The best antivirus for windows 10

Рейтинг антивирусного ПО для Windows составлен на основе обзоров ведущих западных и отечественных журналов по кибербезопасности. Для анализа были взяты материалы из топ-10 Яндекса и Google — список формировался по ряду последних частотных запросов, в том числе «лучший антивирус 2022», «топ антивирусов 2022», «top antivirus 2022», «best antivirus 2022».

Были рассмотрены как платные, так и бесплатные приложения, часть из которых тоже попали в рейтинг. Также сделан подробный анализ каждой антивирусной программы, вошедшей в топ-10.

Как начислялись баллы

За первое место в каждом из обзоров антивирусное ПО получало 10 баллов. Далее за каждое последующее место очередное приложение получало на балл меньше, то есть 9 за второе, 8 за третье и вплоть до 1 балла за 10-е место (если это место фигурировало в обзоре, поскольку некоторые авторы не посчитали нужным выделять более 7-8 разработчиков). После все баллы суммировались, и приложения распределялись в рейтинге на основе общего количества набранных баллов. Что касается ведущих российских продуктов (в особенности Kaspersky), они были оставлены на тех же местах, на которых фигурировали в прошлогодних обзорах тех же сайтов, если ссылки на эти обзоры еще были активны. О причине такого решения рассказываем ниже в разделе «Общий рейтинг антивирусных программ».

Для анализа были отобраны не отдельные пакеты, а группы пакетов, выпускаемые отдельными разработчиками. Например, платные и бесплатные или платные разного уровня, то есть с различной функциональностью и стоимостью. Причина такого решения проста: все пакеты одного разработчика работают по одним и тем же алгоритмам, а значит с одинаковой эффективностью справляются со своей основной работой. Также мы намеренно не делили приложения по наличию и степени монетизации.

Цель обзора — выбор наиболее мощной группы антивирусных пакетов среди всех имеющихся, прежде всего, по качеству работы. И далее как раз о тех критериях, по которым специалисты тестировали антивирусное ПО.

Критерии оценки антивирусных пакетов

Существует три основных требования, которым должен соответствовать антивирусный пакет, претендующий на первые строчки рейтинга:

• Высокий процент и высокая скорость обнаружения вредоносного ПО.

• Удобство использования: понятный интерфейс, отсутствие частых всплывающих сообщений, минимальное количество ложных срабатываний.

• Минимальное влияние на производительность системы.

Первый критерий — безусловно, самый важный. То есть, если антивирусное ПО почти не грузит систему и легко настраивается, но при этом приложение пропускает критические угрозы, пользы от него немного. Поэтому почти все пакеты, попавшие в топ-10, обладают очень хорошим уровнем обнаружения и нейтрализации киберугроз. В первом пункте также важно сочетание высокого процента и высокой скорости обнаружения. Если угрозы обнаруживаются быстро, но не все — это плохо. Но немногим лучше, когда угрозы обнаруживаются, но медленно, так как запоздалая реакция на угрозу может позволить вирусам натворить немало дел перед тем, как их обнаружат.

Однако это еще не все моменты, которые следует учитывать. В наше время многие антивирусные пакеты поставляются не в «чистом» виде, как это было лет двадцать назад, а с дополнительными функциями. Это, например, возможность резервного копирования для важных файлов, наличие приложения для безопасности мобильных устройств, продвинутый брандмауэр, функции родительского контроля, возможность использовать купленную программу сразу на нескольких устройствах или ПК. Добавим сюда функции уничтожения файлов, возможность включения VPN и обеспечение конфиденциальности, веб-защиту в режиме реального времени и программу для сканирования электронной почты, а также ряд других полезных функций. Поэтому наборы дополнительных услуг и их соответствие стоимости также учитывались, хотя и не в первую очередь.

Ниже представлен полный список критериев — в порядке убывания значимости. Именно по ним специалисты определяли лучшие антивирусные программы текущего года, а мы составили сводный рейтинг:

• Результаты тестирования независимыми лабораториями. Это такие лаборатории, как AV-Test Institute, SE Labs, AV-Comparatives и ряд других. При этом учитывались результаты как краткосрочного, так и длительного тестирования (в течение нескольких месяцев). Последнее необходимо для проверки качества обнаружения шпионского, рекламного ПО и некоторых других типов вредоносных программ.

