    NVM for Windows

    NVM for Windows

A node.js version management utility for Windows written in Go

Manage multiple installations of node.js on a Windows computer. Similar (not identical) to nvm, but for Windows. This has always been a node version manager, not an io.js manager, so there is no back-support for io.js. However, node 4+ is supported. Remember when running nvm install or nvm use, you must have Windows administrative rights (to create symlinks). There are situations where the ability to switch between different versions of Node.js can be very useful. For example, if you want to test a module you’re developing with the latest bleeding edge version without uninstalling the stable version of node, this utility can help. Please note that any global npm modules you may have installed are not shared between the various versions of node.js you have installed. Additionally, some npm modules may not be supported in the version of node you’re using, so be aware of your environment as you work.

    Sourcetrail

    Sourcetrail

Free and open-source interactive source explorer

Sourcetrail is a free and open-source cross-platform source explorer that helps you get productive on unfamiliar source code. Building Sourcetrail requires several dependencies to be in place on your machine. However, our CMake based setup allows disabling indexing support for specific languages which reduces the number of dependencies to a minimum. Sourcetrail is an interactive source explorer that simplifies navigation in existing source code by indexing your code and gathering data about its structure. Sourcetrail then provides a simple interface consisting of three interactive views, each playing a key role in helping you obtain the information you need. Use the search field to quickly find and select indexed symbols in your source code. The autocompletion box will instantly provide an overview of all matching results throughout your codebase. Windows File Manager

The Windows File Manager lives again and runs as a native x86 and x64 desktop app on all currently supported version of Windows, including Windows 10. I welcome your thoughts, comments and suggestions. There are two primary versions of the source code in the master branch, original_plus tag, which refers to the source for WinFile as of Windows NT4 with minimal changes so that it compiles with Visual Studio and runs on current Windows. And current master, which contains my personal changes / additions to WinFile. If you are running Windows 10, you can download the app from the store. If you just want to download the WinFile application without worrying about compiling from the source code, we have a number of precompiled versions available. The Windows File manager was originally released with Windows 3.0 in the early 1990s.

Zipkin is a distributed tracing system. It helps gather timing data needed to troubleshoot latency problems in service architectures. Features include both the collection and lookup of this data. Some interesting data will be summarized for you, such as the percentage of time spent in a service, and whether or not operations failed. The Zipkin UI also presents a Dependency diagram showing how many traced requests went through each application. This can be helpful for identifying aggregate behavior including error paths or calls to deprecated services. Applications need to be “instrumented” to report trace data to Zipkin.

37 Open-source Free File Manager for Windows, Linux, macOS, and The Web

An open-source file manager is a software tool that allows users to manage their files and folders in a convenient and efficient way. Open-source file managers are built on the principles of transparency and collaboration, and their code is available to anyone who wants to use, modify, or improve it. In this draft, we will discuss the advantages and benefits of using an open-source file manager.

Advantages of Open Source File Manager

One of the main advantages of an open-source file manager is that it is free to use. Unlike proprietary file managers, which often require a license fee, open-source file managers are available at no cost. This makes them accessible to people who may not have the budget for commercial software.

Another advantage of open-source file managers is that they are highly customizable. Users can modify the code to suit their specific needs and preferences. This level of flexibility is not possible with proprietary software, which is often locked down and difficult to modify.

Benefits of Using Open Source File Manager

No Telemetry

One of the biggest benefits of using an open-source file manager is that it does not collect telemetry data. Telemetry is data that is collected from software users and sent back to the software developer. This data can include information about how the software is used, what features are being used, and even personal information. Open-source file managers do not collect this data, which means that users can be assured of their privacy and security.

Take Control of Your Data

Another benefit of using an open-source file manager is that it puts users in control of their data. Unlike proprietary file managers, which may be designed to lock users into a particular ecosystem or platform, open-source file managers allow users to manage their files and folders in a way that best suits their needs. Users can choose where their data is stored, how it is organized, and how it is accessed.

Extended Features

Open-source file managers often come with extended features that are not available in proprietary software. For example, some open-source file managers may include support for file compression, file synchronization, and even network file sharing. These features can be incredibly useful for users who need to manage large numbers of files or who need to collaborate with others on shared projects.

In conclusion, open-source file managers offer a range of advantages and benefits over proprietary software. From increased flexibility and customization to enhanced privacy and security, open-source file managers are an excellent choice for anyone who needs to manage their files and folders.

In this post, we offer you the best open-source graphica, terminal and web-based file amanger that you can download, install, and use for free.

10- tere

tere is a terminal file explorer. It is a faster alternative to using cd and ls to browse folders in your terminal. tere only really does one thing: it provides a TUI for efficiently navigating to a folder, and then prints the path to that folder when you exit. By configuring your shell to cd to the printed folder, you can move around in your filesystem very quickly.

