Whenever installing OSes or doing anything that can potentially mess with the current drives and/or bootloaders, having proper up-to-date, versioned, and known to work (recoverable) backups is a MUST, period.
Users should always have backups of all files they can’t afford to loose. Drives can and do fail anytime.
Now, specifically regarding your question, and unlike some comments seem to point out, you can enable AHCI support in an already installed Windows and then install a Linux distro in dual-boot. There is no difference in performance.
Here’s the currently recommended method as posted by the user Heynnema at AskUbuntu:
- Right-click the Windows Start Menu. Choose Command Prompt (Admin).
- If you don’t see Command Prompt listed, it’s because you have already been updated to a later version of Windows. If so, use this method instead to get to the Command Prompt:
- Click the Start Button and type cmd
- Right-click the result and select Run as administrator
- Type this command and press ENTER: bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal
- If this command does not work for you, try bcdedit /set safeboot minimal
- Restart the computer and enter BIOS Setup (the key to press varies between systems).
- Change the SATA Operation mode to AHCI from either IDE or RAID (again, the language varies).
- Save changes and exit Setup and Windows will automatically boot to Safe Mode.
- Right-click the Windows Start Menu once more. Choose Command Prompt (Admin)
- Type this command and press ENTER: bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot
- If you had to try the alternate command above, you will likely need to do so here also: bcdedit /deletevalue safeboot
- Reboot once more and Windows will automatically start with AHCI drivers enabled.

Is Intel RST needed for SSD?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the answer may vary depending on the specific SSD and system configuration. However, in general, Intel RST (Rapid Storage Technology) is not required for SSDs, as SSDs typically do not require the same level of performance optimization that traditional hard drives do.
What happens if Intel RST service is not running?
If the Intel RST service is not running, it may impact the performance of your computer. We recommend checking to see if the service is running and, if not, starting the service. Which is better IDE or AHCI?
There is no definitive answer to this question as it depends on personal preferences and project requirements. Some developers prefer IDEs (Integrated Development Environments) as they provide a more comprehensive set of tools and features. Others prefer AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) as it offers better performance and is more lightweight. Ultimately, it is up to the developer to decide which is best for their needs.
Should SATA mode be AHCI or IDE?
There are a few things to consider when deciding which SATA mode to use. The most important factor is compatibility with your system. If your system only supports IDE mode, then you will need to use that mode. If your system supports both AHCI and IDE mode, then you can choose which one to use. AHCI mode is generally faster and more efficient, so it is the recommended mode. However, if you are having trouble getting your system to work with AHCI mode, then you can try using IDE mode.

Hello bluesecond,
Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.
So we can have more information about your system, please provide the following:
1. Run the Intel® System Support Utility (Intel® SSU) and attach the report generated:
- Open the application, check the «Everything» box, and click on «Scan» to see the system and device information. By default, Intel® SSU will take you to the «Summary View».
- Click on the menu where it says «Summary» to change to «Detailed View».
- To save your scan, click on «Next», then «Save».
- Use the option under the reply window to attach the report to the thread (Drag and drop here or browse files to attach).
2. Provide the System Report for Intel® Rapid Storage Technology.
Regarding the uninstallation of the user interface, you can go to Apps and Features and uninstall the user interface manually. The name of the App that you have to uninstall is «Rapid Storage Technology«. If you don’t have a RAID volume you can uninstall the App/Software, we recommend you to leave the Driver that is the «Intel Chipset SATA/PCIe RST Premium Controller«.
After that, you can go to Device Manager and uninstall the driver if available:
- Press Windows X keys.
- Select Device Manager.
- Find and expand the Disk drives catalog.
- Right-click on Intel® Rapid Storage Technology and choose Uninstall device.
Note: If you receive an error when trying to uninstall, check that all the Intel® RST services are stopped before trying again. The IAStorUI.exe, IAStorIcon.exe, IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe, iaStorA.sys, relate to the Intel® RST monitor service.

Для установки Ubuntu или основанных на нём дистрибутивов в BIOS должен быть выключен Intel RSTopen in new window (Intel Rapid Storage Technology). В разных ноутбуках операция выключения производится по разному.
