- Windows Lean is the smallest OS from Microsoft and it occupies half the space of Windows 10.
- This slimmed-down OS was created for tablets with 16 GB of free memory.
- Windows Lean doesn’t support CD or DVD drives and doesn’t have certain important features found in Windows 10.

You probably heard that there’s a Windows 10 version on a diet and the latest reports say that the slimmed-down OS was available for download.
Windows 10 Lean is the minimum viable version of Windows 10 and it obviously runs on low specs devices.
Compared to the Windows 10 Pro, the Windows 10 Lean download is 2GB smaller and it occupies half of what Windows 10 would normally do after installation.
How can I download and install Windows 10 Lean?
1. What is Windows 10 Lean all about?
In this OS version, 175 MB is destined for apps and games, and drivers, programs, and wallpapers are missing from this small version of Windows 10.
If you compare the OS with Windows 10 Pro, over 55,500 files are missing. Another feature of Windows Lean is low resource usage. The 64-bit OS is using 1.5GB RAM and it’s great for a virtual machine.
It’s safe to say that Windows 10 is basically a legacy-free version of Windows 10. For instance, the Control Panel is empty instead of being flooded with items.
You can still install Win32 apps on it, unlike Windows RT which doesn’t allow it.
2. What is Windows 10 Lean’s purpose?
Windows 10 Lean reportedly targets tablets with 16GB of storage space but isn’t limited to those.
The OS would also make a perfect base for an operating system that is based on C-Shell. But the cut-down version of Windows 10 would have to offer a desktop.
3. How can I download and install Windows 10 Lean
Update: In the meantime, Windows 10 Lean has become obsolete and it’s not available for installation anymore.
The Windows 10 Lean ISO is still available on WindowslogItalia, but Microsoft doesn’t offer any support for it so we wouldn’t advise you to use it.
However, we have to thank Microsoft for another instance of the Windows 10 OS for low-memory devices: Windows 10 S.
You can find Windows 10 S on a lot of devices nowadays and mostly on laptops and 2-in-1 devices. This OS is not actually a distinct OS but only an iteration of Windows 10.
The S-mode of Windows 10 was created for educational purposes and it’s usually preinstalled by OEM or system builders, not by end-users.
If you have a device with Windows 10 S, you can disable the S mode although there have been problems with that process before.
However, you shouldn’t disable the S mode unless you are absolutely sure that your device can run Windows 10 because this is an irreversible process.

We managed to get the 64-bit (Lean) 17655 from my old computer. No 32-bit sorry. Use Google Account to log in to copy the file to your Google Drive.
Verify you’ve got the correct ISO file
After you have the ISO, just to ensure right click on it select Mount. Open wither Powershell (as Admin) or Command Prompt and type the following command. (You may get ISO from websites, before making a bootable USB consider checking the authenticity of the ISO file, here is how).
dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:H:\sources\install.esd /index:1Variables - install.wim / install.esd | :H: change it with the virtual drive letter.
Make bootable media
Use Rufus or any other tool to create bootable media. Check this guide for more help.
Start the setup
Just like the original Windows 10 setup, you will be going through on-screen instructions that you need to follow in order to install Windows 10 Lean. You had throughout the process we have a guide for that as well that you can check here.
first part.
The second part is pretty much simple if you installed through a bootable USB flash drive now it’s time to unplug it Windows will ask you to account information like for example what name do you want to use for your computer account. If possible connect the computer to a Wi-Fi network when prompt so that way you will get the latest drivers automatically installed.
How to use the tool (outdated)
Since I updated the link with ISO file, no need to follow this section.
Step 1. Download the tool.
Step 2. Extract it, under it you’ll see this file “CreatingISO.bat” or (aria2_download in Mirror) File.
This will download all the files required and using a tool aria2. It will download the files from the Microsoft server and later it will convert them to ISO file that you can use.
Step 3. Open the extracted folder, run creatingISO (aria2_download in Mirror) file, this script is an automated script that will download all the files using the Aria2 download program. This is necessary to download multiple files at once.
Step 4. Once done, this script will execute another tool that you can find inside the same folder. Run the UUP-Convert to start converting downloaded files to Windows 10 Lean ISO.
That’s it, now use the ISO to create bootable media. That’s it you should stop here, the below instructions are for people who want only Windows 10 Lean edition in the Windows 10 ISO.
Use this method when you want to save bandwidth (archived)
Also, I’m going to guide you in creating Windows 10 Lean (64bit or 32bit) ISO file that you can use to install Windows 10 on any computer. We are only going to download a specific Windows 10 lean file so that only that particular edition file should be present in ISO file to make the image file compact as possible. This is to spend less bandwidth and save time, especially when you’re not on an ultra-fast connection.
You need Windows 10 insider preview latest UUP files = Save files according to the specific edition you want for example we are downloading single language insider preview UUP files for 64-bit.

