Windows XP Professional X64 is a edition, and the 64-bit version of the Windows XP operating system released publicly on April 25, 2005. Features on this version of Windows are similar to Windows XP Pro 32-bit, the advantages of 64-bit OS will be additional only. The main advantage to use the 64-bit operating system is to allow 128 GB of RAM in PC, while the 32-bit OS can only support up to 4 GB RAM. Windows XP Professional X64 support WoW64, a Microsoft technology that allows 32-bit capable software applications to run on a 64-bit Windows operating system.

General information (for all editions)

Windows XP has a lot of updates in the user interface (compared to Windows ME and 2000), making it easier to use and navigate through files and programs. The appearance of windows shell elements such as desktops, taskbar, start menu, get a better design with transparent icons and shadow drops. The Start menu gets two columns, and now it is completely customizable by the user. Windows Explorer also gets new features and changes, like task pane (useful file actions shown in the left hand sidebar), file thumbnails, sorting, grouping etc.

Windows XP includes performance improvements such as fast boot / logon / logoff, fast application launch, CPU simultaneous multithreading, new NTFS version NTFS v3.1 and so on.

Microsoft’s developed multimedia applications have been updated and added more to the operating system, such as a new version of Windows Media Player, Windows Photo Viewer, and Movie Maker.

Three service packs have been issued for Windows XP, the first Service Pack 1 (SP1) was released in 2002, Service Pack 2 (SP2) was released on 2004, and Service Pack 3 (SP3) was released on 2008.

TUTORIAL FOR THOSE WHO IS CRASHING

For anyone downloading this and ended up crashing / BSoD-ing, you maybe downloaded the 64Bit version instead of the x64.
Differences
The 64Bit version ONLY WORKS if the user have the «Intel 64Bit Intanium» Processor, this is different from what you call x86_64 / AMD64, this cpu ONLY SUPPORTS 64BIT and WILL NOT WORK RUN 32BIT APPS.
and the version you want is the x64, or the «Windows XP Pro x64 English.iso», because this version is the one you want, because it is made for x86_64 / AMD64, thank you, either way iso works great!!

Great Release, Great Quality… but

Windows XP 64-bit is not nostalgia. This is not the version of Windows XP that anybody was running back in 2004. 64-bit released a year before Vista came out, and it didn’t have any optimizations for multi-core processors or hyperthreading. Thanks to heavier RAM requirements, Windows 32-bit or Vista 64-bit would both perform better on XP era hardware.

Windows XP 64-bit is a fun weekend project to tinker with in a VM, but that’s about it. If you’re after nostalgia or software and game compatibility, you’ll want Windows XP SP3 Home.

Windows XP Pro x64 vs Windows XP Pro 64bit

I believe the difference between the «Windows XP Pro 64Bit English» and «Windows XP Pro x64 English» iso’s is that the first one is for Intel Intanium (IA64 architecture) and the second is actually for 64 bit processors in general. I figured this out by just pressing «view contents». It says «amd64…» in one and «ia64…» in the other. The second also just matches other iso’s that are for sure the normal 64 bit iso.

I havn’t downloaded the iso yet. Just wanted to put a review in after reading a couple of them. If you don’t dosn’t the person that uploaded them. Then don’t download it. Or don’t use it as your main OS. Plus Windows XP no longer is being support by Microsoft. You could easily get malware and etc because of it. The point of having it up on the archive is it could still be found.

The reason im going to download load this is to have a VM running as i need it. I’ll turn it on. Use for whatever i need it for. Then turn it off couple hours later.

Extended support ended on April 8, 2014.[2]

Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, released on April 25, 2005, is an edition of Windows XP for x86-64 personal computers. It is designed to use the expanded 64-bit memory address space provided by the x86-64 architecture.[1]

The primary benefit of moving to 64-bit is the increase in the maximum allocatable random-access memory (RAM). 32-bit editions of Windows XP are limited to a total of 4 gigabytes. Although the theoretical memory limit of a 64-bit computer is about 16 exabytes (17.1 billion gigabytes), Windows XP x64 is limited to 128 GB of physical memory and 16 terabytes of virtual memory.[3]

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition uses the same kernel and code tree as Windows Server 2003[4] and is serviced by the same service packs.[5] However, it includes client features of Windows XP such as System Restore, Windows Messenger, Fast User Switching, Welcome Screen, Security Center and games, which Windows Server 2003 does not have.

