Both versions bring a host of new features to make your computing experience even better.
In this article, I’ll be comparing the two versions and discussing their key differences so you can decide which one is right for you.
From encryption to boot screen animation, there’s something for everyone in these releases.
So let’s get started!
Overview of Windows 11 21H2
You’ve heard of Windows 11, but did you know that version 21H2 brings a variety of new features and updates?
Windows 11, version 21H2 was released on October 20th 2021. This update contains several notable changes such as an improved Start menu design with added support for Linux apps and the reintroduction of Cortana.
It also introduces Wake On Voice for Modern Standby devices that allows users to wake their device by simply saying “Hey Cortana” or using voice commands. The update also adds improvements to the taskbar which now supports drag and drop, as well as adding various tweaks to the Action Center interface.
Overview of Windows 11 22H2
The next major update of Windows 11 with version 22H2 is packed with brand new features and improvements to make your experience even smoother!
This update includes a redesigned Efficiency mode feature in the Task Manager, a re-added drag and drop feature on the taskbar, split Focus assist into Do Not Disturb and Focus modes, Clipchamp as an inbox app, tabbed browsing in File Explorer, inline suggested actions feature, a tablet-optimized taskbar option and more.

Microsoft Pluton is another highlight of this release. It provides hardware-based root of trust along with secure identity and cryptographic services which can be enabled on devices with compatible processors running Windows 11 22H2.
Windows 11 21H2 vs 22H2: Encryption
You’ll be able to securely encrypt your personal data with the latest Windows 11 version 22H2, ensuring that your information is kept safe from malicious actors. This feature, called Personal Data Encryption (PDE), differs from BitLocker in that it encrypts individual files instead of whole volumes and disks. PDE utilizes Windows Hello for Business to link data encryption keys with user credentials and minimize the number of credentials the user has to remember.
Stickers
Unleash your creativity and make your desktop come alive with Windows 11’s new Stickers feature – perfect for students looking to give their device a personal touch!
With over 500 cheerful, education-friendly digital stickers available, you can express yourself however you want. Here are some of the ways that Stickers can help you customize your device:
- Organize Your Desktop – Arrange and resize the stickers on top of the desktop background for a personalized look.

Notifications
The Notification Center, which can be accessed from the taskbar or the Action Center, provides a central location for all your notifications. It’s easy to customize what appears in the Notification Center and when things appear – like when your device is charging or if an update is available. You can choose between toast, banner, alert, and other notification styles that are tailored to fit whatever task or activity you’re doing at the moment.
The Windows 11 version 22H2 update has also added new features to Notifications. You can now prioritize critical notifications while muting others. The Do Not Disturb feature will help keep notifications from interrupting important tasks by temporarily silencing them until you’re ready. Additionally, there are now more options for managing how often notifications repeat themselves so you don’t get overwhelmed with too many alerts over time.
Notifications in Windows 11 version 22H2 give users greater control over what they see and when they see it – helping them stay organized and on top of their tasks without having to worry about being bombarded with irrelevant information.
Windows 11 21H2 vs 22H2: Redesigned Start Menu
Continuing on from the previous topic of notifications, I’d like to talk about the redesigned Start Menu in Windows 11, version 22H2.
The Start Menu has been completely overhauled with this update and it looks and works better than ever before. It is now more intuitive and easier to navigate as well as being able to display your favorite apps and files right at the top for quick access.
It also has a new dark mode which can be enabled by simply clicking on the toggle switch at the bottom of the menu. You can also customize it according to your preferences by adding or removing tiles, changing theme colors and font sizes, etc.
The Start Menu is also much faster than its predecessor due to performance enhancements such as improved loading times and reduced memory usage. Additionally, it includes several new features such as Live Tiles which allow you to view live updates from your favorite apps without having to open them up separately; Jump Lists that provide one-click access to recent documents; an improved search bar that allows you type in what you are looking for instead of scrolling through everything; and a reorganized Power Options menu for easy access when shutting down or restarting your PC.
With all these improvements combined, using the Start Menu in Windows 11, version 22H2 is definitely an enjoyable experience overall.
Windows 11 21H2 vs 22H2: Tabbed File Explorer
Get ready to explore your files like never before with Windows 11’s new tabbed File Explorer! This feature allows you to view multiple folders and documents at the same time, making it easier to compare, organize, and browse.