Note that tere is not a file manager, it can only be used to browse folders, not to create, rename or delete them.

tere aims to be minimal and simple. It should be obvious how to use it. Navigating the file system should be efficient and require as few keystrokes as possible. A great source of inspiration for tere is the «type-ahead search» functionality found in many GUI file managers.

  Sigma File Manager

«Sigma File Manager» is a free, open-source, quickly evolving, modern file manager (explorer / finder) app for Windows and Linux.

Designed, developed, and maintained by Aleksey Hoffman | Twitter | Reddit | YouTube

Thanks to everyone who has been sharing this project with others!

Goal

Create the best existing intelligent file manager & productivity app that will significantly speed up your workflow, provide you with advanced tools, and keep your data safe.

Done 21 of 100 major features.

Features

The list of major features:

  • SMART GLOBAL SEARCH: feature allows you to find any file / directory on your computer in just a few seconds. It also implements a typo correction system, allowing you to find files even when the search query includes typos, wrong case, wrong word order, missing words, missing symbols, and missing file extension.

  • TABS: feature allows you to quickly switch between multiple directories with a click or a shortcut.

  • WORKSPACES: feature allows you to create separate workspaces with their own tabs and pre-defined actions, allowing you to quickly switch between them. Actions can perform different operations, e.g. open a website, run a script, open a file in a specific program, etc.

  • ADVANCED WIRELESS FILE SHARING: share a directory or stream any file to your local devices wirelessly without installing any apps. It works on any device with a modern web browser (smart TVs, mobile devices, laptops, virtual machines, etc).

  • ADDRESS BAR: lets you quickly navigate directories with your keyboard. It autocompletes file names and automatically opens directories as you type.

  • ITEM FILTER: allows you to filter out items from the list to quickly find the one you need. It supports advanced glob patterns and property prefixes.

  • ADVANCED FILE DOWNLOADER: stream / download any file from the internet just by dragging it (or its URL link) onto the app. It supports all file types, including videos from video services like Youtube and video streams (with or without auth tokens / URL timestamps).

  • SMART DRAG & DROP: allows you to easily download files from the internet, and provides a comfortable way of copying / moving local files.

  • SHORTCUTS: most actions within the app can be performed with shortcuts. You can also create global (system wide) shortcuts for some actions like opening / hiding the app or opening the app and instantly creating a new note.

  • CUSTOMIZABLE HOME PAGE BANNER: The home page of the app has a unique, recognizable feature — a customizable media background (banner). You can set a custom image / video or choose one of the built-in artworks (kindly provided to me by different artists) and personalize the app to your liking.

  • NOTES: Advanced note editor in this app allows you to create featureful notes and store them in one convenient, quickly accessible place.

  • DASHBOARD: Dashboard page provides quick access to pinned / protected / tagged items, and the timeline.

  • FILE PROTECTION: This feature allows you to protect any file / directory / note from being modified / renamed / moved / deleted.

  • INFO PANEL: displays useful information about currently selected file / directory and the file preview for media files: audio, video, images (including animated gifs, apng, webp, and many other formats).

  • ARCHIVER: built-in archiver allows you to compress files into archives and extract existing archives. It supports all most popular formats. See the list of formats on the «features» wiki page

  • AUTO UPDATES: the app updates itself automatically. It will let you decide if and when you want to download and install an update.

  • COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION: unlike closed-sourced apps, you participate in the development of this app (request features, vote which features should be prioritized, participate in discussions, modify code of the app yourself).

  • QUICK VIEW: allows you to quickly open selected files in a preview window, rather than an external program by pressing Space button. It supports images, videos, audio, PDF, most plain text formats.

  • INFUSIVE DESIGN: this app implements my custom, modern, beautiful, minimalistic, customizable, design system called «Infusive design».

  • WINDOW TRANSPARENCY EFFECTS: feature allows you to customize the app design and create literally infinite amount of custom, beautiful, modern UI designs by allowing you to beautifully infuse any image / video into every element of the app UI.

  • LOCALIZATION: the app interface can be displayed in any language. The languages can be edited, and new languages can be added by the community.

Info

Windows | Installation notes

It’s recommended to install the app via the Microsoft store.
If you decide to install the Installable file (.exe) instead, you might see a security warning during installation. If you see the warning prompt, click «More Info» and then «Run Anyway».

