  • [SOLVED] «Install Guest Additions» doesn’t work on Windows XP guest OS

  1. «Install Guest Additions» doesn’t work on Windows XP guest OS

For the last couple of versions of the Virtualbox Windows Guest Additions, I have been unable to install updated Guest Additions in the standard way. That is, the Devices->Install Guest Additions… menu item does nothing, except it opens the tray on my DVD/CD-RW drive.

I do have Windows Guest Additions 3.2.0r61806 installed on the Windows XP guest OS, but I had to download the new Guest Additions CD image manually. I can’t remember where I got that CD image, so I have no idea where to download the newer 3.2.6 Guest Additions image. So far, Googling has turned up nothing helpful. Oracle seems to have it well-hidden.

So how do I get the latest Guest Additions installed? It seems that Oracle assumes the «Install Guest Additions» item will always work, so they provide no way to download the CD image directly. What a pain.

FWIW, I am using Virtualbox 3.2.6 PUEL, not OSE. I have the Oracle Virtulabox repository in my software sources, so I get prompted for updates as they’re released.

  2. Re: «Install Guest Additions» doesn’t work on Windows XP guest OS

If you open the Virtualbox interface, go to the File menu and select the Virtual Media Manager, you will find a tab that says CD/DVD Images. The VBoxGuesAdditions.iso should be listed in the box. If it is present, then we can easily mount it in the guest.

Open the settings for the selected virtual machine. Go to Storage. Click on the CD icon under IDE Controller. In the right hand part of the window, click on the pull down menu next to CD/DVD Device and choose VBoxGuestAdditions.iso. Click OK.

The CD should mount inside of your Windows XP VM. If it doesn’t autorun, then just open My Computer, open the CD drive, and run the setup.exe file.

    Cheers!

  3. Re: «Install Guest Additions» doesn’t work on Windows XP guest OS

I know how to do all that. The problem is not installing the Guest Additions, it’s getting the CD image to install from. All I have is the last one, 3.2.0r61806. I keep getting a notification that there is a new set of Guest Additions available when I start my Windows XP virtual machine, but I can’t install them because I can’t get the CD image.Isn’t there some way to download the CD image, without the «automagic» menu item within Virtualbox? Since the menu item is broken, I can’t download the CD image from whatever secret URL Virtualbox would normally use.

Finally, I found the URL. For future reference, it’s here: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/

I was able to install the Guest Additions after mounting the new CD image, as you described. This isn’t really «fixed» because the «Install Guest Additions…» menu item seems to be permanently broken. But, it’s able to be worked around, and I guess that’s worth something.

Hi,
My host is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, and guest is Windows XP SP3. Today I’ve received update from synaptic to Vbox 3.2.10. Everything was fine, until I started guest OS. Update GA in guest OS crash everytime. Here is log:

After guest OS restart I was asked to update driver for device «Virtualbox Device» so I’ve extracted VBoxWindowsAdditions-x86 /extract /D=C:\Drivers and manually updated drivers for this device.

I’m attaching log from Vbox Host too. I’m not running VirtualBox Open Source Edition (OSE)

Have you tried to uninstall the guest additions on the XP guest first, then install the new guest additions by selecting install the guest additions from the device tab at the top left of the guest window?

I have this problem too with new version 3.2.12. And yes, I’ve tried uninstall Vbox Guest Additions, reboot and then install. Same problem, with same exception.

Guys, having the same problem, upgraded vbox from 3.2.10 to 3.2.12. I am on win7 x64 , virtual XPx86 always worked ok. On first run after vbox upgrade crashes, had to run in safe mode, uninstalled vbox addittions, rebooted. Installed .12 additions, rebooted, CRASHES AGAIN.
3.2.12 additions are causing problems in xp VM.

Okay. I figured out and fixed my problem with the help of the following webpage.

http://www.computercorrect.com/2010/vir … -xp-error/

In short:

The issue stems from a bug in Windows XP/2000 where new hardware cannot properly be detected if the “RunOnce” key is missing in the registry beneath: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

To fix the problem:

1. Navigate to Start > Run and enter “regedit”.
2. Then find: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
3. With “CurrentVersion” selected, go to the Edit menu and click New > Key
4. Name the key “RunOnce”, and leave everything else at defaults.

NOTE: The new “RunOnce” key should appear underneath the “CurrentVersion” key.

After you’ve added the key, reboot your virtual machine and reinstall guest additions. Everything should go as expected.

Hummm,

When you start the guest and then you click on install additions. The autostart process should begin, but if it does not, go to your file manager and start it from there.
Conversely you can click on the device tab and go to the CD/DVD and click on remove disk from the virtual drive. Wait a minute and then click on install guest additions again.

OK,

uninstalled guest additions, reinstalled them. Auto-start process (install wizzard) works, but guest resolution wouldn’t match VBox windows size…

Klicked on auto-resize guest display (Host-Key+G), which did the trick for me.

Now everything works as I expect it should.

Thanks.

I have set up windows xp on virtual box on my laptop which is running Ubuntu 12.10. Now, I am trying to install guest additions on the vm. But, whenever I click it, it doesn’t open the oracle window. Nothing comes up actually. I tried doing this in safe mode, but it still doesn’t work. Someone please help.

I recently tried this too, had the same problem and was looking for an answer and came across this. Found the solution randomly myself.
When i opened Windows Explorer/My Computer I saw «VirtualBox Guest Additions» as a Disc in the drive. I guess auto play for disc’s isn’t enabled for WinXP x64. Double clicking it ran the installation

This solution also works for me running Windows 7 as the host and Windows XP
as the guest.

  1. On the windows guest open My Computer. You will see
  2. Devices with removable storage and under that Virtual box additions.
  3. Click on this and the additions will install.

One other problem I initially had, was I could not display the guest window on my screen. I could only see the preview pane in the Virtual box manager screen. Solution:

  1. Go to the host taskbar and hover over the Virtual box icon.
  2. Look for the guest window thumbnail and hover over it and right click on it and select move to monitor 1. (I have a video card that supports two monitors)

Now I could see the guest window on my display.