• Процент ложных срабатываний. Новые вредоносные программы появляются ежедневно, и редкое антивирусное программное обеспечение может регулярно обнаруживать их все, то есть в 100% случаев. Но для удобства пользователей очень важно решить проблему ложных срабатываний. Поэтому, если антивирусник не слишком «остро» реагирует на каждую не типичную ситуацию и позволяет вам свободно просматривать файлы и сайты без ухудшения качества сканирования, ему это только в плюс.

• Дополнительные функции и их стоимость. Об этом уже было сказано выше.

• Поддерживаемые устройства. Если вы нашли лучший антивирус для Windows 11 , это не значит, что он будет работать на вашем смартфоне. Поэтому универсальность тоже важна.

• Производительность. Если у вас не новейший ПК, антивирусное сканирование может снизить производительность. Поэтому низкая нагрузка на систему может стать дополнительным фактором для поднятия антивирусного пакета в рейтинге.

• Простота использования. Каким бы сложным ни было лучшее антивирусное ПО, даже не слишком опытный пользователь должен иметь возможность сканировать свой компьютер или другое устройство без значительных неудобств.

• Цена. Пытаться сэкономить на защите своих устройств не слишком хорошая идея. Но с другой стороны, нет причин выбирать программное обеспечение, которое предлагается по заведомо завышенной цене. И если по самым важным критериям оценки два пакета примерно равны, выше будет стоять тот, который предлагает те же возможности по более доступной цене.

Общий рейтинг антивирусных программ

После подсчета всех баллов (список ссылок на главные обзоры, которые мы использовали для составления рейтинга, вы найдете в конце статьи) антивирусные продукты заняли следующие места:

Интересно, что российский флагман Kaspersky занял почетное второе место. И это несмотря на то, что он был искусственно понижен в ряде обзоров, недосчитавшись из-за этого добрых пары десятков баллов. Авторы ряда авторитетных журналов (например, Tom’s Guide или TechRadar) честно признают, что Kaspersky всё равно остается лучшим по критически важным показателям, но отдать ему первое место не могут по причинам, о которых будет написано ниже.

Также интересно, что не попали в топ-10 такие известные продукты, как, например, Webroot, Emsisoft, Bullguard, ESET и Panda. А TotalAV стоит выше AVG благодаря наиболее высокому месту в одном из обзоров. Теперь рассмотрим эти антивирусные приложения более подробно, а если не хотите много читать, прямо под описанием каждого кратко перечислены его плюсы и минусы.

1. Bitdefender

Авторы большинства обзоров отмечают высокие показатели обнаружения вредоносных программ этого антивирусного ПО. Однако при этом активное фоновое сканирование Bitdefender влияет на производительность системы. Поэтому на слабых ПК, находясь в интернете, не рекомендуется запускать какие-то другие приложения, кроме самых легких.

Пользователи Windows могут воспользоваться встроенными функциями Bitdefender: менеджером паролей, надежным средством уничтожения файлов (программой-шредером), а также мощной Ransomware-защитой (об этом виде угроз мы уже писали ранее) и функциями для повышения конфиденциальности при работе в интернете. Эти функции, которые в Bitdefender включены в платный пакет начального уровня, как правило, встречаются лишь в премиум-пакетах, поэтому для бюджетного решения это однозначный плюс.

Кроме того, Bitdefender добавляет к этим возможностям родительский контроль, защиту веб-камеры, а также двусторонний брандмауэр, фильтрующий не только входящий, но и исходящий трафик. А пакет Total Security (далее TS) имеет встроенную защиту для ноутбуков и программу для оптимизации операционной системы. Еще один продукт разработчика, Premium Security, представляет собой улучшенный TS с неограниченным VPN и кросс-платформенным менеджером паролей. Также отличным решением является пакет для семейного использования, позволяющий установить TS сразу на 15 устройств за умеренную плату.

• Простой и удобный интерфейс

• Не поддерживает шифрования данных

• Сильная фоновая загрузка системы

2. Kaspersky

Все продукты «Лаборатории Касперского» для Windows отлично справляются с нейтрализацией вредоносного ПО и при этом не сильно влияют на производительность системы. А в программу начального уровня встроена даже защита от Ransomware. По этому показателю его превосходит только Bitdefender, бесплатная версия которого предлагает несколько больше возможностей.

В пакете среднего уровня от «Лаборатории Касперского» есть функции для безопасности браузера, защиты ноутбуков от кражи и веб-камеры. Кроме того, он может предложить VPN (правда, с ограничениями трафика), который автоматически включается при подключении к Wi-Fi. Также в этот пакет включено ПО для Android, iOS для мобильных устройств и macOS для компьютеров. Антивирусный пакет класса премиум от Kaspersky включает возможность резервного копирования, шифрование, программу-шредер, родительский контроль и менеджер паролей без каких-либо ограничений.

