The Window Live Essentials 2011 suite by Microsoft includes free products for mail, photos, instant messaging, movies, writing and more. It was in beta for the last few months but now it has been released officially, and Microsoft started pushing it through Windows update recently.
This article will give an overview of what’s there to explore in this latest edition of Live Essentials and how to install the programs. In the coming weeks, we’ll publish various guides and tutorials related to these programs in order to make the most out of this suite of free tools.
Note: Windows Live Essentials 2011 requires that you have Vista service pack 2 or a higher version of Windows. There are also some other system requirements which we have mentioned at the end of this article.
How to Install Windows Live Essentials 2011
So, lets start with the installation. There are two ways to install this tool.
1. Using Windows Update
By now, Live essentials should have appeared as one of the automatic updates that Windows installs regularly on your computer. If you have your Windows updates set to automatic download and install then you might already have this program installed on your PC. You can check it by going to the start search bar and typing Windows Live Essentials, Windows Mail etc. If you find them there, it means you have it.
2. Using the Live Essentials Website
You can of course download it from the Live Essentials site. And the good thing about doing it this way is that you can choose the products you want to install. In case of installation through Windows updates, I found that it doesn’t let you choose and just installs all of them at one go.
Once you download and the run the tool, you’ll get the following window.
It will then let you select the programs you want to install. You could uncheck the ones you don’t need. If you already have a previous version of any of those programs installed, the installer would update them.
Clicking on install would start the process. It takes a few minutes to get everything up and running.
That was about the installation. After you are through with it, you should find the products you selected in the “All Programs” list in your start menu.
What does Live Essentials 2011 include?
Now lets talk about the various products in the Live Essentials 2011 suite. It’s a great collection of programs really. Each serves a different purpose and is useful in its own right. Lets check them out.
Windows Live Messenger
Windows Live Messenger is the instant messaging tool that lets you connect with people and chat with them online. It’s an advanced IM tool that combines social networking and HD (high definition) video chat. You could also share photos and videos while chatting,
send video messages
and do much more.
Windows Live Photo Gallery
The Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011 is a powerful photo organization tool that can help you effortlessly import photos from all kinds of devices and then organize them efficiently. Edit photos, add various effects, create
slideshows

panoramic photos
and movies out of them and quickly publish them on sites like Facebook and Flickr.
Windows Live Movie Maker
Windows Live Movie Maker, as the name suggests, helps you make movies. You can add your photos and videos and create a nice movie complete with sounds, special effects, captions etc. Editing the movies is not that difficult either, and sharing
your movies
across social sites like Facebook and YouTube is an option too.
Windows Live Mesh 2011 is a useful
backup and sync
tool for Windows PCs that can keep your important files and folders in sync with your online SkyDrive account. You get free 5 GB storage on SkyDrive, which isn’t much but enough to backup a large number of word documents, text files and images.
Windows Live Writer
Let me start by saying that I am not a big fan of the latest version of Live Writer included in Live Essentials 2011. Being a long time user of this tool (I am writing this article in Live Writer), I expected something better. Having said that, I want to mention that no other tool comes close to the capabilities and features of Windows Live Writer as an offline blog editor. So, if you are a blogger and use Windows, this is a must-have tool.
Windows Live Family Safety
Those who read this site regularly might remember that we explored Windows Live Family Safety in detail in our

. The new Family Safety is almost the same, with probably a better interface.
Windows Live Mail
Windows Live Mail is a great tool for those who want to use a desktop email client but don’t have Outlook, and don’t like Thunderbird. You can use this tool to manage
multiple email accounts
, organize conversations and do a lot more.
Outlook Connector Pack
The Outlook Connector Pack in Windows Live Essentials Suite has the Hotmail connector for Outlook and social connector for Live messenger. It makes things easier if you use a Hotmail/Windows Live email account as your primary email address.
Bing Bar
Bing Bar is the toolbar for your browser that incorporates some key features of Bing, Microsoft’s flagship search engine (and the second most popular too). It’s a must-have for those who prefer Bing to Google for their searching needs.
Microsoft Silverlight
And finally, the Windows Live Essentials 2011 installer will also install Microsoft Silverlight, the platform required for a lot of web based tools (most of them being Microsoft’s) to run. It’s like Adobe Flash, which, as most of you know, is used to run web videos (most of them).

