There is no windows program configured to open this type
Hello,
my Windows app on Linux opens an file explorer window where is mp4 file and clicking on it says:
There is no windows program configured to open this type
So i found https://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ where is chapter «6.6.3 How do I associate a native program with a file type in Wine?»
But i do not understand that example on how i need to apply it to video files like mp4.
I already installed media player classic windows app thru Wine:
/home/ME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/MPC-HC/mpc-hc64.exe
What is the easiest way to associate all video types to this media player?

Generally winemenubuilder will make the associations when installing the app. If it didn’t, you can make the associations yourself the same way you would for any native app, using whatever tools your desktop environment provides. I can tell you that for KDE, it’s done in Configure Desktop => Applications => File Associations. Beyond that, ask for help on your distro forum; how to configure your desktop environment isn’t really a Wine question.

There is no workaround for Wine’s file explorer that I know of.
As to your question at the end of your original post, I already answered it: the easiest way to associate all video types with MPC-HC is to do it through your desktop environment. That should enable you to open those files directly from your native file manager rather than bothering with Wine’s file explorer at all.

@dimesio You think i can make Wine to open my file manager (Thunar) instead of stupid Wine explorer? I am using XFCE4.
I just tried to use MIME type manager and ressinged mp4 from Linux MPV to MPC-HC (windows), but the error message i described in first post still appears in wine ran apps (these was restarted after MIME change)
And how i can make wine apps to open folder in Thunar instead of in stupid WIne explorer?

Wine «not configured», please help
I figured out my problem with WoW install, but now I do not know how to fix it. I have installed the latest version of Wine from Synaptic. I try to open a program (e.g. WoW), and it tells me «there is no Windows program configured to open this type of file». When I try to do a Wine update in Terminal, it blatantly says that it’s not going to install the file. Please help. Thank you.

Re: Wine «not configured», please help
I’m not a regular user of Wine, but if memory serves correctly, there is this command from the terminal:
If someone else comes up with a better suggestion, I’ll defer to their wisdom.

I haven’t used winecfg in a while, I usually just click on Apps -> Wine -> Configure Wine..
I was bored and waiting on a response to another thread, so i decided to look at my wine configuration by using «winecfg»
i got this!
err:winebootendingRename couldn’t get file attributes (2)and the winecfg still opened.
Got the Java & Ubuntu caffeine fix!

Re: Wine «not configured», please help
Thank you for the responses, but when I go into «configure wine» a lot comes up and it seems configured. When I type «winecfg» it says «cannot allocate memory». This is so frustrating!

you have the newest version of wine.. i wish i could solve my problem.. it should be working for you.
Also, have you tried changing the current OS from «Windows XP» to «Windows 2000» in winecfg ?

I just did that, but no change. What should other things in Wine be set to though? This is my only my 2nd experience trying to use a Windows program…

Re: Wine «not configured», please help
go into ubuntu software center and search «wine»
There should be two results. Open up the first one, and tell me if it says «Install» or «Remove» (DO NOT CLICK JUST LOOK)
Regardless of what it says, go back, and click on the 2nd result (Beta Release) and tell me if it says «Install» or «Remove»It may seem pointless to you but I’m trying to figure out my problem as well as help you

I don’t understand where you are telling me to go. If I go to Synaptic it tells me 1.2 is installed. Is this what you mean?

«There is no Windows program configured to run this type of file.»
I just finished installing an application and tried to open it , but got an error that reads «There is no Windows program configured to run this type of file.» I don’t know if that means I should change the configuration of something I already have, or if I should install something new to help it run. The application just appears on my Finder as a .app, and already have DXVK installed. I read through an article about this problem and it said I should install the Microsoft .NET framework, but that hasn’t helped.
If it’s of any help, I’m running MacOS 11.6 on a 2020 M1 MacBook Air.

Not sure if this helps, but are you using a 32 or 64 bit bottle. I hit this error myself and it took me some time before I realised that although the application was 32 bit, the installer and patcher I was using with it had been written in 64 bit. As soon as I created a 64 bit bottle for the application it worked.
How would I be able to do that?

I am having trouble running .reg
files with wine. I have tried a few solutions that other people have used but when I launch it return the following error:
There is no windows program configured to open this type of file.
I have tried the following:
wine regedit regkey.reg
- Importy registry file in regedit
wine start regkey.reg
The .reg
file I am using works fine in my actual Windows system.

I managed to reimport exports done with wine’s $> regedit
:
wine start regedit.exe /home/myname/path/foo.reg
Note: foo.reg
coming from wine’s regedit looks a little different than usual_:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SomeApplication\Layout]
"WindowState"="1"
"FormWidth"="800"
"FormHeight"="600"
"FormTop"="50"
"FormLeft"="50"
In constrast the (non-working) native form:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-123456789-1000\Software\SomeApplication\Layout]
"WindowState"="1"
The first version works reliably. But I am not sure, how to transform the latter to the former… (replacing line 1 is trivial, but according to what rules getting to those „simplified“ keys…)

I managed to find the problem. It might have had something to do with the original solutions I posted. After I had done those I clicked on the .reg file and said «Open With Wine Registry Editor»

For some reason I was not able to see, when right click on .reg
file, «Open with wine Registry Editor»…maybe because of wine version. buy the way I found another way to run .reg
files.
You need to open regedit
from Playonlinux configuration options.
- Open Playonlinux
- Open «Configure»
- Select the program from the list you need to apply the
.reg
file - Select Wine «window»
- Registry Editor
- Import
.reg
file
It worked for me but still I can not understand why I can not see «Open with wine registry editor» when right click on the .reg
file.