Авторы нескольких западных обзоров на крупных сайтах пишут, что это лучшее антивирусное ПО, которое можно купить сегодня. Например, автор данного обзора указал, что во всех (!) тестах антивирус Касперского показал 100%-ю надежность, то есть заблокировал абсолютно все угрозы. Однако большинство западных специалистов по кибербезопасности занизили оценку российским разработчикам, сославшись на подозрения в сотрудничестве с российскими спецслужбами. И хотя разговоры об этом велись уже давно, никаких реальных доказательств политической ангажированности корпорации Kaspersky западные специалисты предоставить так и не смогли.

3. Norton

Любой продукт Norton обеспечивает отличную защиту от вредоносного ПО, а серьезная нагрузка на производительность системы с последними версиями стала намного меньше. Лучшим пакетом от разработчика является 360 Deluxe, обладающий оптимальным набором функций.

В нем есть менеджер паролей, который работает на всех основных платформах, безлимитный VPN-сервис, контроль за личными данными при работе в интернете, а также до 50 ГБ места в «облаке». Другие пакеты предоставляют еще больше места для хранения данных и расширяют количество подключаемых устройств.

Если вам нужна полная конфиденциальность, Norton предлагает решение и на этот случай. Пакеты LifeLock различаются по уровню обслуживания и при этом предлагают еще больший объем онлайн-хранилища. Цены на них, конечно, выше, но всё равно каждый из этих пакетов стоит меньше, чем если покупать приложение по защите конфиденциальности, менеджер паролей, место в «облаке» и антивирусное ПО по отдельности.

В отличие от ряда других разработчиков антивирусного ПО, Norton не предлагает программ для безвозвратного уничтожения данных (шредеров), шифрования или конфиденциального веб-браузера ни в одном из своих пакетов. Однако другие распространенные услуги для защиты компьютеров и отдельных файлов включены, по крайней мере, в один из пакетов.

4. McAfee

Разработчики McAfee смогли значительно улучшить показатели обнаружения вредоносного ПО, но этого пока не хватает, чтобы войти в топ-3. Тем не менее антивирусный пакет McAfee начального уровня — выгодная покупка: это ПО рассчитано сразу на 10 устройств, причем антивирус может работать на любой распространенной ОС. При этом пакет поставляется с программой-шредером и двусторонним брандмауэром. 

Однако, чтобы получить, например, возможности для родительского контроля или менеджер паролей, придется выбрать один из более дорогих пакетов. Плюс здесь только в том, что они нередко уже предустановлены на некоторых новых ПК. Эти пакеты также включают защиту конфиденциальности. Но их минус в том, что они не могут предложить защиту веб-браузера, которая включена в антивирусные решения премиум-класса от других разработчиков.

Первое место по функциональности среди пакетов этого разработчика занимает Ultimate, добавляющий неограниченный VPN-сервис, и это серьезное преимущество даже в сравнении с продуктами первой тройки. Геймеры же могут рассмотреть пакет Gamer Security, предлагающий достаточно надежную защиту для одного ПК.

• Сильная загрузка системы при сканировании

• Отсутствие защиты браузера

5. Avast

Одно из самых известных бесплатных антивирусных приложений продолжает оставаться таковым, поддерживая и ряд платных функций, если пользователю нужно, например, поставить программу на несколько устройств или обеспечить дополнительную защиту.

Авторы обзоров отмечают лучшую среди конкурентов функцию интеллектуального сканирования группы пакетов Avast One. Когда вы запускаете Avast One впервые, он предлагает провести такую проверку. Интеллектуальное сканирование сочетает проверку на предмет наличия в системе вредоносного ПО с мониторингом других проблем. Это, например, замеченные средства отслеживания браузера (трекеры) или большое количество временных файлов в системе. Идея здесь в том, чтобы очистить компьютер и обеспечить его стабильную работу, а не просто сканировать на наличие вредоносных программ. И реализовано это у Avast лучше, чем у конкурентов, поскольку пакеты других разработчиков поставляются с утилитами для очистки и обслуживания ПК, которые чаще всего требуют активации.

Ключевые функции безопасности Avast включают программу отслеживания изменений в файлах на предмет подозрительного поведения, защиту от программ-вымогателей, веб-экран для обеспечения безопасности в интернете. Также здесь простой в использовании брандмауэр, позволяющий блокировать доступ в интернет для каждого приложения, и есть защита веб-камеры.