Windows Essentials (formerly Windows Live Essentials and Windows Live Installer) is a discontinued suite of Microsoft freeware applications that includes email, instant messaging, photo sharing, blogging, and parental control software. Essentials programs are designed to integrate well with each other, with Microsoft Windows, and other Microsoft web-based services such as OneDrive and Outlook.com.[3][4]

Windows Essentials applications support installation on Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.[6] Previous versions were also available on Windows XP and Windows Vista, and included Windows Live Messenger.[6]

Windows Live Dashboard[edit]
On August 25, 2006, Microsoft began seeking testers for their invitation-only Windows Live service named Windows Live Essentials. It was very similar to Google Pack in that it allows users to discover, install, and maintain a number of Windows Live application programs. However, the original Windows Live Essentials was referred to as the website serving the purpose of allowing users to discover new Windows Live services. The Windows Live Essentials website was integrated tightly with Windows Live Dashboard, an application which offers a view of the services the user already has and what new Windows Live software and services are available. Windows Live Dashboard required users to sign-in with their Windows Live ID to check whether the service has been downloaded or not. At that time, web-based services such as Windows Live Hotmail (then Windows Live Mail) was also part of the list.
Shortly after its initial beta release, the original Windows Live Essentials website became unavailable and the website was redirected to Windows Live Betas (then Windows Live Ideas), and as a result Windows Live Dashboard also became unavailable.
Windows Live Installer (Wave 2)[edit]
Subsequent reappearance of a Windows Live Dashboard is seen with the initial «Windows Live Wave 2» unified installers from Windows Live Messenger 8.5, Mail and Writer that was released on May 30, 2007. In the «Windows Live Wave 2» suite of services, Windows Live Installer was the name of the website and software given to serve the purposes of allowing users to discover, download and install Windows Live software and services. Users were able to select the Windows Live software they wished to install on the website, and the website would pass on the information to the unified installer software such that the installer will only download and install those applications selected.[7]
Windows Live Essentials 2009 (Wave 3)[edit]
The Windows Live Installer application was significantly updated with the subsequent «Windows Live Wave 3» release of applications, with the new inclusion of Windows Live Movie Maker (beta) and Microsoft Office Outlook Connector to its suite of products. On October 29, 2008, it was announced at the Professional Developers Conference 2008 that Windows Live Installer would be renamed as Windows Live Essentials, and would be integrated into Windows 7 to allow users to download the included Windows Live applications. However, the Windows Live Essentials applications will not be «bundled» with the Windows 7 operating system. This should allow more frequent updates to the Windows Live Essentials applications outside of major operating system releases.[4]
On December 15, 2008, the «beta refresh» versions of Windows Live Essentials applications were released.[8] This release included many changes since the previous beta release based on user feedback. A significant visual change in this release was the introduction of new application icons which added a common design theme to all the Live Essentials applications. The words «beta» were removed from most of the build numbers. On January 7, 2009, the «beta refresh» versions were released as the final versions, with the notable exception of Windows Live Movie Maker.[8]
Microsoft updated Windows Live Essentials Wave 3 on February 13, 2009[9] and again on August 19, 2009,[10] when Windows Live Movie Maker was released out of beta and significantly updated with additional features since the beta version released in December 2008.[11] The final build number was 14.0.8117.0416.
After the release of Windows Live Essentials 2011, which dropped support for Windows XP, Windows Live Essentials 2009 was renamed to Windows Live Essentials for Windows XP and was made available for Windows XP users to help maintain the product user base.
Windows Live Essentials 2011 (Wave 4)[edit]
Microsoft released a public beta for the next major update for Windows Live Essentials dubbed «Wave 4» on June 24, 2010.[12] The updated applications include Windows Live Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Writer, Family Safety, Mesh, and Messenger Companion. For Windows Live Mesh, the application has been rewritten to be based on the previous Live Mesh and will allow PC and Mac users to keep their documents, pictures and music in sync across multiple computers. It was also announced that Windows Live Toolbar will be discontinued and replaced by the Bing Bar.[13] In addition, the ribbon user interface was incorporated into Mail, Movie Maker, Photo Gallery, and Writer. The Wave 4 beta has dropped support for Windows XP; Windows Vista or Windows 7 is required for its use.[12] The beta refresh of Windows Live Essentials 2011 was released on August 17, 2010. Microsoft released the final version of Windows Live Essentials 2011 on September 30, 2010. The applications were updated with a hotfix/QFE (except for Mesh and Family Safety) on December 1, 2010,[14] and that update became available through Windows Update from March 20, 2011.[15] On May 2, 2012, Microsoft announced the re-branding of Windows Live. Although all applications in Windows Live Essentials 2011 suite will continue to function on Windows Vista, 7, and 8, there will be no significant updates made to these applications in the future.[16] In June 2014, Microsoft announced that Windows Live Essentials 2011 would no longer be available for download on Windows Vista.
