft Edge browser version 109 and WebView2 Runtime version 109 will be the last respective versions to support these operating systems. Additionally, WebView2 SDK versions 1.0.1519.0 and higher will no longer support Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1.
Both Microsoft Edge version 109 and WebView2 Runtime version 109 are scheduled for release the week of January 12th, 2023 (to learn more, see our release schedule). While Microsoft Edge and WebView2 Runtime versions 109 and earlier will continue to work on these operating systems, those versions will not receive new features, future security updates, or bug fixes.
Microsoft Edge version 109 will also be the last supported version for Windows Server 2008 R2.
Support on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2
Microsoft Edge version 109 will be the last supported version on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 (version 110 and later will be unavailable). Version 109 will receive critical security fixes and fixes for known exploit bugs until October 10, 2023. WebView2 Runtime version 109 will be supported in the same way.
Additionally, Internet Explorer 11 remains supported on those operating systems for as long as they are in support.
Fixed vs Evergreen versions of WebView2 Runtimes
This end of support timeline applies to both the Evergreen and Fixed versions of the WebView2 Runtime.
Previously installed Evergreen WebView2 Runtimes will update as normal to version 109 but will not continue updating after that. After end of support, future attempts to install the Evergreen WebView2 Runtime on Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 will install version 109.
Fixed versions of the WebView2 Runtime higher than 109 will fail to start on Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 and should not be used on those operating systems.
Getting new versions of Microsoft Edge and the WebView2 Runtime
To get new versions of Microsoft Edge or the WebView2 Runtime with up-to-date functionality and security, please upgrade to Windows 10 or later.
We also encourage developers to end support for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1. We acknowledge that this may not be easy for some developers to do, however ending support for these operating systems will help keep end users safe from potential security threats and risks as both operating systems go out of support on January 10th, 2023.

If you have read about End of Support List of Microsoft Services and Products in 2023you probably know that Windows Server 2012 and R2 will reach end of support on October 10, 2023 later.
But for those OS users who happen to be using Microsoft Edge Chromium, there is good news, because Microsoft recently report that they will extend Microsoft Edge Chromium support for both OS until at least October 2023 this year.
Generally, Microsoft Edge Chromium support ends on January 10, 2023 at the same time it ends end of support Windows 7 (ESU) and Windows 8 or 8.1, but because end of support from Windows Server 2012 and R2 is still fairly long, so Microsoft decided to extend its support specifically for Windows Server 2012 and R2.
“Microsoft Edge version 109 will be the last supported version on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 (version 110 and later will be unavailable). Version 109 will receive critical security fixes and fixes for known exploit bugs until October 10, 2023. WebView2 Runtime version 109 will be supported in the same way.” Microsoft said.
So, for you Windows Server 2012 and R2 users, you can still get Microsoft Edge Chromium at least until October 2023, but with a note that the final version is Microsoft Edge 109 but with several additional updates that include security updates inside it.

Earlier this month, Microsoft ended support for Windows 7 and 8.1. In addition to killing the most loved/hated OS combo, Microsoft stopped supporting Edge on outdated platforms. However, a few days ago, the company revealed slightly revised plans. Users of Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 will continue to receive updates for the Microsoft Edge browser until October 10, 2023.
Here’s what Microsoft says Latest announcement post:
Microsoft Edge version 109 will be the last supported version on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 (version 110 and later will not be available). Version 109 will receive important security fixes and fixes for known exploit bugs until October 10, 2023. WebView2 runtime version 109 will be supported as well.
Additionally, Internet Explorer 11 remains supported on these operating systems for as long as they are supported.
It’s worth noting that extended support does not mean updates to new features or the latest versions. Microsoft will release only the most important security updates, and the browser will remain at version 109 until its end. Also, attempting to install Microsoft Edge 110 and newer on Windows 7 or 8.1 will result in the installer reporting an unsupported operating system.
If you have a Windows 7 or 8 system that cannot be updated to Windows 10 or 11, switching to Firefox may be your only option. Mozilla still supports its browser on now-dead Windows versions, but it won’t last long.