Платный пакет Individual позволяет установить антивирусник на пять устройств, а пакет Family предоставляет возможность создать сразу шесть учетных записей с покрытием 30 устройств. Если вам не подходит платный пакет, у «Аваста» есть Essential, который включает в себя множество бесплатных функций, в том числе еженедельные 5 ГБ для использования VPN. Но в бесплатной версии недоступны такие возможности, как защита конфиденциальности личных данных и веб-камеры, а также некоторые функции оптимизации (очистка диска, обновление драйверов).

• Интеллектуальное сканирование требует слишком большого внимания от пользователя из-за множества функций

6. Avira

Avira — тоже неплохое антивирусное решение с рядом важных бесплатных функций. В бесплатном пакете вы найдете VPN, брандмауэр и генератор паролей. И это при том, что большинство других разработчиков заставят вас доплачивать за некоторые или за каждую из этих возможностей. Кроме того, антивирус имеет расширенную защиту от программ-вымогателей, полную веб-защиту для безопасных покупок в интернете, а также защиту электронной почты. Еще у Avira есть функция автоматического обновления и менеджер паролей.

Что выгодно отличает «Авиру» от других антивирусов, так это инструменты оптимизации системы. Например, вы можете программно ускорить загрузку вашей системы или сконцентрировать системные ресурсы на выполнении одной ресурсоемкой задачи.

Что касается главной функции, антивирусной защиты, то, по оценке независимых тестовых лабораторий, таких как AV-Test и AV-Comparatives, Avira успешно блокирует 99,2% киберугроз. Поэтому антивирусное ПО данного разработчика оценивается как сбалансированный инструмент безопасности с точки зрения сочетания функций защиты от вредоносных программ и производительности. А помимо неплохих результатов тестирования, Avira также предлагает выгодное соотношение цены и качества.

Антивирус совместим с устройствами Windows, macOS, Android и iOS и является одним из наиболее удобных для пользователей. Однако для macOS доступны не все функции — защитой электронной почты и сканированием загрузок пока могут пользоваться только обладатели ОС Windows.

7. Windows Defender

Встроенное антивирусное программное обеспечение от Microsoft уже несколько лет подряд составляет серьезную конкуренцию даже топовым антивирусным пакетам, демонстрируя впечатляющие показатели обнаружения и блокирования вредоносных программ. И хотя Защитник Windows, также известный как Microsoft Defender Antivirus, не побеждает разработчиков первой тройки (Kaspersky, Bitdefender и Norton) в лабораторных тестах по защите от вредоносного ПО, он уже опережает в этих тестах бесплатные версии Avast, Avira, AVG и даже многие платные антивирусные продукты.

Конечно, много дополнительных функций с самим Защитником Windows вы не получите, но дело в том, что в Windows 10 уже есть родительский контроль, игровой режим и встроенная защита для собственных браузеров Microsoft: Edge и Internet Explorer. Встроенного VPN, правда, тут нет, но зато вас не будут беспокоить всплывающие окна с попытками продать вам платный пакет от разработчика.

Microsoft Defender Antivirus — одно из лучших решений для простых пользователей Windows, которым не нужны функции продвинутой защиты, необходимые, например, для юридических лиц или специалистов. А его главные недостатки заключаются в сложности освоения планировщика сканирования и, главное, в отсутствии защиты для веб-браузеров, кроме Edge или Internet Explorer, которыми мало кто пользуется. Также здесь нет автономного менеджера паролей и уничтожителя файлов.

• На Windows 10 и Win 8 установлен по умолчанию

• Хорошая защита от вредоносных программ

Минусы

• Cложно планировать сканирование

• Мало функций, а некоторые возможности доступны только с продуктами Microsoft

8. Trend Micro

Trend Micro предлагает хорошую защиту, но его механизм обнаружения вредоносных программ плохо оптимизирован, поэтому создает большую нагрузку на систему во время сканирования. Кроме того, этот антивирус имеет значительное количество ложных срабатываний.

Программа начального уровня Antivirus+ Security имеет все базовые инструменты, но не имеет функций для веб-безопасности: родительский контроль, оптимизация системы и средство для уничтожения файлов входят в пакет Internet Security, относящийся уже к среднему уровню. Пакет Maximum Security добавляет менеджер паролей, конфиденциальность браузера и шифрование файлов, а новый Premium Security — VPN и безопасность личных данных.