Windows Essentials 2012 (Wave 5)[edit]
Microsoft released Windows Essentials 2012 on August 7, 2012, for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users.[17] Windows Essentials 2012 included SkyDrive for Windows (later renamed OneDrive), and dropped Windows Live Mesh, Messenger Companion and Bing Bar. Microsoft Family Safety is also installed for Windows 7 users only, as Windows 8 has built-in family safety functionalities.[16] Further, Windows Essentials 2012 also dropped the «Windows Live» branding from the installer itself, as well as from programs such as Photo Gallery and Movie Maker, which have been branded Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Movie Maker respectively. These two programs have also received several updates and enhancements since their 2011 release, including video stabilization, waveform visualizations, new narration tracks, audio emphasizing, default save as H.264 format, and enhanced text effects for Movie Maker; as well as AutoCollage integration and addition of Vimeo as a publishing partner for Photo Gallery. No significant changes or re-branding were made in this release for other programs such as Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Mail, and Windows Live Writer.[18] It is still possible today to download the original pack for Windows Essentials 2012.[19] Such links are provided in the form of links to the Wayback Machine.
Deprecation[edit]
Some of the apps included in the package are unsupported on Windows 8.1 and 10 and are removed after an upgrade. The Facebook integration in Photo Gallery and Movie Maker broke due to Facebook API changes.[20] Microsoft turned off Windows Live Messenger’s service and redirected users to Skype, another one of its messaging services; the installer has not been updated to reflect this change.[21][22] Windows Live Mail no longer works with Outlook.com using the proprietary DeltaSync protocol due to removal of support for the latter from Outlook.com,[23] but can be configured to use such accounts using either IMAP or POP3 protocols.[24] Windows Live Writer no longer works with Blogger due to Blogger’s authentication API changes.[25] The suite had otherwise not received a major upgrade since 2012, and it had not received any updates through Windows Update since 2014, although Microsoft offered a downloadable buggy update in December 2015.[26] Microsoft announced that the suite would be officially retired on January 10, 2017, and would no longer be available for download, and that after the end of support date applications already installed would continue to work but with «an increased security risk associated with use of unsupported products past their end of support date.»[6]

Windows Live Messenger дает возможность использовать видеочат в качестве HD в полноэкранном режиме, запускать слайд-шоу из фотографий, обмениваться различным контентом в момент общения. Естественно, для того, чтобы получить высококачественное изображение, необходимо, чтобы у обоих собеседников имелась веб-камера соответствующего уровня, микрофон, динамики или мини-гарнитура, плюс высокоскоростной интернет. В окне программы Windows Live Messenger можно обмениваться фотографиями с компьютера, с альбома в сети или изображениями из службы Bing. Интересно, что во время разговора Messenger автоматически подчеркивает популярные поисковые запросы, кликнув по которым можно увидеть картинку, сайт или видео от Bing. Таким образом время чата Messenger способен организовать обоим собеседникам одновременный просмотр видео, которое поисковик нашел в сети. Одновременно с этим Messenger позволяет мгновенно обмениваться файлами во время разговора путем обычного перетаскивания с компьютера в окно программы.
Если вы любите оживлять беседу смайликами и живыми картинками, то Windows Live Messenger вас не разочарует. Теперь в программу встроены трехмерные смайлики и анимационные приветствия, которые можно отправлять друзьям и вставлять в строчки текста. Вверху окна программы имеется область, куда можно вместо привычной фотографии или картинки вставить видеоклип, снятый вашей же веб-камерой или живую картинку, которая меняется в зависимости от настроения.
