Caution
1.Please do not use the Canon RAW Codec and the RAW image processing function of ZoomBrowser EX together.
2.There are cases where the RAW file metadata that was edited under an environment in which Canon RAW Codec 1.7 or later is installed is not available for browsing under an environment in which Canon RAW Codec 1.3 or earlier installed. When sharing a RAW file, use the same version in every environment.
3.Because there has been a change in the RAW image processing for the EOS DIGITAL products, there may be some differences in RAW image display and printing results when comparing with those of Canon RAW Codec 1.3 or earlier.
4.If a Vista PC with Canon RAW Codec installed is upgraded to Windows7, Canon RAW Codec will not function. As a workaround, uninstall Canon RAW Codec first, and then reinstall Canon RAW Codec again after the OS upgrade. (If Canon RAW Codec is installed after the upgrade, there will be no problems.)

Canon RAW Codec Review
Canon RAW Codec – The Canon RAW Codec enables you to use the full power of your camera’s RAW files.
This codec lets you view and playback Canon Raw files on your computer. It is compatible with most graphic cards and video playback software.
A Raw file comprises unprocessed image data taken by the camera. Viewing or editing a raw file needs to be converted into a format that the computer’s operating system can read and process. This software provides three different ways for you to convert your raw files.
Canon RAW Codec is a Windows user application that frequently transfers video data from the Canon EOS line of digital cameras to PCs. It supports importing such data in Canon’s Camera RAW format and allows for editing immediately after importing it.
Other Driver: Canon Inkjet Smart Connect
Canon RAW Codec – The Canon RAW Codec software can be used to import photos shot in Canon RAW format into Windows Explorer and Photoshop. Some products, including a PIXMA printer, or SELPHY Compact Photo Print App, will also support the RAW codec.
The Canon RAW Codec contains Canon RAW conversion software that lets you import and view CRW, CR2, and other RAW files to help you refine your images. The full codec version also offers a batch processing tool for those who want to convert multiple photos at once or want more control over some features, such as contrast curves.
Canon RAW Codec – Enjoy the freedom to capture with your Canon EOS digital camera and know that you’re capturing exactly what you see. The RAW codec allows you to adjust to contrast, saturation, noise reduction and more without losing details in your photos.

CR3 codecs for Windows10
Dec 13, 2018
Are there already codecs out there for thumbnails in Win10?
Re: CR3 codecs for Windows10
That’s interesting that you bring that up. My thumbnail preview used to show nothing, now it shows the Photoshop ‘PS’ logo. I think my computer updated itself last night as well…could also be due to the new Camera Raw update too.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for a codec update from Microsoft. You might want to look at some third party alternatives if you need to have this functionality.

Thank you. So once Faststone is installed, thumbnails will show up in Windows Explorer?

They don’t even have codecs in Windows 10 for the CR2 files from the last 2-3 years (M5, 6D ii etc), so I wouldn’t expect anything for CR3 for another few years. My old 70D was only supported last year I think.

Until EOS R you could have raw files preview in File Explorer thanks to FastPictureViewer Codec Pack
https://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs
But CR3 are still unsupported…
In alternative you can use Fast Stone that it’s free and can read the CR3 files of the R!

Thank you. LR and C1 do the job. But it would be nice to have thumbnails in Explorer.

As far as I know, Canon doesn’t provide the codecs to anyone. Microsoft (and Apple) develop the codecs for their respective OS. I just use DPP or Bridge to view unsupported file types.

Well, I guess then being on LR 6.14 and converting to DNG has the advantage of having thumbnails in Windows

Any news on this?
I would like to see the thumbnails of my M50 .cr3 files too!
DNG converting for me is no solution as I use C-RAW only and the Adobe DNG converter blows up the files to the size of non compressed RAW …

Microsoft recently released the ‘Raw Image Extension.’ It’s usable only with Windows 10 version 1903.

It looks like the M50 isn’t supported yet.

Yup, no R support either. I haven»t used the C-Raw, but so far, I have found two ways in which I like viewing CR3 raw files: 1) in DPP4 (if you understand how it works, it is a great photo viewer even if you don’t want to do any editing in it) and 2) maybe easier for some, in Lightroom CC. I don’t particularly like shooting in jpg, but by shooting raw+jpg, I can use the jpg file to see what I want to work on, then right click on the raw version and open it in Photoshop. Bridge would work for me too; I just haven’t used it much.
I am glad Microsoft is offering at least some codecs; I guess it was in the works before Canon started using CR3.
By being forced to use DPP4, I have come to really like a lot that can be done with the program. It is really worth learning it!
Re: CR3 codecs for Windows10
Found a response from Canon on a Microsoft forum.
Answers from Canon.
Dear Sir,
Thank you for your feedback.
Unfortunately, we have to confirm that Canon indeed no longer makes codecs available to view a thumbnail of the RAW images in the Windows Explorer.
The codecs can therefore also not be downloaded or sent by e-mail.
For viewing RAW images, we only provide our software, Digitial Photo Professional.
We are very sorry not to be able to provide you with a solution.
If you have any further questions, please contact us by replying to this message.
Sincerely,
Canon Services & Support
Slightly inconvenient if you’ve been using thumbnails in Explorer for years.

Not true. Rather than «Photos,» my default programs are FastRawViewer for CR3 files and FastPIctureViewer for CR2 and JPG files. All of these photo types display as thumbnail photos when File Explorer is set to display icons larger than small. When it’s set to display Small Icons or Details, the default view program icon (FRV or FPV) for the respective file type shows in the directory list. I installed FRV after acquiring the 1DX III because the codec supplied with the quick but ancient FPV had not been updated; the program would not open CR3 files. With the updated Microsoft codec, FPV can now also open CR3’s.

ACDSEE is and has been my default photo software since the 1980’s! I just checked again. The codec works fine with all my CR2 and CR3 images.

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up. I check the Microsoft Store for an update from time-to-time, but didn’t know about this recent update. Maybe now I can go back to shooting only RAW files. Hopefully this update will work with the R5’s RAW files.

FRW has it’s one codec pack and this is not supporting CR3. Do you see a thumbnails of the CR3 file in Windows Explorer with FastRawViewer as default.?
My default program for CR2 is PS 2020 and without FWR Codec Pack and with Raw Image Extension I only get the default thumbnails in Windows Explorer. Only after I make Photo’s the default I get a proper thumbnail but small. Raw Image Extension is displaying the embedded JPG files in DNG or any other RAW extension. Not the actual Raw itself in full size.