Тем не менее ни один из пакетов Trend Micro не включает двусторонний брандмауэр, а также защиту веб-камеры, стандартную для пакетов среднего уровня других разработчиков. Пакет премиум-класса также не имеет опций для резервного копирования, который лучшие бренды добавляют в качестве приятного бонуса в свои флагманские продукты.

9. TotalAV

TotalAV является еще одним достойным внимания антивирусным пакетом, который также имеет полезные функции безопасности, предоставляемые бесплатно. Так, например, все пользователи бесплатно получают защиту от фишинга. При этом если вы приобретете подписку, ваша безопасность увеличится за счет функции защиты в реальном времени и защиты от программ-вымогателей. 

Также платные пакеты включают сканирование файлов «на лету», очистку диска и ряд инструментов оптимизации системы, которые помогут, например, освободить место на жестком диске и сделать запуск более эффективным. Кроме того, TotalAV предлагает VPN с неограниченным объемом данных, менеджер паролей и блокировщик рекламы для обеспечения комфортного серфинга в интернете.

Стоит также отметить, что независимые тестовые лаборатории показывают: этот антивирус успешно блокирует 97% атак «нулевого дня» и 100% атак вредоносных программ месячной давности. То есть TotalAV не совсем хорошо справляется с новейшими угрозами, зато идеален против всех остальных. А поскольку у любого пакета TotalAV есть поддержка устройств Windows, macOS, Android и iOS, вы можете защитить любой компьютер, ноутбук или гаджет. Интерфейс мобильных приложений тоже хорошо организован и прост, как и сам процесс установки.

В целом, TotalAV — простое, но довольно мощное антивирусное решение. Он удалит большинство цифровых вредителей, пойманных во время веб-серфинга, но при этом не перегрузит ваше устройство. Этот антивирус можно смело рекомендовать всем, кому нужно простое решение для обеспечения безопасности прежде всего в автономном режиме. Однако тем, кому необходимо противостоять передовым угрозам, лучше выбрать один из продуктов выше по рейтингу.

10. AVG

AVG использует тот же механизм обнаружения вредоносных программ, что и Avast (обе группы приложений разрабатываются одной корпорацией), но при этом гораздо меньше нагружает систему. А причина, по которой AVG стоит в рейтинге гораздо ниже «Аваста» в том, что он имеет куда меньше полезных дополнительных функций, чем Avast — по крайней мере, в бесплатной версии.

Тем не менее этот антивирусный продукт отличается широкими возможностями настройки, имеет уничтожитель файлов и возможности для оптимизации системы. Плохая новость в том, что, как и Avast Free Antivirus, AVG AntiVirus Free назойливо предлагает вам перейти на платные антивирусные пакеты. Но даже в платной версии AVG, как и Avast (оба, напомним, используют одни базы данных и алгоритмы обнаружения вредоносного софта), пропускает некоторые угрозы.

И потому, с учетом урезанной функциональности, авторы большинства обзоров справедливо поставили это антивирусное ПО в конец своих рейтингов. Ведь нет никаких убедительных причин выбрать AVG AntiVirus Free вместо встроенного и значительно лучше блокирующего угрозы Microsoft Defender, либо предлагающих больше возможностей Trend Micro, TotalAV и Avira.

Bitdefender Antivirus Plus delivers excellent antivirus protection for Windows 10 PCs, regularly being the top performer with independent antivirus testing labs. One of those big-name labs, AV-Comparatives, crowned Bitdefender as one of the ‘Outstanding Products of 2021’ in its year-end summary, and Bitdefender performed flawlessly in the lab’s latest real-world protection test, blocking 100% of threats with few false positives to boot.

As well as this superb core antivirus engine, you get very capable anti-ransomware protection, and Bitdefender Antivirus Plus is one of the best products out there when it comes to blocking malicious websites on Windows machines.

The package delivers a range of other features, including Safepay, a well-designed and fully secure browser with which you can carry out sensitive tasks like online banking – this is definitely a highlight of the suite. Plus there’s a password manager, vulnerability scanner, and a Wi-Fi Security Advisor which evaluates any wireless networks you use to pick up on any potential security issues. Oh, and a VPN is in here too, albeit a very limited service giving you just 200MB of daily traffic.

While it’s easy to use for beginners, Antivirus Plus also offers some nifty more in-depth settings, like being able to set up profiles to, for example, keep any background activity to a minimum when you’re on a laptop using battery power. In the past, Bitdefender has been a bit more resource-hungry than some antivirus apps, but these days, it runs with far less impact on system performance and does better than most rival products in this respect.

