Microsoft regularly releases major updates to its Windows operating systems.

Formerly, those updates pushed through comprehensive service packs, but more often these days, they’re semi-regular and significant updates through Windows Update.

In fact, beginning in Windows 8, the service pack, as we know it from previous versions of Windows, is essentially a dead idea. Much like updates on your smartphone, Microsoft is continually adding major features through automatic patching.

Latest Major Updates to Windows 11

As of September 2023, the latest major update to Windows 11 is Windows 11 Version 22H2, referred to as the Windows 11 2022 Update. Updating is automatic through Windows Update.

The last major update to Windows 10 is Windows 10 Version 22H2, referred to as the Windows 10 2022 Update. Updating, like in Windows 11, is automatic through Windows Update.

Latest Major Updates to Windows 8

The last major update for Windows 8 is the confusingly named Windows 8.1 Update.

If you’ve already updated to Windows 8.1, the easiest way to update to Windows 8.1 Update is through Windows Update. See instructions for manually installing Windows 8.1 Update in the Download Windows 8.1 Update section of our Windows 8.1 Update piece.

If you’re not already running Windows 8.1, see How to Update to Windows 8.1 for detailed instructions on applying the Windows 8.1 update. When that’s done, update to Windows 8.1 Update through Windows Update.

Microsoft isn’t planning another big update to Windows 8, like a Windows 8.2 or Windows 8.1 Update 2. New features, if available, will instead be pushed through updates on Patch Tuesday.

Latest Microsoft Windows Service Packs (Windows 7, Vista, XP)

The last Windows 7 service pack is SP1, but a Convenience Rollup for Windows 7 SP1 (basically an otherwise-named Windows 7 SP2) is also available which installs all patches between the release of SP1 (February 22, 2011) through April 12, 2016.

The last service packs for other versions of Windows include Windows Vista SP2, Windows XP SP3, and Windows 2000 SP4.

The easiest way to install the latest Windows service pack or update is to run Windows Update.

KB4534310 Download Links for Windows 7

Direct Download Links: 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit.

On January 14, Windows 7 reached the end of life and the operating system will no longer receive any other security patches. Windows 7 KB4534310 is apparently the final update for the OS and KB4534314 is the last security-only update.

Windows 7 EOL (End of Life) means the OS would no longer receive security updates and patches from Microsoft and KB4534310 is the final or last update. Windows 7 Home and Pro users shouldn’t expect any updates or critical patched from Microsoft after January 14.

To download the last update on Windows 7, just open Control Panel and then choose Windows Update. Select ‘Check for updates’ to check for new updates if you don’t see this particular patch listed on the screen.

You might need to install the patch via the Install updates button, depending on the configuration of Windows Update you’re using. As always, you can download Windows 7 KB4534310 offline installers and manually update the PCs.

Along with a bunch of cumulative updates KB5022303 and KB5022287 for Windows 11 and KB5022282 for Windows 10 Devices. Microsoft Today also released a couple of updates KB5022352 and KB5022346 for older releases well. As you may remember, Microsoft ended support for Windows 7 on 14th January 2020 so these updates are only for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2. The company also released KB5022338 and KB5022339 for Windows 7 and server 2008 businesses who have signed up (paid) for Extended Security Updates (ESU).

As usual, there are two different updates, a monthly rollup and a security-only update that only includes security fixes. While the monthly rollup can be acquired from Windows Update, the security-only update must be installed manually.

Windows 8.1 update

Windows 8.1 KB5022352 (Monthly Rollup) and KB5022346 (Security-only update) Addressed the following points.

Hence Microsoft previously announced Windows 8.1 will reach end of support on January 10, 2023, Today’s update package KB5022352 and KB5022346 is the last patch for windows 8 and 8.1,

Microsoft displays a modal dialog that informs Home users about the end of support. The message does not appear on managed devices that run Windows 8.1 Pro or Enterprise.
Authentication may fail if the “higher 16-bits of the msds-SupportedEncryptionTypes attribute” are set.
Resolved the Microsoft Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) SQL Server Driver (sqlsrv32.dll) that could cause connections to fail.

KB5022338 Monthly Rollup and KB5022339 Security-only update for windows 7 service pack 1 also include similar changes as for windows 8.1.

Known issue

After installing this update and restarting your device, you might receive the error, “Failure to configure Windows updates. Reverting Changes. Do not turn off your computer,” and the update might show as Failed in Update History.

The company says this issue expected in the following circumstances:

If you are installing this update on a device that is running an edition that is not supported for ESU. For a complete list of which editions are supported, see KB4497181.
If you do not have an ESU MAK add-on key installed and activated.

If you have purchased an ESU key and have encountered this issue, please verify you have applied all prerequisites and that your key is activated.

Microsoft noted another known issue – After this update or a later Windows update is installed, domain join operations might be unsuccessful and error “0xaac (2732): NERR_AccountReuseBlockedByPolicy” occurs.

Important Note: Windows 7 reached end of life

With Update (KB4598279, KB4598289) Windows 7 reached the end of life. that means Devices still running Windows 7 will no longer receive any security updates and patches from Microsoft. And the company recommends upgrade Windows 11 for the latest security features and protection against malicious software

Microsoft says The specific end of support day for Windows 7 will be January 14, 2020 Technical assistance and software updates from Windows Update that help protect your PC are no longer available for the product.

This update will be downloaded and installed automatically via Windows Update on all compatible devices running Windows 7 SP1, Windows Server 2008 SP1 and connected to the Microsoft server. To check and install updates manually

Open the Start. menu. …
Open Control Panel. Click the Control Panel on the right column of the Start.
Go to “System and Security”. Click on the green header.
Open Windows Update. Choose “Windows Update” from the middle of the list.
Check for updates. Click the Check for updates button on the main screen.
