How to Reset Windows 10 or 8 PC If The Operating System Won’t Boot

Hi all, new guy here who inherited a neglected setup of PC’s a home computer designated a ‘server’ and just a whole bunch of other «stuff»…

The setup I walked into was pretty simple. 

One home made desktop PC running server 2012 R2 with two hard drives in it and an external «backup» drive.

The first thing I did was to get things encrypted and syncing to an offsite backup… the second was to get a few servers (donated, slow, but at least something better than nothing) and then add them as backup DC’s… everything has been going great until a week ago when the Primary Domain Controller (home built pc) decided to do updates. 

Since it rebooted, it has not come back online. Have been fighting a HOST of problems, but finally got it back to where it will boot up, but it throws the blue screen of KMode Exception. It does not seem to identify any driver that is a problem however it does say «we are gathering information..etc» after the error. Windows tries to reboot and eventually it ends up on the same error message. 

To compound problems the backup DC’s, while it seems they are doing their job and permitting people to login, will not allow any AD controls to users, because the Primary is down. I am aware of the process to seize control and give it to one of the backup DC’s but would really prefer to figure out this KMode exception first. 

The reason I write to you today is because my google searches have brought back info, but not any related to this error and server 2012 r2… it’s mostly windows 10 people.

So where we we start here? After the KMode error it says it’s gathering data….takes a while and then reboots.. where does that error data go? Any help is most appreciated.. ! What route would you take from here?
