Installing Exchange Server 2010 is a pretty straight forward task unless you have taken care of everything that is required. If you follow the steps mentioned here, I promise you that you will be able to complete the installation without any hiccups.

If you get lost in the process you may or may NOT reach your destination, but even if you do, it is likely that you will take a lot longer and travel over more challenging roads.

To those who have worked with Exchange server 2007, the Exchange Server 2010 Installation wizard may seem very familiar. The Wizard walks the administrator through the installation of several of the prerequisites and allows for the selection of specific server roles for deployment. However, it does not cover many things that can lead to a very challenging roads and may seem too much to handle.

There are steps that must be taken to prepare the Active Directory environment and steps that must be taken to prepare the underlying operating system on the server you are installing on.

Therefore, I will be dividing this topic in to different sections and will focus on deploying a new Exchange Server 2010 installation from scratch. In addition, this post assumes that the supporting infrastructure and server operating system do not exist and includes step-by-step instructions on how to install Windows Server 2008 R2, Active Directory, supporting configuration settings, and the Exchange Server 2010 prerequisites from scratch.

Step 1. Prerequisites

I installed Service pack 1 on Windows Server 2008 R2 where I can overcome without installing hotfixes for Exchange 2010

Step 2. Microsoft Filter Pack

Download and Install “Microsoft Filter Pack” (64bit Version)

Step 3.

On the Start menu, navigate to All Programs > Accessories > Windows PowerShell. Open an elevated Windows PowerShell console (Right Click – Run as administrator), and run the following command.

Import-Module ServerManager 

And Running this command for typical installation where all the roles will be installed HUB , CAS and Mailbox Servers

Add-WindowsFeature NET-Framework,RSAT-ADDS,Web-Server,Web-Basic-Auth,Web-Windows-Auth,Web-Metabase,Web-Net-Ext,Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console,WAS-Process-Model,RSAT-Web-Server,Web-ISAPI-Ext,Web-Digest-Auth,Web-Dyn-Compression,NET-HTTP-Activation,Web-Asp-Net,Web-Client-Auth,Web-Dir-Browsing,Web-Http-Errors,Web-Http-Logging,Web-Http-Redirect,Web-Http-Tracing,Web-ISAPI-Filter,Web-Request-Monitor,Web-Static-Content,Web-WMI,RPC-Over-HTTP-Proxy
-Restart

Step 4. Reboot the Server

Now Prerequisites Installed successfully

Step 5.

Now open Command Prompt “Browse the Command prompt into the setup location”

and Run

setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions or setup /pl

We run this as we prepare the legacy (Exchange 2003) Server permissions,

Running this command won’t harm your environment .

Befor Running this command make sure your
Domain Function Level and
Forest Functional level in Windows Server 2003 is in native mode and your
Exchange 2003 is in native mode,

Otherwise , It won’t allow you to install Exchange 2010

Step 6.Preparing the Schema

Setup.com /PrepareSchema

Step 7.Preparing Active Directory

Setup.com /preparead /OrganizationName:”First Organization”

This Switch can be removed if you have an Exchange Server already in your Organization

/OrganizationName:”First Organization”

Or if you want to change the organization name . you can use this switch

Step 8.prepare the domain

Setup.com /Preparedomain

If you have multiple domains run Setup.com /preparealldomains

Step 9.Start the Setup

Step 10. Choose Typical to Install : HUB,CAS and Mailbox

Give a Check mark for Automatically install Windows Server roles

Step 12. Domain name

If this is my internetfacing server , Give the external domain name

Step 13. Configure mail flow

If Exchange 2003 Exists in your Environment , you will get this option to configure mail flow between these Servers

Step 14. Now Setup will Run for some time

Step 15.Reboot your Server

Exchange server is one of the popular messaging platform in enterprise. Today I will show you steps to install Exchange server 2010 in Windows Server 2008 R2. There are some operating system prerequisites that must be fulfilled to install the Exchange server successfully. Basic hardware requirements are 64-bit processor with at least 2 GB of RAM (1 GB per core is recommended) and 1.6 GB of free disk space where Exchange will be installed. The operating system prerequisites are different for different Windows Server versions and service packs. 

The diagram below shows our network scenario. We don’t have any existing Exchange instance. So we will install Exchange server in fresh environment.

Installation prerequisites

1. The forest functional level of the DC must be at least Server 2003 or later.
2. Active Directory Schema master must be running in Server 2003 or later.
3. Exchange Server must be member of DC but not Edge Transport Server.
4. The Domain Controller must be a Global Catalog server in this (local) domain.
5. Install .Net Framework 3.5 from Server Manager Add New Features wizard in MBG-Mail Server.
6. Download and install 2007 Office System Converter: Microsoft Filter Pack in MBG-Mail.