You can also pin any folder you use often so that it’s always visible on the left side of the window, making it easy to access. Plus, the refreshed layout of the left navigation pane makes navigating through different locations simpler than ever.
The inline suggested actions feature is also a great addition to Windows 11’s File Explorer. When you open a file or click on an item in the File Explorer, this feature will display helpful options related to what you’re doing – like printing or sharing – right next to where you’re working. It even suggests relevant keyboard shortcuts when applicable!
With all these features combined, Windows 11’s tabbed File Explorer is sure to make managing your files more simple and efficient than ever before!
Windows 11 21H2 vs 22H2″ Tabbed Notepad
Make sure your notes stand out with Windows 11’s new tabbed Notepad! Easily compare, organize, and browse multiple documents at the same time – you’ll never miss an important detail again.
With the added support for tabs in the Notepad app, you can now have multiple documents open within a single window. This makes it easier to switch between documents as well as copy and paste content between them. And if that wasn’t enough, there’s even a new Tamil Anjal keyboard option to choose from! With this update, typing in Tamil is easier than ever before.
The tabbed Notepad feature also works for those using touch devices like tablets or convertible laptops. On these types of devices, the taskbar has been optimized for tablet use so that tabs can be dragged around easily onscreen without needing a mouse or trackpad.
HEVC support
Love how crisp videos look? With Windows 11’s version 22H2, you can now enjoy High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) support to make sure your videos look their best! HEVC gives you the ability to compress video files without sacrificing quality, so you can watch high-definition content in smaller file sizes.
Here’s what you’ll get with HEVC support:
- Better streaming performance: Stream videos faster and smoother than ever before. Enjoy less stuttering, buffering, and other issues that made streaming hard to do.
- Smaller file sizes: Save storage space by compressing video files into smaller formats while still retaining the same level of quality.
- Universal compatibility: Play video on any device with ease thanks to widespread adoption of HEVC across different platforms.
With all these features, it’s easy to see why HEVC support is such an important part of Windows 11 version 22H2! Not only will it provide a better streaming experience for users who watch a lot of videos, but it’ll also help them save space on their devices by using smaller file sizes for high-quality content.
This makes watching movies and shows more enjoyable than ever before!

SmartApp Control
You can now rest easy knowing that Smart App Control is protecting your device from malicious and untrusted apps – keeping you safe!
With this feature, Windows 11, version 22H2 adds significant protection from malware, including new and emerging threats. It helps to block potentially unwanted apps which may cause your device to run slowly, display unexpected ads, offer extra software you didn’t want or do other things you don’t expect.
Here are some of the features of Smart App Control:
- Blocks malicious and untrusted applications
- Helps block potentially unwanted apps
- Can be enabled on devices with Pluton capable processors running Windows 11, version 22H2
- Combines a secure subsystem which is part of the System on Chip (SoC) with Microsoft authored software that runs on this integrated secure subsystem.
Smart App Control also works alongside Windows security protections to help protect your computer against unwanted applications and keep it running smoothly.
Plus, it offers great peace of mind knowing that you have an additional layer of security in place.
Windows 11 21H2 vs 22H2: Phone Link App now supports iOS
Now you can connect your iOS devices to Windows 11 with the Phone Link app, giving you even more control and flexibility! The app is available for both Android and iOS devices, allowing you to quickly transfer data from one device to another. It also offers support for multiple accounts, allowing you to access all of your accounts from one place.
With the latest update in Windows 11 version 22H2, the Phone Link app now supports iOS as well. This means that users of iPhones and iPads can now seamlessly access their content across different operating systems without any issue.
The integration of Phone Link with iOS devices allows users to take advantage of a range of features that include location-based security protection, sharing files between devices, or streaming multimedia content across platforms. You can also use it as a hub for all your contacts, emails and other important information – managing them remotely on any compatible device.
The app also provides an easy way to stay connected with family and friends through its messaging feature which allows quick sending and receiving messages as well as photos and videos.

- The version your Windows 11 device is currently on reflects Microsoft’s build updates which are released yearly, unlike regular monthly updates.
- Currently, version 22H2 is the latest and improved version from the initial 21H2 that launched with the release of Windows 11.