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is not to be confused with Windows XP 64-Bit Edition as the latter was designed for Itanium architecture.[6][7] During the initial development phases, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition was named Windows XP 64-Bit Edition for 64-Bit Extended Systems.[8]

Advantages[edit]

  • Supports up to 128 GB of RAM.[9]
  • Supports up to two physical CPUs (in separate physical sockets) and up to 64 logical processors[10] (i.e. cores or threads on a single CPU). As such, as of 2014, the OS supports all commercially available multicore CPUs, including Intel Core series, or AMD FX series.
  • Uses the Windows Server 2003 kernel which is newer than 32-bit Windows XP and has improvements to enhance scalability.[11] Windows XP Professional x64 Edition also introduces Kernel Patch Protection (also known as PatchGuard) which can help improve security by helping to eliminate rootkits.[12]
  • Supports GPT-partitioned disks for data volumes (but not bootable volumes) after SP1,[13] which allows disks greater than 2 TB to be used as a single GPT partition for storing data.
  • Allows faster encoding of audio or video, higher performance video gaming and faster 3D rendering in software optimized for 64-bit hardware.
  • Ships with Internet Information Services (IIS) version 6.0. All other 32-bit editions of Windows XP have IIS v5.1.
  • Ships with Windows Media Player (WMP) version 10.[14] Windows XP Professional shipped with WMP 8 (with WMP 9 shipping with Service Pack 2 and later), although WMP 11 is available for Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later.
  • Benefits from IPsec features and improvements made in Windows Server 2003.[15]
  • Benefits from Shadow Copy features introduced in Windows Server 2003.[further explanation needed][16]
  • Remote Desktop Services supports Unicode keyboard input, client-side time-zone redirection, GDI+ rendering primitives for improved performance, FIPS encryption, fallback printer driver, auto-reconnect and new Group Policy settings.[17]
  • Files and Settings Transfer Wizard supports migrating settings from both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows XP PCs.[18]

Software compatibility[edit]

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition uses a technology named Windows-on-Windows 64-bit (WoW64), which permits the execution of 32-bit software. It was first used in Windows XP 64-bit Edition (for Itanium architecture). Later, it was adopted for x64 editions of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

Since the x86-64 architecture includes hardware-level support for 32-bit instructions, WoW64 simply switches the process between 32- and 64-bit modes. As a result, x86-64 architecture microprocessors suffer no performance loss when executing 32-bit Windows applications. On the Itanium architecture, WoW64 was required to translate 32-bit x86 instructions into their 64-bit Itanium equivalents—which in some cases were implemented in quite different ways—so that the processor could execute them. All 32-bit processes are shown with *32 in the task manager, while 64-bit processes have no extra text present.

Although 32-bit applications can be run transparently, the mixing of the two types of code within the same process is not allowed. A 64-bit program cannot use a 32-bit dynamic-link library (DLL) and similarly a 32-bit program cannot use a 64-bit DLL. This may lead to the need for library developers to provide both 32-bit and 64-bit binary versions of their libraries. Specifically, 32-bit shell extensions for Windows Explorer fail to work with 64-bit Windows Explorer. Windows XP x64 Edition ships with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Explorer.[19] The 32-bit version can become the default Windows Shell.[20] Windows XP x64 Edition also includes both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Internet Explorer 6, so that user can still use browser extensions or ActiveX controls that are not available in 64-bit versions.

Only 64-bit drivers are supported in Windows XP x64 Edition, but 32-bit codecs are supported as long as the media player that uses them is 32-bit.[21]

Installation of programs[edit]

By default, 64-bit (x86-64) Windows programs are installed onto their own folders under folder location «C:\Program Files», while 32-bit (x86-32) Windows programs are installed onto their own folders under folder location «C:\Program Files (x86)».

Known limitations[edit]

There are some limitations which apply to Windows XP Professional x64 Edition:

  • NTVDM and Windows on Windows were removed, so 16-bit Windows applications or native MS-DOS applications cannot run.[22] Some old 32-bit programs use 16-bit installers which do not run; however, replacements for 16-bit installers such as ACME Setup versions 2.6, 3.0, 3.01, 3.1 and InstallShield 5.x are hardcoded into WoW64 to mitigate this issue. The same is true with later 64-bit versions of Windows.[21]
  • Only 64-bit drivers are supported.[21]
  • Any 32-bit Windows Explorer shell extensions fail to work with 64-bit Windows Explorer. However, Windows XP x64 Edition also ships with a 32-bit Windows Explorer.[19] It is possible to make it the default Windows Shell.[23]
  • Program Manager has been removed altogether. Previously, in Windows XP Service Pack 2, running the executable did not launch it, but it stored several old icons.[citation needed]
  • Windows Command Prompt does not load in full-screen.[citation needed]
  • No native support for Type 1 fonts.[citation needed]
  • Media Bar, which replaced the Radio Toolbar in Internet Explorer 6,[24] was removed.[25]
  • Does not contain a Web Extender Client component for Web Folders (WebDAV).[26]
  • Spell checking was removed from Outlook Express.[27]
  • IEEE 1394 (FireWire) audio is not supported.[28]
  • Does not support hibernation if PC’s RAM is greater than 4 GB.[29]
  • EFI or UEFI are not supported. An ACPI BIOS is required.
  • Only provides English or Japanese as native display language. These MUIs are available for English version: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Swedish.

