Description

This article describes the steps that need to be taken to uninstall a managed FortiClient using the FC Removal Tool.

Scope

FortiClient 6.0+, 6.2+, 6.4+, 7.0+, 7.2+.

Solution

Sometimes there is a need to force the FortiClient uninstallation from an endpoint that has no connection with EMS, therefore a special tool will be needed for that, in this case, it will be using the FortiClient Removal tool, follow all the steps that need to be taken to accomplish this task.

1. Access the site ‘https://support.fortinet.com’ login with the credentials and navigate to ‘Support‘ -> ‘Firmware Download‘:

1. In ‘Select Product‘, choose the option ‘FortiClient‘, select ‘Download‘, and then ‘Windows‘:

   

2. Navigate to the needed version, in this example, it is chosen ‘v7.00 / 7.0 / 7.0.8‘, then download the FortiClientTools, select ‘HTTPS‘:

   

3. Copy the Tools to the machine that needs the FortiClient to be uninstalled and boot the Windows in ‘Safe Mode‘.

   Tip: To ask the Windows endpoint to boot in safe mode without the need for pressing the F8 button during startup, open a Command Prompt and type the following: bcdedit /set {default} safeboot minimal.

   Then reboot the system:

   

4. Go to the directory where the tools were copied, unzip the file, and access the ‘SupportUtils‘ folder:

   

5. Execute the ‘FCRemove.exe‘ as administrator:

   

6. A warning message will appear, read it and select ‘OK‘ to proceed:

   

7. Another warning message stating that it will be necessary to reboot the system, for the uninstallation to be completed, select ‘Yes‘ to proceed:
   Tip: It is also possible to select ‘No’, and configure the system to boot in normal mode prior to reboot.
   To ask the Windows endpoint to boot in normal mode without the need for pressing the F8 button, open a Command Prompt and type the following: bcdedit /deletevalue safeboot.
   
   Then it is possible to manually reboot the system:

   

8. The system will reboot and the uninstallation will be completed with success:

   

   Now the system does not have the FortiClient installed anymore.

FortiClient Uninstall Issues

FortiClient is a free antivirus suite developed by Fortinet to provide a handful tools like virus detection, web security control, and VPN client. During the uninstall of FortiClient, you may be faced with the following issues on your Windows computer:

Step 2: Uninstall FortiClient

Once installed properly, any third party program can be uninstalled from Windows uninstall applet. Make sure to log in as an administrator to perform the uninstall.

On Windows 7:

• Head to Start > Control Panel > Programs, and click the Uninstall programs link.
• Scroll through to select FortiClient from the list, and click Uninstall button.

On Windows 8 &10:

• Right click on Start menu and then click Programs and Features from the list.
• Select FortiClient in the list, and click Uninstall to start the uninstallation.

Windows 10 users can also manage installed apps from the Settings app. Here is how to uninstall FortiClient via Settings: click on Start menu > Settings, and then click on the Apps & features in the left-hand sidebar; as the list in the right-hand extends, select FortiClient, and click on the Uninstall button twice.

As the Windows Installer window pops up, follow the onscreen instructions.

• Click on Yes to confirm the uninstall, and then click OK to close running apps.

• When it is finished, click on Yes button to exit the setup wizard and restart your PC.

Tip: If FortiClient has been corrupted, or some of its main executive files are missing, you may fail to uninstall it by this way. In that case, you can re-install FortiClient to cover those problematic files, and then uninstall it in the Safe Mode.

Step 3: Remove FortiClient remnants

FortiClient now should have been removed from the list of install programs, but you may notice that some of its components, like registry entries, invalid shortcut or installation folder, still linger around your system. To fully delete FortiClient, you are supposed to search for and delete those leftovers in your whole system.

1) Keys & values in registry

• Go to Start > Run, type «regedit» and hit Enter to launch Registry Editor.
• Click Yes if you are prompted to give confirmation in UAC dialog.
• Click the Find from Edit menu, type FortiClient in the Find box, and then hit Enter key to start searching matched items in Registry.
• Once found, right click on the key or value and choose delete option from the list.
• Hit F3 to locate the next entry associated with FortiClient.

 

Note: Be truly careful to make changes on Windows Registry. You had better to delete the entries after making a backup copy of the registry. 2) Files & folders in hard drive

• Head to Start > Control Panel > Folder Options, and then select the View tab.
• Check the «Show hidden files and folders» in Advanced settings and click OK.
• Click This PC on the desktop (or press Windows + E ) to open File Explorer.
• Type FortiClient in the Search Bar, and wait for the scanning result.
• Identify and delete FortiClient components in the search result.

How do I get this program off the computer?  The uninstall button not working??  Here’s how.
TESTED in Windows 10

1. Launch FortiClient, then find and select «unlock settings»
   

   If successful the «unlock settings» button usually disappears.

2. In the Windows System Tray, right-click the FortiTray icon, then select «Shutdown FortiClient»

   
3. Once FortiClient is shutdown, uninstall FortiClient using the Windows Add/Remove Programs application.
4. BUT what if the uninstall is not highlighted?!?
   
5. (tested in windows 10 )
   Open a CMD prompt as ADMINISTRATOR 

   

6. Now we’ll use the following command.  Please noted that every system I’ve ever tried this on, the machine force rebooted itself.

   wmic product where «name like ‘Forti%%'» call uninstall /nointeractive

   This command uses the «Windows Management Instrumentation» command line to remove the app.

7. It may take a few minutes for this command to run, but generally, if successful, the computer will reboot and the app will be fully removed.