⚠ Notes:

  • If you’re running the app on the integrated GPU, the RAM usage will increase during video playback. Videos playing in the background (e.g. on the home page) are the main reason for high memory usage. You can reduce memory usage by choosing a static image for the «Windows transparency effect» and the home banner.
  • The app is still in early development (prototyping) stage. It is safe to use, it should not delete or damage any files by itself, but it’s recommended to backup (copy) your important data to an external backup drive or to your cloud storage, just for good practice.
  • Expect to see some errors and performance issues in the first versions of the app. I will be fixing the problems gradually as they get reported by the users.
  • The app has not been optimized yet, RAM usage can spike and go over 1 GB during some operations. So, for now, avoid using the app on low-tier computers (i.e. computers with 4 GB of RAM or less).

Here are 5 free open source file manager software for Windows. All these file managers (or File Explorers) bring features that are available in the native File Manager or Windows Explorer. For example, you can use right-click context menu options, view file information, use navigation pane, access hard drives, show details, large view, medium view, etc., for items and almost any other option which is a part of Windows File Explorer. So these open source file managers can also be used as an alternative to Windows File Manager.

Apart from those features, these file manager software have their own interesting and unique features also, which make them better than Windows File Explorer. For example, you can use dual pane view mode to access different folders, open multiple tabs on a single interface, split and merge files, delete files from PC securely, and more.

Let’s start with the first free open source file manager software covered here.

Explorer++

Explorer++ interface

Explorer++ is one of the best free file manager software added on this list. It comes with tabbed UI that means you can open multiple tabs and open different directories in each tab. With the tabbed interface, moving and copying files from one folder to another also becomes an easier process.

You can also mark any tab as a bookmark which is handy when you want to access a particular tab quickly. What I like the most is it has those features which aren’t available in many other File managers, including Windows own File Explorer. For example, you can split files, merge files, delete files securely, lock any tab, etc. Other features like search files using regular expression, open Command Prompt, copy folder and files paths, etc., also present which makes it more useful. So, this is definitely a handy file manager and also a very good alternative to Windows Explorer.

Better Explorer

Better Explorer- interface

If you need a Windows 7 like File Manager which is also an open source File Explorer and have some better features, then you should try “Better Explorer“. It lets you open each drive or folder in a separate tab on its interface, change view mode for items of each tab separately, clone any tab, and save a tab to use it later.

In addition to this, Better Explorer comes with its own folder size chart, preview image feature on mouse hover, and disk space analyzer to view size of different files stored in a particular drive in a pie chart. You can also use CMD within the interface of this software which is an interesting and unique feature. These are some options you won’t find in built-in file manager of Windows.

Other features like show/hide preview pane, hidden items, group items by name, size, type, etc., are also present. I like its interface and features a lot. Therefore, I can easily recommend you guys to try this open source file explorer.

Double Commander

Double Commander- interface

Double Commander is also a good open source file manager software. It also comes with dual pane view mode interface. Another great feature of this software is you can use tabs in its dual pane interface. This file manager also brings its built-in file editor with syntax highlighter. Currently, this file manager is in beta mode but it works quite fine when I tested.

The interface is divided into two sections and on each section, you can open multiple tabs. As a result, you can open different drives and folders on each tab and manage files in a better way.

You can drag n drop files to move them, or copy and paste them using right-click options. The features to copy file names to clipboard, copy file names with full path, compare directories to check files and folders, split, extract and pack files, create hard links and symbolic links for files, sort files by name, date, extension, etc., make it a powerful file manager. In fact, the software has a lot of features which are not present in built-in File Explorer of Windows.

The detailed review of Double Commander is also covered by us.

Saladin

Saladin- interface

Saladin, like Double Commander, is also a dual pane open source file manager. So you can open two different directories and then rename, delete, move files, and do other things. It also lets you compare directories and files and its dual pane interface makes comparison process convenient.

A built-in text file, image file, and binary file viewer feature is also present. Moreover, you can also perform basic FTP connections. The interface doesn’t look so attractive but features are quite good. Different buttons are also available on the top part of its interface to perform basic tasks, such as view file, view hidden files, compare files or directories, refresh its interface, cut, copy, and paste items, etc. Overall, this free open source file manager is a nice option to try.

muCommander

muCommander- interface

muCommander also provides a dual pane interface. You can adjust the size of each pane separately. For example, if you are using left pane, then you can reduce the size of right pane and vice-versa. This open source file manager also comes with built-in text file viewer and editor.

Other features like create zip file of archives, unpack them, split interface horizontally or vertically, bookmarks files and folders, swap folders, sort items by extension, size, name, and date are also available to use. It also lets you open multiple windows which is helpful when dual pane viewer is not sufficient and you want to view multiple hard drives or folders separately.

muCommander requires Java. So, you must install Java on your PC to use this software.

The Conclusion:

Here I close this list that covers some best free open source file manager software for Windows. All are good to use but “Explorer++” and “Better Explorer” are my favorite file explorers. I guess both of these software have a better interface and some good features than others. Therefore, I placed them on the top of other open source file managers on this list.