If you’re new to the Windows 11 OS, you are probably not familiar with the Windows versions available. Microsoft regularly releases major updates in the form of versions.
For instance, now that Windows 11 is about to hit two years in the market, version 22H2 has been released, the first build since its release of the OS. Get to know about these versions and what they entail here.
What is the highest version of Windows 11?
First, before we get into the best version of Windows 11, it is important to point out a common mistake that most users make. It is easy to use the terms edition and version interchangeably to refer to the same thing.
However, these two terms mean something different. A version is a specific build of a product that receives regular updates and bug fixes to improve stability and performance over time.
There are various ways to check your current Windows 11 version, and we list all of them in our detailed article.
Historically, there were two major versions per year, but this is the first major update since Windows 11 came out. The latest and highest Windows 11 version is the 22H2, also known as Sun Valley 2.
On the other hand, Windows editions are the major release of Windows and are what you will find in retail boxes. When you check your OS specifications, you’ll find it is named either Windows Home or Windows Pro. These are editions.
Currently, there are 7 editions, namely:
- Windows 11 Home
- Windows 11 Pro
- Windows 11 Pro Education
- Windows 11 Pro for Workstations
- Windows 11 Enterprise
- Windows 11 Education
- Windows 11 Mixed Reality
The main difference between Windows 11 editions is the number of PCs they can be installed on and whether they are aimed at consumers or professionals.
How we test, review and rate?
We have worked for the past 6 months on building a new review system on how we produce content. Using it, we have subsequently redone most of our articles to provide actual hands-on expertise on the guides we made.
For more details you can read how we test, review, and rate at WindowsReport.
For instance, Windows 11 Home is a consumer-oriented operating system with some features removed to make it easier for new users to get started.
Windows 11 Pro is an enterprise-oriented operating system with all the features of Windows 11 Home and additional features for professional users.
What is the Windows 11 21H2 build version?
The initial Windows 11 build update was released in October 2021, and it is called Windows 11 21H2 build version. It’s the first build of Windows 11 since its release in and it brings a mix of improvements and new features to the operating system.
Most users are still on this build, as the latest 22H2 build is still fairly new. Microsoft is usually slow in making these updates publicly available as they want to ensure they are stable enough.
If you’re yet to receive this update, you can check through Windows update to get the latest version of Windows 11.
All features from the 21H2 version will be included in the 22H2 version alongside any other new feature improvements.
What is the difference between 21H2 and 22H2?
1. Security
The main difference between 21H2 and 22H2 is that the latter has more security features. Windows 11 has already been feted as the most secure OS yet, so it’s no surprise that this department will continue to flourish.
Any additional security is simply an enhancement of what was already there. Now in 22H2, you don’t have to worry about phishing as the Microsoft Defender SmartScreen has received a boost to protect your passwords and school work.
The Smart app control will also be a breath of fresh air, especially regarding unwanted apps and ads.
2. User interface
In the previous 21H2 version, opening the Task Manager would not match the system-wide theme. For instance, the dark mode theme would not reflect when you open the Task Manager.
Now, not only has the user interface received a facelift, but now the window will match the system-wide theme.
In addition, it is more efficient as you can now limit the usage of a single process. Unlike the previous version, you had to end superfluous tasks if you noticed high CPU usage.
3. Accessibility
The Windows accessibility features are designed to make using Windows easier for people with disabilities.
The accessibility features in Windows 11 include:
- Narrator – You can use your computer without a mouse or keyboard. The narrator provides spoken feedback, including text and alerts.
- Magnifier – You can zoom in on the content you see on your screen to help you work more effectively and easily. Magnifier also includes a high-contrast setting that makes it easier to read text.
- On-Screen Keyboard – You can use the On-Screen Keyboard to enter text without a physical keyboard.
All these have been present in 21H2, but now, in 22H2, Microsoft has added system-wide live captions and more natural voices. Sometimes, it can be hard to understand the narrator, so a more inclusive voice is a much-welcomed addition.
- Microsoft Paint Cocreator: A complete guide on the new AI tool
- Windows 11 adds more apps to the share links feature
4. High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) support
With version 21H2, to play HEVC videos, you had to get third-party software or install the HEVC extensions. This won’t be an issue in the 22H2 version, as support has now been included.