Exchange Server 2010 Installation Steps

Now, insert Exchange server installation disc or ISO Image into the drive. Then open command prompt from start menu as Administrator. Move your root directory to drive where Exchange media resides. Mine is in drive D,

C:\Users\Administrators> D: [Enter]. (Moves the prompt to drive D:)

The first step is to extend the existing Active Directory Schema. This requires installation of RSAT-ADDS tool. Open PowerShell and hit the following command to install RSAT-ADDS.

Import-Module ServerManager

Add-WindowsFeature RSAT-ADDS

After installing RSAT-ADDS tool, restart the server. Open Command Prompt. Type following command to prepare active directory for installing Exchange Server. 

D:\> setup /prepareschema [Enter]

The second step is to prepare Active Directory for Exchange installation. Type your organization name in Organization Name switch. Hit the following command in command prompt.

D:\> setup /prepareAD /OrganizationName:MustBeGeek [Enter]

Now to prepare this domain for Exchange server installation, hit the following commands in command prompt.

D:\> setup /PrepareDomain [Enter]

Now open Windows Powershell and import Server Manager Module,

C:\> Import-Module ServerManager

Run the following command. This command will start mode for the Net. Tcp port sharing service to automatic.

C:\> Set-Service NetTcpPortSharing -StartupType Automatic

Now, we will install typical Exchange server that includes, Hub Transport, Client Access and Mailbox. These roles are typical if you are installing only one Exchange server for small environment. Log on to MBG-Mail server with domain administrator account.

Now copy and paste the following command in PowerShell. Simply copy the command and right-click the mouse button to paste on PowerShell Window. The CTRL+C and CTRL+V doesn’t work inside PowerShell. These command will install all the prerequisites in this server. Different set of commands are available for different Windows Server versions and different Exchange requirement.

Add-WindowsFeature NET-Framework,RSAT-ADDS,Web-Server,Web-Basic-Auth,Web-Windows-Auth,Web-Metabase,Web-Net-Ext,Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console,WAS-Process-Model,RSAT-Web-Server,Web-ISAPI-Ext,Web-Digest-Auth,Web-Dyn-Compression,NET-HTTP-Activation,Web-Asp-Net,Web-Client-Auth,Web-Dir-Browsing,Web-Http-Errors,Web-Http-Logging,Web-Http-Redirect,Web-Http-Tracing,Web-ISAPI-Filter,Web-Request-Monitor,Web-Static-Content,Web-WMI,RPC-Over-HTTP-Proxy -Restart

After completing the installation, the server restarts. After starting the server open the Exchange setup from installation media. You will then see following screen.

As step 1 and step 2 is already completed. Now click the language to install. I will click to install only languages from the DVD. Then click step 4 to install Microsoft Exchange. You will soon see the following box,

Read the introduction and click Next button. Then choose to accept the license agreement and click Next button. Choose No for error reporting to Microsoft and click Next button. Choose the installation type as Typical.

Then click Next button. Type the organization name and click Next.

Select No for Exchange client settings,

In configure client access server external domain option. Type the domain name that will be used to access Mail server from Internet, for example, mail.mustbegeek.com.

Click Next. Under Customer Experience Improvement Program, choose I don’t wish to join the program at this time and click Next button.

The installation will now go through readiness checks. If there are some errors then it will notify you. Go back and correct those errors if any. If every checks succeeds then you will see similar screen,

Click Install button to begin installing Exchange server.

After installation completes click Finish. You can now configure Exchange server to send and receive external mails.

Installing Exchange Server 2010 Pre-Requisites on Windows Server 2008 R2

Exchange Server 2010 can be installed on either Windows Server 2008 64-bit with Service Pack 2, or Windows Server 2008 64-bit R2, and either Standard or Enterprise editions.

In this post I’ll walk through installing the pre-requisites for Exchange Server 2010 on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Servers that will host the Hub Transport or Mailbox server roles require the Microsoft Filter Pack which can be downloaded here: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=137042

After installing the Filter Pack run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell console.

Import-Module ServerManager

To install a “Typical” Exchange server running the Client Access, Hub Transport, and Mailbox server roles, run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell console.

Add-WindowsFeature NET-Framework,RSAT-ADDS,Web-Server,Web-Basic-Auth,Web-Windows-Auth,Web-Metabase,Web-Net-Ext,Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console,WAS-Process-Model,RSAT-Web-Server,Web-ISAPI-Ext,Web-Digest-Auth,Web-Dyn-Compression,NET-HTTP-Activation,RPC-Over-HTTP-Proxy -Restart

Note that other combinations of server roles require different groups of pre-requisites. You can see a complete list of these options here.

The server will require a restart, which will occur automatically by using the –Restart switch on the command above.

After the restart launch another elevated Windows PowerShell console and run the following command.

Set-Service NetTcpPortSharing -StartupType Automatic

After installing the pre-requisites run Microsoft Update to verify the latest updates and patches are applied to the server before proceeding with the Exchange Server 2010 install.
