Right on schedule, Microsoft today released new builds of Windows Server 2019 and the Windows 10 SDK Preview. Typically, they arrive on Tuesdays, with Server showing up every two weeks and the SDK showing up every week after a new Windows 10 client build.

The build number for both is 17709, which is slightly odd given that the latest Windows 10 build is 17711. Here’s what’s new in Windows Server 2019 build 17709:

Containers

Group Managed Service Accounts We’ve improved the scalability and reliability of containers that use group managed service accounts (gMSA) to access network resources. You should see fewer authentication errors when using a single gMSA with multiple container instances. Additionally, you no longer need to set the container’s host name to be the same as the gMSA. We also fixed a bug that prevented you from using gMSAs with Hyper-V isolated containers.

New base image: Windows

We’re adding a new base image to the Windows Server container collection. In addition to NanoServer and WindowsServerCore container images, the new Windows image is now available. This image carries even more components than its NanoServer and ServerCore siblings, meaning it can support applications that have additional API dependencies. To learn more and get started, go to https://aka.ms/windowscontainer.

There are also some known issues to be aware of:

  • [NEW] If a system is upgraded from preview release build 17692 to a more recent preview release, System Insights encounters errors when parsing or visualizing the prediction results. To resolve this issue, follow the instructions on System Insights known issues, or clean install a newer preview release.
  • [NEW] Get-HgsAttestationBaselinePolicy, PowerShell cmdlet that generates an attestation baseline policy, fails with an error: “Failed to retrieve TPM information.”
  • [NEW] On a recent preview release of Server Core, the Advanced Query Syntax (AQS) parser may fail if the default language and locale are changed to something other than US English. If the AQS parser is not working, search functionality in Exchange does not work.
  • Creating or modifying environment variables by using setx on a system running NanoServer container fails. On an affected system, setx requires a specific path in the registry, HKCU\Environment\, to exist by default. You can work around this issue by changing where the variable is stored in the registry, or you can add the expected registry path before executing setx commands. To specify that the variable be set for system-wide use in HKLM rather than in HKCU, the default, add the /M switch to a setx command. To instead add the expected registry path, run reg add HKCU\Environment before executing setx commands.
  • The Virtual Machine Management Service (VMMS) may experience an error, APPLICATION_FAULT_INVALID_POINTER_READ, in Cluster Manager.
  • Editing or creating policies for AppLocker can cause the MMC snap-in to crash when generated rules for a packaged app.

As usual, Microsoft would appreciate feedback on the build. To leave feedback, you’ll have to use the Feedback Hub on a Windows 10 client machine and include the Server build number.

And then there’s the new SDK Preview, the main new features of which include MSIX support and MC.exe. There’s still no blog post for it yet, so there might be some other minor new stuff included.

To download Windows Server 2019 build 17709, you can find it here. For Windows 10 SDK Preview build 17709, you can find that here.

Microsoft has released build 17666 previews for the Windows 10 SDK and Windows Server. The Redstone 5 releases come with a number of bugs and improvements, which we’ll get into now.

Firstly, the preview SDK contains bug fixes and changes to API surface area. A number of changes have come to the C/C++ ETW code generation of mc.exe, with the -mof parameter becoming depreciated. If the -mof generator isn’t used, the C/C++ header is compatible with kernel mode and user mode, regardless of the use of -km or -um.

It does so by using the _ETW_KM_ macro to determine which mode it’s being compiled for and then pulling it the appropriate APIs. Other changes include:

  • “The generated header now supports several customization macros. For example, you can set the MCGEN_EVENTWRITETRANSFER macro if you need the generated macros to call something other than EventWriteTransfer.
  • The manifest supports new attributes.
    • Event ‘name’: non-localized event name.
    • Event ‘attributes’: additional key-value metadata for an event such as filename, line number, component name, function name.
    • Event ‘tags’: 28-bit value with user-defined semantics (per-event).
    • Field ‘tags’: 28-bit value with user-defined semantics (per-field – can be applied to ‘data’or ‘struct’ elements).
  • You can now define ‘provider traits’ in the manifest (e.g. provider group). If provider traits are used in the manifest, the EventRegister[ProviderName] macro will automatically register them.
  • MC will now report an error if a localized message file is missing a string. (Previously MC would silently generate a corrupt message resource.)
  • MC can now generate Unicode (utf-8 or utf-16) output with the ‘-cp utf-8′ or ‘-cp utf-16′ parameters.”

Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn’t included Windows.System.SystemManagement in this build. You’ll have to use a previous Windows IoT extension SDK to gain access a number of APIs. The full list is available here.

The Windows Server 2019 build is available primarily for users to test and give feedback to Microsoft. However, it does include some new features, such as performance history for Storage Space Direct and an option to delimit volume allocation.

The ISO is available in 18 languages, with a VHDX format in English only. The build requires activation keys during setup, which you can find on the Windows blog. They allow for unlimited activations.

Again, there are some known issues, which is to be expected at this point. The size of a file according to NTFS and a stream control block can be different to what Cache Manager assumes. This can cause bug checks if a read operation is out of bounds.

You should also be aware of the following:

  • Inplace OS upgrade: Domain Controllers. During an in-place OS upgrade, Active Directory (AD) Domain Controllers (DC) might not be upgraded correctly. So, back up any AD DCs before performing an in-place OS upgrade.
  • Editing or creating policies for AppLocker can cause the MMC snap-in to crash when generated rules for a packaged app.
  • After upgrading the operating system, the AppX database may have corrupted entries, which causes problems for components that use those entries.”

You can grab the ISO for Windows Server 2019 here, and the download for the SDK preview here. Naturally, you have to be a part of the Insider program to use them.

На прошлой неделе компания Microsoft выпустила новую инсайдерскую сборку Windows 10 Redstone 5 Build 17723 на быстром канале обновлений. Теперь же с тем же номером сборки выпущены предварительные сборки Windows Server 2019 и SDK Insider Preview.

Microsoft.

The Windows Insider team has just announced the release of Windows Server 2019 Insider build 17666, which succeeds to the preview build 17650 released last month.

As a reminder, Windows Server 2019 will be the next release in Microsoft’s new Next Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC), and this version of the server OS should be generally available in the second half of 2018. Following the general availability of Windows Server version 1803 last week, Windows Insiders can also download today a new build of the next Windows Server Semi-Annual Channel release, which should be available later this year.

These latest builds of the server OS comes with a couple of new features, including performance history for Storage Spaces Direct as well as new cmdlets for simplifying the management of volumes with delimited allocation. ISO and VHDX files are available from the Windows Server Insider Preview download page, though please note that this build of Windows Server 2019 as well as all future preview builds will require will activation keys which you can find on the blog post.

In addition to these new Windows Server preview builds, Microsoft also released today the Windows 10 SDK preview build 17666, which you can download here. Microsoft has yet to publish a blog post to announce what’s new in this release, so in the meantime you may want to keep an eye on the Windows Insider blog for more details.