If you edit videos regularly or enjoy high-quality videos, you’ll appreciate this feature even more. Again, this all depends on the hardware capabilities of your Windows 11 device.
Which version of Windows 11 will I get?
As usual, any new feature updates in Windows 11 require that your device be eligible. By now, you must be aware of the stringent system requirements for Windows 11, and the same applies to whichever version you are on.
Therefore, any device not meeting these prerequisites may miss out on this version.
If you’re still on the 21H2 version, you may have either stopped your updates permanently or paused them. You’ll have to perform a manual check to upgrade to the 22H2 version.
Consequently, because this is a fairly new version, it is bound to have some bugs, so you may want to hold off on the upgrade until you are sure it is stable.
However, don’t hold off for too long because the version is nearing its end-of-service date, which is listed as October 2023. When the time comes, Microsoft will no longer send security updates to that version.
If the update is not what you expected, you can always uninstall recent Windows updates or create a restore point so that in case anything goes wrong, you can revert to an earlier time when your PC was functioning well.
Hopefully, this article has helped you differentiate between the two main versions available now for Windows 11.
Feel free to let us know of any additional thoughts you may have on this topic.

Windows 11 version 22H2 vs Windows 11 version 21H2
What changed from Windows 11 version 21H2 to Windows 11 version 22H2? Microsoft has released a detailed blog with the description of intended changes on Windows 11 version 22H2. We look at the main performance factors on Windows 11 version 22H2.
At the macro level, you need to understand that Microsoft has made changes to Windows 11 version 22H2 for enhancing performance. There are four main aspects of improvements on Windows 11 version 22H2.
- Windows 11 version 22H2 update file has a lower size.
- Windows 11 version 22H2 optimizes the language packs that ship with the operating system.
- Windows 11 version 22H2 also changes that way .NET updates will be applied on the system going forward.
- Finally, Microsoft has changed the process of rolling out the cumulative updates for Windows 11.
Reduced size of the update file
Microsoft has altered the approach towards installing the latest version of Windows 11 version 22H2. Non-system apps on Windows 11 will no longer be downloaded as part of the Windows Update process automatically.
This has been done to reduce the download size of the Windows 11 installer or update file. Microsoft has claimed that it has reduced the download size of Windows 11 version 22H2.
- Download size of Windows 11 version 22H2 reduced by 450 MB.
- Disk space installation requirement reduced by 399 MB in the lab. However, diagnostic data suggests that Windows 11 version 22H2 reduced installation disk requirements by up to 2.8 GB in comparison with Windows 11 21H2 version.
Lesser number of Language Packs
Windows 11 version 21H2 shipped with 110 language packs. To reduce the size of language packs, Microsoft has reduced the number of language packs in Windows 11 version 22H2 from 110 to 88 language packs. Additionally, 43 LXP that ship as part of the language packs have been removed as part of Windows 11 version 22H2 installer files.
The optimization of language packs has enabled reduction of the LXP or language packs size by 500 MB for Windows 11 version 22H2.
UUP Updates for Windows 11 version 22H2
Unified Update Platform or the UUP updates will be used for applying updates to the non-system apps and .NET framework. This reduces the size of cumulative updates that get rolled out for Windows 11.
By combining the .NET framework update through UUP, Microsoft seeks to reduce the system offline time by 30 percent. UUP updates do not lead to system restart. Therefore, .NET framework updates will not lead to system reboot. By saving the reboot instance, the system offline time will reduce.
Faster and optimized Cumulative Update Rollouts
Cumulate update process is expected to become faster and more efficient because of a couple of changes that have been introduced in the rollout process for Windows 11 version 22H2.
- Cumulative updates, language packs and optional updates will be downloaded on a differential basis. If your system has a specific build already installed, only the incremental changes from that build will be downloaded as part of the update process.
- Rather than downloading multiple update files, a single combined update file is downloaded as part of the cumulative updates.
- The servicing stack update files manage the update cache files and store the cumulative update files. Efficient caching of the cumulative update files help in prevent download of cumulative updates on multiple times.
So, what do we gain with the revised update process and for Windows 11 version 22H2.
Performance Gains from Windows 11 version 22H2
There are some measurable gains that can be attributed to Microsoft’s revised approach towards updating to Windows 11 version 22H2.
- There has been a reduction in disk space requirements for Windows 11 version 22H2.
