More Information

The new UAA describes a class driver architecture for computer audio solutions that are supported in Microsoft Windows operating systems.

An audio device that is UAA compliant can rely completely on the operating system for driver support. Therefore, the hardware vendor does not have to supply a custom driver for the device. Microsoft plans to supply UAA class drivers for the following classes of audio device in Windows Server 2008.

  • USB Audio

  • IEEE 1394 AV/C

  • High Definition Audio

A High Definition Audio device complies with the Intel High Definition Audio specification. A High Definition Audio device connects to the PCI bus or to the PCI Express bus. This High Definition Audio device can reside on an internal audio card, or it can be part of an integrated motherboard chip set. The update that is described in this article supports the spring 2004 Intel initial hardware release of High Definition Audio-compliant solutions.

The third-party products that this article discusses are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding the performance or reliability of these products.

The advantages of UAA over the current audio industry solution, AC’97 Audio Codec, include the following.

For users

  • Simpler installation of audio peripherals

  • Increased system stability

  • Easier installation of audio drivers

  • Increased performance

  • Glitch-free audio

  • Increased security for protected content

  • Reduced requirement for vendor-supplied drivers

  • Reduced requirement to upgrade drivers

  • Guaranteed basic audio support for UAA-compliant devices

For OEMs and hardware manufacturers

  • Reduced software development, testing, and support

  • Reduced exposure to product support calls and to product returns

  • Easier phase-out for products at «end of life»

Virtual Server is suitable for running the web-based applications that need to be kept running always. In specific situations, we need to enable an Audio card that is not enabled by default. The following instructions will help you to enable an Audio card on a Windows VPS Server.

In this tutorial, we will cover the steps on how to enable Audio in:

  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2012, 2016 and 2019

You can Enable Audio on a Windows Server 2003 in easy five steps.

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools and then click Terminal Services Configuration.
  2. Double-click on “RDP-TCP.”
  3. Select the “Client Settings” tab
  4. Clear the “Audio Mapping” check box and hit ok
  5. Reboot the server

Enable Audio on a Windows Server 2008

One of the benefits of using Windows Server 2008 is that you can use it as an upload and download server. In this case, you need to use neither an Audio card nor a Graphic card. But, in certain situations, we need to enable an Audio card. Here’s how to enable audio on your Windows server 2008:

  1. First login to your Windows Server 2008
  2. Move the mouse pointer to the lower left-hand corner of the screen until the Windows Start button appears, then right-click on it and choose Run.
  3. Type services.msc and hit Enter.
  4. Scroll down through the list of services until you see Windows Audio.
  5. Right-click on Windows Audio and then click on start
  6. Right-click Windows Audio and select Properties
  7. In the General tab, Startup type section, select Automatic
  8. Click Control Panel in the Start menu
  9. If using the Modern View, click Sound in the Hardware and Sound category.
  10. If you are using the Classic View, double-click the Sound icon.
  11. Select your default playback device and click Properties.
  12. Now go to the advanced tab and uncheck Give exclusive mode application priority.
  13. Save the settings by clicking OK twice!

Enable Audio on a Windows Server 2012 and upwards

The following steps can be used to:

  • enable audio Windows Server 2012
  • enable audio Windows Server 2012 R2
  • enable audio Windows Server 2016
  • enable audio Windows Server 2019

Let’s get started!

  1. First login to your Windows Server (2012, 2012 R2, 2016 or 2019)
  8. Click Ok to finish the setup.

Now you have audio enabled!

hey everyone!

are any of you running windows server 2003, and if so, do you have any problems with your audio?

i’m having a weird problem with my audio… it sounds like a dsp or something is turned on at all times and makes the left channel about 1/3 as loud as the right and it echos really bad

server 2003 is the only m$ OS that i have that problem in… 2k/xp work just fine

i’ve tried several different versions of audio drivers and they all do the same thing in server 2003

is anyone else having this same problem or something similar ??

if u are and have found out what to do to fix it, please respond

thanks all!

This is what I did to get the audio to work properly:

Click Start > Run > type services.msc & Enter > Look for the Windows Audio service > Double Click it > Set the Startup dropdown to Automatic > Press Apply > Now you can press Start > Click OK

Audio is now enabled in Windows Server 2003, That just leaves us to enable Hardware Acceleration for Audio in Windows (used for EAX and A3D)

Click Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > In the Speaker Settings section click Advanced > Performance tab > Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to Full > Click OK > OK

if it still does not work after this, you may need to install your audio drivers again!

Hope that helps

yea, i did all that as soon as i got 2k3 up and running

still having the echo/quiet left channel problem

i’ve done 3 or 4 fresh installs of 2k3 + did all full accelerating of video and sound as soon as i get booted into windows after install, and also used a different driver version each time with no luck of that problem going away

nope, unfortunately there’s something else going on that’s causing this problem and i have no idea what it is

i can’t find anything about anyone having this same problem anywhere

What audio card are you running? I had no difficulties with my AC97 onboard, whatsoever. The Windows Audio service doesn’t need to be enabled for sound to work, at least I didn’t need to. It’s more for sound schemes and stuff.

i have an EPoX board with Realtek AC97 audio integrated

i checked the sound manager program that installs with the driver to see if any environments were turned on, and it was set to None

still having the echo problem

well, it seems that the problem i’m having with the echo is only in winamp… anyone else have an echo or any other problem with winamp in server 2003 ?

I’m running Server 2K3 Enterprise, and audio is just fine.  Following installation of the OS, I did need to enable the sound, as all sound by default is disabled.  After enabling the sound, I then increased the performance to full acceleration and best conversation.  The onboard AC’97 worked fine, as does the SB Live! I’m using now.  For the price of a soundcard, I’d just buy another one and see what happens.

running 2k3 enterprise with audiophile 2496, no problems. Are you running the latest direct x? There is a lot of directx stuff that is disabled by default that you have to turn on in dxsetup or whatever that configuration utility is called even after its installed.

Windows Server 2003 Audio Problem

well well well… i just installed directx9a and the echo is now totally gone… the problem was still there with dx9, but dx9a seems to have solved the problem

i was trying to stay away from dx9 cause of all the bugs the first release had, but dx9a seems to be a little better

all is good in server 2003 land now, the echo is even gone from winamp 2.91

i remember seeing a couple posts where people were having problems with winamp 2.91 in server 2003, but it runs like a charm on here, it just had that bad echo with dx8.1

thanks for the replies everyone, much appreciated
