PCI USB driver for W98

PCI USB driver for W98

(OP)

Anyone know where I can download a «PCI Universal Serial Bus» driver for windows 98?

Having just installed a USB card to a 5 year old computer which previously had no USB the system is not detecting any devices attached via the USB ports, and in the devices list the PCI USB bus shows up with the yellow question mark, because there is no driver.  I know Microsoft will not supply one for W98.  Anyone know where there is one?

Universal USB driver for Win98 — универсальный драйвер, который позволяет вам полноценно использовать USB под Windows 98 всех редакций. Как известно, Windows 98 требует установки драйверов для любого подключаемого к USB устройства, даже если само устройство поддерживает Plug’n’Play.

Hi What version of Win 95 are you using? Version C has support for USB earlier versions did not.

Thank you for replying. I have version Windows version B.
Can I get drivers for the pci usb or what do I have to do?

Sorry Win 95 B does not support USB. In fact many USB peripheral makers won’t even support devices on a Win 95 C operating system. I don’t really know of anyone off hand that has heard of a third party device or software that could help. You might try the microsoft support site. It has been my experience to simply upgrade to 98 or newer which guarantees support.

I will somewhat disagree with tiberiuscan as Win 95 «B» which is OSR2 DOES SUPPORT USB. However, it is iffy if you can get it to woek. I have in the past.

If you have version 4.00.950B (4.00.1111) then USB may work.

If the CD you have says Windows 95 with USB support, then the USB drivers are on the cd, which will be located:

USBSUPP.EXE — can be installed from the D:\Other\USB folder (where D is the driver letter of your CD-ROM drive).

When you install the USB Supplement you should be aware of a minor bug in Microsoft’s installation process, documented in their support article Q192193. After rebooting the computer (prompted at the end of the Supplement install process) your PC may detect a USB device connected to the computer, and prompt for the drivers.

By default Windows will try to search your CD-ROM for the drivers (where they won’t be found), however they are already installed on your PC. Simply change the driver path of the «Detect New Hardware» dialogue to your \windows\system directory (normally on drive C).

    The files required are openhci.sys, uhcd.sys, usbcamd.sys,usbd.sys and usbhub.sys.

If not you will need the USB patch, but read this first:

Hi Murf I was aware of the existance of a patch but even microsoft says they can’t guarantee it will work. I have had mixed results myself. It can work it just may not. The fact that Moe said Win 95 discovered the USB device certainly indicates it’s possible.
But as I also pointed out not all USB device maunufactures will guarantee they will work even with Win 95 C.
Still if the patch works great.
As you saud yourself Murf it’s iffy.

The following is from a Win 95 OSR2 support site.

    14 Mar 98 Does OSR2 support USB?

No. There is an update, which can only be installed on top of OSR2, called «usbsupp.exe.» This update is also known as «OSR2.1.» It has been released to OEMs, and is also available in MSDN.

This patch also contains the «Windows Driver Model» (WDM) update, which is necessary, so I’m told, for support of all features of the new AGP graphics adapters (only supported by the new LX chipset (Pentium II). Some of the newest AGP cards will not work properly unless this patch is installed.

This update will only install on OSR2.

There are two versions of this patch, 4.03.1212, and 4.03.1214. The latter version fixes some incompatibilities present in the former version. If you have the older version and it has caused problems, uninstall it and install the newer version. The older version is in the Other\Updates directory of the OSR2.1 CDROM, and the newer version is in the Other\Updates directory of the OSR2.5 CDROM.

Not only «IFFY» but IMPOSSIBLE if you have a VIA chip (earlier one). I do and finally went to a USB card with a lucent chip. Could not get to work under «98» either..a VIA problem they never solved….

Upgrade to «98» if you want USB support without a hassle….

I disagree with tiberiuscan as Win 95 «B» which is OSR2 DOES SUPPORT USB. I experienced Win 95 could support USB. The main console is you must have correct driver.
What version is your USB port? I did used USB version 1 with Win 95, is work. I have not try USB ver 2 with Win 95.

    Hi Moe265 et al,

I had great difficulty once persuading a UMAX USB scanner to work under Win95B and their tech support couldn’t figure out the problem.

I eventually found multiple versions of the USB supplement — including a v1216 (as well as the aforementioned 1212 and 1214). This v1216 alone fixed the problem — I remember emailing a copy of it back to Umax!

It took quite a bit of finding and so I kept it in case I ever needed it again. Well it’s lain unused there for some years now, but if you want a copy, private message me and I’ll dust it off and send it you! It’s 360k and if my memory serves me correctly, I installed it as an update to the already-installed older USB supplement. I’ve therefore still got a copy of v1212 too (940k).

    Best wishes and good luck,

    Andrew

    This thread is getting good, but a few version errors. This is the actual versions;

    win 95A = OSR 2.0 — No USB
    win 95B = OSR 2.1 — USB capable
win 95C = OSR 2.5 — USB and AGP Capable

I had it working with my Scanpaq SQ-9600 scanner before, on my B then when upgraded to C.

Right now I am trying to get a backup computer running with it again.

Thanks Murf, for the link to this thread from mine.

Here is a link to the usb supplement for win 95b. It is the same as the supplement for 95C.

Files in Win 95 USB Supplement 2.1 and 2.5

How to preintall the usb supplement

Which versions of Win 95 use the usb supplement

    Get The Supplement here

Get the update to the supplement here

These files are zipped and you will need to unzip them.

Now as for USB working with Via Chipsets. There was a ton of trouble with that in the early days. Using the latest Via Chipset drivers has fixed that for a long time now. Just make sure you get the latest 4 in 1 drivers. Win 32 bit o/s Via Drivers 95b and above but not longhorn or windows 2003/XP 64bit O/S

    Thanks JAL
That really looks like it covers the whole thing. I am not sure what chipset this MoBo has. I will have to look. I know it is a 200 Mhx and it is running a lot faster than my broke computer with a 400Mhx CPU with 98 SE! Pretty bad when the standby computer is faster than the main one, huh? Good old 95.