This tool will start downloading the Windows 10 Lean files and save them inside a folder.
# Download Windows 10 Lean ESD file = get it from here (deleted)
The ESD file that you download is responsible for the Lean version.
Rename this Windows 10 lean ESD to CloudE-en-us.esd and then rename it to the “Core_en-us.esd” for example if your CORE.ESD file name is CoreSingleLanguage_en-us.esd copy this name and change name of the CloudE_en-us.esd
Note: Replace any of these below files to CloudE_en-us.esd
Professional_en-us.esd / ProfessionalN_en-us.esd / Core_en-us.esd / CoreN_en-us.esdNow rename Original CloudE_en-us.esd >> Core_en-us.esd
This is a 2 step method that will save your bandwidth, it will download something 3GB of files. If you don’t care about you can run the above-given tool, which downloads Windows 10 Lean files along with other editions and convert them to Windows 10 Lean ISO.
2. (Optional) Prepare ISO (When not used the tool)
Download this UUP to ISO converter tool, extract it on your desktop inside it there is a folder “UUP” copy all of your downloaded files into that folder and run the youtube convert file do you have a few options to choose whether you want to create an iso with install.wim or install.esd file obviously the ESD option will create a smaller ISO file because it is more compressed and not encrypted.

Conclusion; Windows 10 Lean
Windows Lean was a concept that only made into single insider preview release. We managed to get our hands on 64-bit ISO which was created the same time when version 17655 was released.
It’d be a bad idea to use this as a daily driver, you face bugs on this unfinished version of Windows 10.

Выхода новой облегчённой версии Windows 10 Lean все ожидали нынешней осенью, однако никакой новой информации, как и официального подтверждения от Microsoft о её выходе так и не появилось. А ведь какие надежды на неё возлагались…
Версия Windows 10 Lean была задумана для устройств с небольшим внутренним хранилищем, объёмом до 16 ГБ и стать самой шустрой в линейке. За счёт отсутствия привычных драйверов для CD и DVD-приводов (у меня его уже в принципе нет несколько лет), дополнительных тем оформления и части редко используемых компонентов, общее количество файлов установленной системы сокращалось примерно на 50 000. В результате объём дискового пространства, требуемый под установку Windows 10 Lean сокращается почти в два раза по сравнению с домашней или Pro версией и занимает всего около 6 ГБ на диске.
Я ставил себе инсайдерскую версию Windows 10 Lean (CloudE/S) на виртуальную машину и могу сказать, что для отзывчивой работы ей вполне хватало даже 1 Гб выделенной оперативной памяти, но то была ещё очень «сырая» сборка версии 17650. При желании, её можно найти на торрентах или специализированных форумах, более свежих готовых сборок Windows 10 Lean мне найти не удалось. Оставлю тут ссылочку на один забугорный ресурс с рассказом о её установке.
Что такое инсайдерская версия Windows 10 Insider Preview и где её можно скачать?
Образ предрелизной версии Windows 10 Insider Preview (ранее называлась Technical Preview) можно получить абсолютно бесплатно, по программе предварительной оценки Windows Insider, доступной на официальном сайте Microsoft. У каждой сборки есть свое время на тестирование, потому никаких ключей в этом случае вводить не нужно. По идее, таким образом можно вполне законно бесплатно пользоваться последними версиями Windows 10.
Штука эта весьма полезная, если вам интересно одним из первых получать доступ к новым функциям Windows и есть желание потестировать их на наличие багов, отправляя отзывы в приложении Feedback Hub. У Apple имеется аналогичный инструмент Feedback Assistant, которым я пользовался при тестировании macOS Mojave и отправил парочку багов разработчикам.
Загрузить образ актуальной версии Windows 10 Insider Preview можно по ссылке https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windowsinsiderpreviewiso, правда это будет не Windows 10 Lean.