You get very capable anti-ransomware protection, albeit with a minor caveat. Namely that in our testing, we found that Bitdefender didn’t quarantine our simulated ransomware threat (though it did block this malware every time we ran it – so this made no practical difference to the defenses provided, and we remained perfectly safe).

But to sum up, this is a well-featured package with some very smart touches and, the icing on this malware-busting cake, is that it’s good value for money — particularly considering everything you get here.

For those who want more features still, there’s also a top-end package, Bitdefender Total Security, which is worth considering, adding functionality like PC maintenance tools (and bonus mobile apps that could come in handy). With discounts, this flagship product can work out as not much more expensive than Bitdefender Antivirus Plus – at least for the initial year of the subscription – so could be well worth a shot for some users.

Norton AntiVirus Plus gives you coverage for just one PC, but if you only have a single Windows 10 computer that needs protecting from online threats, then it’s a sterling option for many good reasons.

The core malware protection provided is among the best in the business, the slight caveat being that Norton does tend to produce a few more false positive detections than most in independent lab testing. It’s also worth bearing in mind that this package offers a novel touch for more tech-savvy types in the form of the Norton Insight tool, which gauges the reputation of any given file on your system helps pinpoint more obscure threats.

Furthermore, on the web, Norton AntiVirus Plus does a great job of blocking malicious sites, and you also get the Norton Smart Firewall that keeps you well-informed on any potential risks to your computer.

Bonus features include a password manager, useful PC maintenance and performance monitoring utilities, and a backup tool, which is an unusual inclusion for an entry-level antivirus. While the latter is limited to 2GB of online space, it can also be configured to back up files locally – and it’s commendably user-friendly.

Norton’s interface might be a little odd and quirky, and we found it was a bit heavier in terms of system resource usage than the average antivirus app. That said, other tests (by the independent labs) peg it as a middling performer in the latter department, and Norton AntiVirus Plus undoubtedly remains a great choice for those who simply want to protect their own Windows 10 PC and no other devices.

Avast One is the firm’s new(ish) all-in-one security package which delivers antivirus protection and a host of other benefits besides, including a built-in VPN service.

The Avast One Individual package covers five devices, and its antivirus engine is well-rated by the independent test labs, scoring highly in recent history and placing among the top-ranked vendors. On top of that, you get an added layer of solid ransomware defenses, alongside excellent URL blocking skills to protect your web browsing.

This internet security suite isn’t just about antivirus, though, as it sports a bunch of other security extras including that VPN. It offers unlimited data and is suitably robust (powered by HideMyAss!), even if it isn’t the fastest one out there — Bitdefender’s integrated effort is far quicker, for example, albeit it a much more limited service.

Avast One also has a software updater feature which is better implemented than most, along with webcam protection, plus a bunch of privacy tools including a Sensitive Data Shield that automatically finds files that might contain sensitive data, like names, addresses, or financial details, and stops anyone else using your device from accessing them. Furthermore, some PC maintenance tools are present, including a disk cleaner and performance booster (although the latter, and another module, the driver updater, need to be used with some caution, as we discuss in our full Avast One review).

Another positive facet here is that Avast One takes up very little in the way of resources, and indeed we found that it didn’t slow down our test PC one bit when reviewing the package (your mileage could vary, of course). It doesn’t hurt that Avast has really worked hard to polish the interface and make this product easy to use, too.

Overall, this is a well-rounded package, and while it’s not top of the field in some areas, Avast One is consistently strong enough across the board, providing a lot of features to make it a compelling buy. Also worth remembering is that if you want more devices covered than five, you get a beefy 30 pieces of hardware on the higher-tier Family plan.

Trend Micro’s entry-level Windows 10 antivirus is another product which is designed for a single PC. Indeed, this baseline package is Windows-only, although there’s a separate app for Macs – and coverage for multiple devices via a flagship security suite, which we’ll come back to.

One of the major strengths of Trend Micro Antivirus Plus is that it puts an emphasis on making things easy for novice PC users, avoiding jargon, for example, and explaining choices and settings in plain language. But while this is an easy to use suite, and a great choice for the less tech-savvy, more demanding users will probably want to steer away due to the lack of configurability and options available.

This product also benefits from a very good quality antivirus engine, with Trend Micro being one of the top performers going by the rankings from the independent test labs. That said, one slight weakness is more false positives, or errant detections of malware, occurring compared to the average antivirus.

Antivirus+ also delivers strong ransomware protection, with a dedicated Folder Shield that could help block even undiscovered ransomware trying to compromise your PC.

