Корпорация Microsoft объявила о завершении поддержки Центра устройств Windows Mobile (WMDC) ещё в 2012 году. Начиная с ОС Windows 10 версии 1703, все последующие версии ОС не будут поддерживать работу WMDC.

Trimble рекомендует, по возможности, рассматривать альтернативные решения для WMDC. Некоторые альтернативы перечислены ниже.

Для обмена данными с устройствами на Windows Mobile можно использовать USB накопители или карты памяти, поддерживаемые этими устройствами.

Если все же необходимо подключить устройство к компьютеру с ОС Windows 10, например, для установки/обновления полевого ПО, сделайте следующее:

— установите и включите .NET Framework 3.5

Does anyone know how I can get a Windows Mobile 6.5 PDA to connect up to a Windows 10 PC?

Before upgrading the PC from Window 8.1 I was able to use Windows Mobile Device Center to link up to the PDA over USB. This allowed me to access files on the PDA via Windows Explorer, access the internet from the PDA over our network and deploy to the PDA via Visual Studio 2008.

I had to uninstall Windows Mobile Device Center as part of the Windows 10 installation, as it was flagged as incompatible with Windows 10. I can’t seem to find an alternative for Windows 10?

Unfortunately the Windows Mobile Device Center stopped working out of the box after the Creators Update for Windows 10. The application won’t open and therefore it’s impossible to get the sync working. In order to get it running now we need to modify the ActiveSync registry settings. Create a BAT file with the following contents and run it as administrator:

REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RapiMgr /v SvcHostSplitDisable /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WcesComm /v SvcHostSplitDisable /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Restart the computer and everything should work.

I have managed to get my PDA working properly with Windows 10.

For transparency when I posted the original question I had upgraded a Windows 8.1 PC to Windows 10, I have since moved to using a different PC that had a clean Windows 10 installation.

These are the steps I followed to solve the problem:

  • First of all I installed Visual Studio 2008.
  • Then I installed Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1
    • http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3182
  • Then Windows Mobile 6 Professional and Standard Software Development Kits Refresh
    • http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=6135
  • Then Windows Mobile 6.5 Developer Tool Kit
    • http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17284
  • Finally I opened up the Mobile Device Center, went to Mobile Device Settings -> Connection Settings and made sure DMA was selected under «Allow connections to one of the following»

Had the same problem. Came across an article from Zebra with the fix that worked for me:

  1. Open services.msc
  2. Go to Windows Mobile-2003-based device connectivity
  3. Right click Windows Mobile-2003-based device connectivity and click Properties
  4. Go to Log On Tab
  5. Choose Local System Account

  2. Go to General Tab
  3. Press Stop and wait
  4. Once stopped, press Start
  5. Press OK
  6. Restart your PC
  7. Retry the Windows Mobile Device Center

    • Allow service to interact with desktop

  5. Restart your PC

Here is the answer:
Download the «Windows Mobile Device Center» for your machine type, likely 64bit.

Before you run the install, change the compatibility settings to ‘Windows 7’.
Then install it…
Then run it: You’ll find it under ‘WMDC’..
Your device should now recognize, when plugged in, mine did!

Install Windows Mobile Device Center for your architecture. (It will install older versions of .NET if needed.) In USB to PC settings on device uncheck Enable advanced network and tap OK. This worked for me on 2 different Windows 10 PCs.

I haven’t managed to get WMDC working on Windows 10 (it hanged on splash screen upon start), so I’ve finally uninstalled it. But now I have a Portable Devices / Compact device in the Device Manager and I can browse my Windows Compact 7 device within Windows Explorer. All my apps using RAPI also work.
Maybe this is the result of installing/uninstalling WMDC, or probably this functionality was already presented on Windows 10 and I’ve just overlooked it initially.

This article provides instructions for installing Windows Mobile Device Center.

Note: This information is provided as a reference and does not imply that Juniper Systems will provide full support for the use of any specific third-party software.

Microsoft officially ended updates for Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC, formerly ActiveSync) with Windows Vista in 2008. WMDC may not work in newer Windows versions, particularly Windows 10 version 1703 (Creators Update) OS Build 15063 or newer, or Windows 11 after Feb 2023, so an alternative is recommended.

WMDC in Newer Versions of Windows

Update 16 Mar 2023: We have verified that the information below is also applicable for computers running Windows 11, though may not work after some Windows Update in Feb 2023.

If you absolutely need to use WMDC in a newer version of Windows, some possible methods to get it to work are listed below.

Most Common Method

The most common method used to get WMDC to work is to run our WMDC-fixes-for-Win10.msi patch utility, which may fix WMDC automatically after a restart.

  1. Download the 64-bit drvupdate-amd64.exe or the 32-bit drvupdate-x86.exe. There are two parts to this installation.

  4. Open WMDC on your computer.

Other Methods

There are other methods of getting WMDC to work, but they are older and usually unnecessary.

  2. Locate the file through File Explorer.
  3. Right-click on the file to Run as administrator (even if you are already logged in as an admin).

WMDC may not work in newer Windows versions, particularly Windows 10 version 1703 (Creators Update) OS Build 15063. If you absolutely need to use WMDC in a newer version of Windows, some possible methods to get it to work are as follows.

An abbreviated summary of a common method used to get it to work requires running our WMDC-fixes-for-Win10.msi patch utility (below), uninstall WMDC (both the driver update then main app), use Task Manager to end task on the two WMDC processes, use msconfig (System Configuration) to stop the two WMDC services, Restart, manually delete the entire C:\Windows\WindowsMobile folder, re-install drvupdate-amd64.exe from our website, manually launch WMDC, connect cable, and then wait usually up to two minutes the first time connecting.

After installing WMDC, if you are having difficulties running or connecting, download and run the following utility on your PC as an administrator.

WMDC-Helper.exe

Sometimes before being successful at installing WMDC, you must first manually enable the required .NET Framework 3.5 under “Turn Windows features on or off” and/or by using the previous dotNetFx35setup.exe installer from Microsoft.

We highly recommend that you run the 64-bit drvupdate-amd64.exe or 32-bit drvupdate-x86.exe installer as an Admin and in «Compatibility Mode» for Windows Vista if WMDC and the required drivers do not successfully install automatically through the Windows Update service when you connect USB.

After install and once «Windows Mobile Device Center» appears in the list under the Start menu on the desktop PC, similar to as is automatically applied by our «WMDC-Helper.exe» utility referenced above, you may need to run Windows Powershell as an adminstrator to apply the following registry commands, and then perform a Restart.

REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RapiMgr /v SvcHostSplitDisable /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WcesComm /v SvcHostSplitDisable /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

This is less likely, but you may additionally need to open «Computer Management» as an Admin to view Services and Applications > Services to change the Properties of the “Windows Mobile-2003-based device connectivity” and “Windows mobile-based device connectivity” services to Log On using «Local System Account», and then Start each service. You may sometimes need to re-apply and Start these again when re-connecting device or after performing a Restart on the PC.

Even if you are not able to get WMDC to show it is connected, you may still be able to browse the contents of the device through File Explorer (which will appear as a drive under «This PC») or synchronize anyway
