It performs FLAC conversion, which is designed especially for audio files. You can play FLAC files directly on various supporting devices, without decompressing them.
FLAC is a lossless audio coding format which reduces audio files to 50-60% of their original size. It is superior to MP3 and it doesn’t affect the quality of music.
FLAC contains the following: the stream format; encoder and decoders in library form, plugins for various music players and two command line programs: “flac”, which encodes and decodes FLAC files, and “metaflac”, which is a metadata editor for FLAC files.
Less experienced users are advised to work in FLAC Frontend, also supplied in this package.
FLAC has a series of advantages which will definitely convince you to use it if you are interested in compressing your music smartly.
It doesn’t affect the integrity of data; it performs fast real-time decoding on even less advanced hardware; it supports any kind of hardware; you can use it in editing applications due to its fast sample-accurate seeking tool; you can introduce new metadata blocks without breaking older streams of decoders and errors don’t damage the entire stream. Instead, they only affect the containing frame.
FLAC is extremely suitable for archiving. You don’t lose any data, in case you want to convert the music to another format. This application has a verifying option which allows you to decode the encoded stream during the encoding process and to compare the result with the original input.
FLAC is a complex tool, in spite of its small size. It introduces to you one of the best audio coding formats and it helps you save disc space without affecting the quality of your music.
It is rather suitable for experienced users, but anyone can give it a try if they just want to convert audio files to FLAC and nothing more.

Впрочем, её и так нет — он бесплатный. Чтобы подружить Windows Media Player с неподдерживаемыми форматами, нужно устанавливать дополнительные плагины. Давайте научим его понимать FLAC, один из популярных форматов музыки без потери качества.
Для того, чтобы FLAC стал родным для WMP форматом, есть несколько способов. Рассмотрим два из них.
Способ первый — madFlac. Это дополнение позволяет воспроизводить файлы формата FLAC и редактировать их теги так же легко, как и родной формат WMA.
1. Скачайте madFLAC, распакуйте и запустите install.bat.
2. После установки остается создать вашу библиотеку заново — файлы FLAC появятся в ней, и даже станет возможным поиск и обновление информации об альбомах и исполнителях через интеренет.
Способ второй — M4a/FLAC/Ogg/Ape/Mpc плагин для Windows Media Player. Этот способ более универсальный, нежели чем первый, так как он позволяет прослушивать не только файлы формата FLAC, но и OGG, APE, MPC, M4A, TTA.
1. Установите плагин для поддержки M4a/FLAC/Ogg/Ape/Mpc.
2. Установите фильтры Direct Show для воспроизведения разных типов файлов:
- 3ivx – для m4a
- Ogg, Flac и Speex Direct Show фильтры
- Ape, Mpc, OptimFrog и TTA фильтры
После этого вам станут доступны все операции, которые можно проводить с музыкальными файлами: изменение тегов, поиск информации о музыке в интернете, закачка обложек, выставление рейтингов, и прочие.
Оба способа работают не только для Windows Media Player, но и для Windows Media Center, и являются общесистсемными — любые программы, использующие системные установки, автоматически научатся понимать не поддерживаемые ранее форматы музыки.
About FLAC
FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is a very popular lossless, open source audio encoder and decoder.
FLAC encoded files are usually 50-60% smaller than the source files, which is a good result considering that lossless compression is used.
FLAC encoded files usually have the .flac extension. Sometimes you can also find Ogg-FLAC files – audio files with the FLAC audio stream embedded in the Ogg container and with the .ogg extension.

Both ZIP archives contain two executables: flac.exe (FLAC encoder/decoder), metaflac.exe (metadata editor).
Basic usage
Encode WAV file to FLAC using default compression level (5):flac file.wav -o output_file.flac

FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality. This is similar to how Zip works, except with FLAC you will get much better compression because it is designed specifically for audio, and you can play back compressed FLAC files in your favorite player (or your car or home stereo, see supported devices) just like you would an MP3 file. The FLAC encoder is a command line flac encoder.