While Trend Micro Antivirus+ is rather heavy in terms of resource usage compared to rivals, overall it’s a high-quality antivirus package. True, it’s not loaded with features, but you do get impressive URL filtering and anti-phishing tech, plus a Pay Guard feature to keep your online banking secure.

Those wanting more features and coverage across multiple devices (or different platforms) should look at Trend Micro Maximum Security, which supports up to 10 devices (Windows, Mac, Android or iOS), adding a secure file vault and password manager into the mix.

Microsoft Defender is the built-in antivirus that comes with Windows 10 to be used as a default option if you don’t want to take the trouble to search for one yourself. While you might assume that it isn’t very high-quality as a result – and indeed Windows Defender, as it used to be known, was a questionable offering in the not-so-distant past – this antivirus is now a solid offering.

Indeed, it’s better than some of the big-name competition out there, and Microsoft Defender scored top marks in a recent evaluation by AV-Test, as well as being one of the middling performers in testing done by the other major independent lab AV-Comparatives.

Its defenses are robust enough, then, but bear in mind that what you don’t get is much in the way of features. Microsoft Defender is about the antivirus essentials only, complete with just a few extras: a basic firewall, URL blocking to keep you safer online, and some limited parental control options (which are Edge-only on the browser front).

If you want more than just the basics, and if you need top-notch protection, then you’ll be better served considering one of the above products – but that said, Microsoft Defender represents a reliable enough option now, and you can trust it to be true to its name and defend your PC. Defender offers the advantage of being free, and a no-hassle solution, already being there, on-tap, in Windows 10.

Editor’s note: Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows used to appear on this list. Considering the current climate however, we’ve taken the decision to remove the provider. Although much of the company’s core processes are now take place in Switzerland, the fact that its headquarters remain in Moscow and there have been previous allegations around government coercion, it feels prudent to use the provider with caution. And, when there are so many other excellent providers to choose from, it’s impossible to whole-heartedly recommend Kaspersky at this time.

Is Microsoft Defender good enough to secure Windows 10?

Windows used to suffer from security vulnerabilities and malware attacks that only third-party antivirus packages could deal with. However, over the years, Microsoft has made a real effort to improve the security of Windows, not least with the inclusion of Microsoft Defender by default in Windows 10.

That said, in the past, Defender (formerly known as Windows Defender) has been regarded as a pretty poor solution—or ‘better than nothing’. That isn’t true anymore, though: in fact, Defender now holds its own. One independent antivirus testing lab, AV-Test, rates Microsoft’s solution highly.

Defender has the added advantage of being a hassle-free solution that’s already integrated with Windows 10. So, if you want basic protection that works, Defender is all you need. Plus, it’s free!

Third-party antivirus apps do come with additional security and privacy features, however, that make them attractive choices in their own right.

Your system is secure with Defender, but if you want added peace of mind and extra functionality (like top-rated antivirus engines and extra anti-ransomware tools), Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, and our other top Windows 10 picks, are well worth checking out.

Should I get a free or premium antivirus?

If you’re simply looking to protect your PC from viruses, trojans, and worms, then free Windows 10 antivirus from any reputable provider will keep you protected.

The difference with paid-for services is that they come with extra features that can shore up your security and even tune up your PC.

For example, a premium antivirus might come with ransomware protection and the ability to ensure that certain files or folders cannot be changed by third-party programs.

Some of our top picks even include a VPN, which will allow you to go about your day-to-day browsing with improved anonymity, and tools that can put a stop to tracking cookies that’d otherwise follow you around the web.

There are Windows antivirus packages that can tune up your PC, too, by removing junk files from temporary or cache folders, and fix registry issues that might be slowing your machine to a crawl.

Why Isn’t Kaspersky Here?

Kaspersky Free is the free anchor for the Kaspersky line; the not-free Kaspersky Standard, Plus, and Premium all build on the same antivirus engine. Kaspersky’s antivirus prowess generally awes the independent testing labs, who routinely assign it perfect or near-perfect ratings. Unfortunately, we can’t recommend it anymore. Here’s why.

For years, Kaspersky has faced accusations and censure based on its Russian origins, though none of the accusations have come backed by hard evidence of malicious behavior. We at PCMag always focused on the capabilities of the products, not on the brouhaha around the company. However, the current war in Ukraine has raised the stakes. Governments and third parties are cutting ties with Kaspersky. The FCC labeled Kaspersky a national security risk.

After consideration, we can no longer recommend you purchase Kaspersky security products or even use them for free. We’ve left the reviews in place, with a warning, since they provide useful information. But at least for now, we’re removing Kaspersky products from our «Best for» lists.