Service packs[edit]

The RTM version of Windows XP Professional x64 Edition was built from the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 codebase.[4] Because Windows XP Professional x64 Edition comes from a different codebase than 32-bit Windows XP, its service packs are also developed separately.[30] For the same reason, Service Pack 2 for Windows XP x64 Edition, released on March 13, 2007, is not the same as Service Pack 2 for 32-bit versions of Windows XP.[30] In fact, due to the earlier release date of the 32-bit version, many of the key features introduced by Service Pack 2 for 32-bit (x86) editions of Windows XP were already present in the RTM version of its x64 counterpart.[4] Service Pack 2 is the last released service pack for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.

Upgrade[edit]

A machine running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition cannot be directly upgraded to Windows Vista, because the 64 bit Vista DVD mistakenly recognizes XP x64 as a 32-bit system. XP x64 does qualify the customer to use an upgrade copy of Windows Vista or Windows 7, but it must be installed as a clean install.

The last version of Microsoft Office to be compatible with Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is Office 2007, and the last version of Internet Explorer compatible with the operating system is Internet Explorer 8 (Service Pack 2 is required).

For 64-bit Windows for Itanium systems, see Windows XP 64-bit Edition.

Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition released on April 25, 2005 by Microsoft is a 64-bit edition of the typically 32-bit Windows XP operating system for x86-64 personal computers.

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is based upon Windows Server 2003 SP1 (build 5.2.3790.1830) as that was the latest version of Microsoft Windows during the operating system’s development, but takes Windows XP as its name. It is designed to use the expanded 64-bit memory address space provided by the AMD64 architecture; Intel refers to its implementation of the technology as EM64T.

The primary benefit of moving to 64-bit is the increase in the maximum allocatable system memory (RAM). Windows XP 32-bit is limited to a total of 4 GB, which is equally divided between Kernel and application usage. Windows XP x64 can support much more memory; although the theoretical memory limit a 64-bit computer can address is about 18 billion GB (18 exabytes), Windows XP x64 is currently limited to 128 GB ({\displaystyle 2^{37}}bytes) of physical memory and 16 TB ({\displaystyle 2^{44}} bytes) of virtual memory. Microsoft claims this limit will be increased as hardware capabilities improve.

The x64 Edition is not to be confused with the “64-bit Edition”, as the latter was designed for IA-64 (Intel Itanium) processors.[1][2] They both are commonly referred to as 64-bit Windows by Microsoft due to their similarities from the developers’ point of view.

Compatibility with 32-bit applications[]

Windows XP x64 Edition uses a technology named WOW64, which permits the execution of 32-bit x86 applications. It was first employed in Windows XP 64-bit Edition, but then reused for the “x64 Editions” of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

Since the AMD64 architecture includes hardware-level support for 32-bit instructions, WOW64 simply switches the process between 32- and 64-bit modes. However, on the IA-64 architecture, WOW64 was required to translate 32-bit x86 instructions into their 64-bit IA-64 equivalents which in some cases were implemented in quite different ways so that the processor could execute them. As a result, AMD64 microprocessors suffer no performance loss when executing 32-bit Windows applications, whereas IA-64 implementations experience noticeable performance loss.

Although 32-bit applications can be run transparently, the mixing of the two types of code within the same process is not allowed. A 64-bit application cannot link against a 32-bit library (DLL) and similarly a 32-bit application cannot link against a 64-bit library. This may lead to the need for library developers to provide both 32- and 64-bit binary versions of their libraries. Windows XP x64 Edition includes both 32- and 64-bit versions of Internet Explorer, in order to allow for the possibility that some third-party browser plugins or ActiveX controls may not yet be available in 64-bit versions.

Older 32-bit drivers and services are not supported by 64-bit Windows, but video and audio codecs such as XviD or OggDS, which are in fact 32-bit DLLs, are supported as long as the media player that uses them is 32-bit as well. This includes popular video players such as Media Player Classic.

Compatibility with other applications[]

Unlike prior versions of the Windows NT line, 64-bit Windows versions do not include NTVDM so there is no support for the execution of MS-DOS, POSIX, OS/2 1.x and 16-bit Windows applications, although there are 3rd-party software emulators such as DOSbox that can be used to run DOS programs.

Another solution is to use virtualization software like VMware or Virtual PC to run other versions of Windows or MS-DOS.

Trivia[]

During the initial development phases (2003–2004), Windows XP x64 Edition was named Windows XP 64-bit Edition for x86 Extended systems and later, Windows XP 64-bit Edition for Extended systems, as opposed to 64-bit Edition for Itanium systems.

Because of their lineage to Windows 2003, Windows XP x64 Edition (along with Windows XP 64-bit Edition Version 2003) are the only versions of Windows XP to ship with IIS 6.0 (all other versions of XP have IIS 5.1).

The default wallpaper in this edition is Windows XP, rather than Bliss like in the 32-bit edition of Windows XP Professional.