В программе Windows Live Messenger можно развлекаться не только в чате, просмотром видео или фотографий, но и играть с друзьями в различные игры. Пусть их список не слишком велик, зато играть вы будете, не выходя из окна программы.
Еще одно преимущество Windows Live Messenger заключается в том, что в одном окне программы отображаются все социальные оповещения. Messenger настраивается таким образом, что вы можете автоматически получать оповещения и просматривать обновления статусов друзей в любых социальных сетях — Facebook, MySpace, Blogger или LinkedIn. При этом вы легко сможете просматривать фотографии друзей, размещенные в профилях социалок, комментировать их новости прямо из Messenger. При работе с Windows Live Messenger, вы сами устанавливаете параметры конфиденциальности – кому и что разрешаете просматривать. Messenger дает возможность выбрать уровень конфиденциальности: 1) публичный, когда содержимое доступно для совместного просмотра, 2) ограниченный – когда контакт должен получить разрешение на просмотр, 3) или приватный.
• Photo Gallery (Фотоальбом) – приложение для импорта фото из камеры, составления альбомов, их редактирования. С помощью Photo Gallery можно создавать панорамные изображения, фильмы, слайд-шоу, размещать свои коллекции на Facebook и Flickr прямо из фотоальбома.
Обмениваться фотографиями и видео в сети, выкладывать их в социальных сетях можно прямо из окна программы. В новой версии пакета появилась интересная возможность – бесплатно зарегистрировавшись в интернет-хранилище Windows Live SkyDrive, вы получаете прекрасный способ обмениваться фотографиями и видео, предоставлять совместный доступ к файлам, размещенным на SkyDrive, друзьям или всем желающим. Кстати, сервис поддерживает пакет Office, а значит, вы можете хранить там документы в форматах Word, Excel, PowerPoint и OneNote. Интеграция Photo Gallery и SkyDrive упрощает работу с коллекциями фотографий. Теперь, отредактировав их или превратив в красивое слайд-шоу, вы сможете сразу же разместить контент в онлайн-хранилище, чтобы затем предоставить доступ к нему всем своим друзьям.
У приложения Photo Gallery появилась новая функция – поиск фотографий или видео по всем коллекциям при помощи присваиваемых тегов (имена, даты, место снимка и др.). Еще одним нововведением стала функция распознавания лиц, позволяющая не только легко искать, но и упорядочивать фотогалерею. На этот раз улучшены и средства редактирования, которые можно применять одновременно к десяткам отдельных фотографий. Выполнение коллажей, новые средства ретуширования, выравнивание по горизонтали, создание панорамных снимков, объединяющих целые серии фотографий, — все это теперь имеется в решении Photo Gallery.
• Movie Maker (Киностудия) – эффективный инструмент для создания фильмов из фотографий или видео.
Movie Maker – это приложение, которое простыми средствами позволяет создавать красивые вещи. Функционал приложения довольно обширен: добавление спецэффектов, переходов, звукового сопровождения, заголовков. Созданное видео вы сможете выложить в интернете в социальных сетях, записать на ПК, мобильное устройство или на DVD-диск. Правда, последняя функция доступна не во всех выпусках Windows. Приложения Movie Maker и Photo Gallery используются совместно, поэтому фото и видео легко использовать для создания собственного видео.
Интересно, что для работы с Movie Maker можно использовать фотографии и видео, которые размещены в разных местах – на вашем компьютере, в сетевом хранилище, загружать прямо с веб-камеры или мобильного телефона. Интерфейс приложения сходен с инструментами офисного пакета, поэтому работа с ним не представляет особой сложности. При создании собственного фильма, вы можете использовать функции предварительного просмотра и раскадровки, которые помогут сделать видео более качественным.
В Movie Maker появилась функция автофильма, которая все сделает за вас. Ваша задача – добавить в приложение фотографии, видео и музыку, и приложение автоматически соединит их в единый видеофайл. Конечно, не следует ждать высокохудожественного результата, все только в пределах предустановленной фантазии программы, но если дело не в качестве, а в скорости, то самое то. Естественно, созданный видеофайл можно редактировать: микшировать музыку, использовать фрагменты аудиофайлов, обрезать ненужное, ускорять или замедлять фильм, делить его на части, применять художественные эффекты, оформлять титрами и заголовками.