Free Antivirus vs. Paid Antivirus

If free antivirus tools are so good at protecting internet security, why should anybody pay? For one thing, many of these products are free only for noncommercial use. If you want to protect your business, you must pony up for the paid edition. You should probably consider upgrading to a full security suite at that point. After all, it’s your business’s security on the line.

Even for personal use, most for-pay antivirus tools offer more than their free counterparts—sometimes a lot more. For example, the paid editions of Adaware and ZoneAlarm add protection against malicious and fraudulent websites the free versions lack. And Panda reserves quite a few features for paying customers: firewall protection, application control, cross-platform support, and detection of insecure Wi-Fi connections.

In addition, many companies don’t offer full-scale tech support for users of their free editions. The first time you need extra help digging a particularly stubborn piece of malware out of your system, you might regret the lack of support.

Independent Antivirus Lab Test Results

Around the world, researchers at independent antivirus testing labs spend their days putting antivirus tools to the test. Some of these labs regularly release public reports on their findings. We follow four such labs closely: AV-Comparatives, MRG-Effitas, SE Labs, and AV-Test Institute.

Security companies typically pay for the privilege of being included in testing. In return, the labs supply detailed reports that can help improve their products. The number of labs that include a particular vendor serves as a measure of significance. In each case, the lab considered the product important enough to test, and the vendor felt the price was worthwhile. The labs don’t necessarily test a vendor’s free product, but most vendors pack full protection into the free product, enhancing premium versions with additional features.

The Best Free Malware Protection

In addition to carefully perusing results from the independent labs, we also run our own hands-on malware protection test. We expose each antivirus to a collection of malware samples, including a variety of different malware types, and note its reaction. Typically, the antivirus will wipe out most of the samples on sight and detect some of the remaining ones when we try to launch them. We derive a malware blocking score from 0 to 10 points based on how thoroughly the antivirus protects the test system from these samples.

Since we use the same samples month after month, the malware-blocking test doesn’t measure a product’s ability to detect brand-new threats. In a separate test, we attempt to download malware from 100 very new malicious URLs supplied by London-based testing lab MRG-Effitas, typically less than a few days old. We note whether the antivirus blocked all access to the URL, wiped out the malicious payload during download, or did nothing.

Useful Features

Just about every antivirus product scans files on access to make sure malware can’t launch, and it also scans the entire system on demand, or on a schedule you set. Once cleaning and scheduling is done, blocking all access to malware-hosting URLs is another good way to avoid trouble. Many products extend that protection to also steer users away from fraudulent websites, phishing sites that try to steal login credentials for financial sites and other sensitive sites. A few rate links in search results, flagging any dangerous or iffy ones.

Behavior-based detection, a feature of some antivirus products, is a two-edged sword. On the one hand, it can detect malware that’s never been seen before. On the other hand, if it’s not done right, it can baffle the user with messages about perfectly legitimate programs.

Any antivirus should eliminate spyware along with other types of malware, but some products include features designed specifically for spyware protection. Features like encryption to protect your sensitive data and webcam control to prevent remote peeping typically show up in commercial products, not free ones. But some free products include features like a simple on-screen keyboard to foil keyloggers.

One easy way to keep your PC protected is to install all security updates, both for Windows and for browsers and other popular applications. Windows 11 makes it easier than ever to stay up to date, but there are plenty of security holes in older Windows versions, in popular apps, and in add-ons. Scanning for vulnerabilities in the form of missing updates is a feature most often found in commercial antivirus products, but it does turn up in some free ones. In the list below you can see which products include these useful features.

What’s Not Here?

Numerous free utilities devoted entirely to ransomware protection have come on the scene in the last few years. Alas, many of those have fallen by the wayside, among them Bitdefender Anti-Ransomware, Cybereason RansomFree, CyberSight RansomStopper, and Heilig Defense RansomOff. In any case, these are useful companion products, but they don’t do the job of a full-scale antivirus utility.

There are also numerous free antivirus utilities that work solely to clean up existing malware infestations. You bring out these cleanup-only tools when you have a nasty malware problem. When the malware’s gone, they have no further use since they offer no ongoing protection. Our favorite in this category is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and it’s one you should try if you’ve got a malware problem. But since they’re free, you can keep trying others if the first one doesn’t do the job. When the scare is over, you’ll need a full-blown antivirus for ongoing protection.

It appears in lab reports from all four labs we follow with almost universally perfect scores, and it includes many suite-level features.