Фильмами, созданными при помощи Movie Maker, можно обмениваться на YouTube, Facebook и Windows Live SkyDrive, отправлять их по электронной почте или просматривать во время общения через Windows Live Messenger. Кроме того, вы можете записать фильм на DVD и, к примеру, сделать своему другу или возлюбленной необычный подарок. Выбрав пункт меню «Для дисплея с высоким разрешением», вы можете сохранить свое произведение в формате HD. Точно также можно сохранять видео для воспроизведения на мобильном телефоне или любом мультимедийном устройстве.
• Windows Live Mail (Электронная почта) – программа для работы почтой, календарем, контактами, учетными записями в Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail. Особенность Windows Live Mail в том, что просматривать свою почту можно даже тогда, когда подключение к сети неактивно.
Приложение Windows Live Mail позволяет добавлять в одной программе все свои учетные записи. Почтовый клиент автоматически группирует сообщения по темам, которые отображаются в папке «Входящие», это облегчает поиск и упорядочивает вашу почту. Тесная интеграция почтового клиента с сервисом Windows Live SkyDrive позволяет отправлять большие файлы, содержащие фотографии высокого разрешения и видео без перегрузки папки «Входящие» вашего получателя. Из той же папки «Входящие» можно добавлять напоминания о важных событиях в Календарь Mail. Вводите название, дважды кликаете событие и добавляете дополнительные сведения, которые вам следует помнить. Все делается предельно просто и быстро.
• Windows Live Writer (Редактор блогов) — инструмент для создания и редактирования своих записей в блогах, позволяющий работать с WordPress, Blogger, TypePad, LiveJournal и др..
При помощи Windows Live Writer можно создавать и настраивать несколько блогов, встраивать фото или видео на его страницы, добавлять понравившееся видео из сети, редактировать тексты, осуществлять предварительный просмотр записи, вставлять смайлики, карты Bing разных типов и другой контент. Если вы никогда не вели свой блог, то глядя на простоту инструментов Windows Live Writer, вам это захочется попробовать себя.
• Windows Live Family Safety (Служба семейной безопасности) – программа, позволяющая контролировать действия ваших детей в интернете.
Инструмент Family Safety необходим тем, кто заботится о психической безопасности своих детей. Он позволяет ограничивать доступ детей к определенному контенту, веб-сайтам, просматривать историю посещений и закачек. В Family Safety появился новый инструмент – фильтр SafeSearch, который по умолчанию включен для Bing, Google, Yahoo! и других поисковых систем. Родители контролируют время работы с компьютером, доступ к играм и программам, причем, осуществлять это можно дистанционно, не прерывая работу ребенка на его ПК. В случае если вы устанавливаете Family Safety на всех домашних машинах, то настройки в них автоматически синхронизируются.
• Windows Live Mesh (Синхронизация и удаленный доступ) – инструмент, использующийся для синхронизации файлов и папок между компьютерами, на сервисе SkyDrive, для синхронизации программ и удаленного подключения к компьютеру.
Приложение Windows Live Mesh обеспечивает синхронизацию папок любого размера между несколькими компьютерами, подключенными к сети. При этом изменения сохраняются на всех машинах, позволяя вам работать с папками даже без доступа к интернету. Очень удобно, если Mesh используется вместе с сетевым хранилищем SkyDrive, таким образом вы легко сохраняете изменения сразу во всех папках на разных компьютерах или удаленно на своем компьютере.
Выгоды от использования программы Mesh очевидны, если вы привыкли работать с Windows 7 или Vista на всех компьютерах. В этом случае с помощью Mesh можно синхронизировать не только папки, но и настройки программ Internet Explorer и Microsoft Office. Изменения, которые вы вносите в браузере (добавляете закладки, меняете параметры) и в офисном пакете (устанавливаете стили, шаблоны, автоподписи и прочее) сохраняются на всех синхронизируемых компьютерах.
Пакет приложений Windows Live Essentials 2011 для Windows 7 и Windows Vista в настоящее время выпущен на 48 языках. Так как этот набор инструментов был выпущен специально для последней версии операционной системы, то вы можете использовать обычные функции Windows 7, например, закреплять значки новых приложений на панели задач и использовать быстрые переходы для начала работы. Идея новой версии пакета – тесная интеграция всех приложений и сервисов Windows Live с социальными сетями и популярными сайтами.
