  1. Нажмите на клавиатуре сочетание клавиш Win+R. Откроется окно «Выполнить». Введите в нем команду ncpa.cpl (можете скопировать ее и вставить) и нажмите Ok.

  2. Откроется окно «Сетевые подключения». Нажмите правой кнопкой мыши на тот адаптер, для которого вы хотите отключить IPv6 и выберите Свойства. Ethernet – это проводное подключение (сетевая карта), а Беспроводная сеть – это Wi-Fi.

  3. В новом окне нужно убрать галочку возле пункта IP версии 6 (TCP/IPv6).

Все готово, протокол IPv6 отключен для данного сетевого адаптера. Чтобы включить его обратно, просто установите галочку возле соответствующего пункта и нажмите Ok.

    Появится список подключений, для которых включен протокол IPv6. Нам понадобится имя (Name) сетевого адаптера.

    Disable-NetAdapterBinding -Name «NAME» -ComponentID ms_tcpip6

    В этой команде вместо «NAME» нужно указать имя подключения (из списка, полученного выше), для которого вы хотите отключить протокол IPv6. Я, например, выполнил отключение для «Беспроводная сеть».

  4. Для проверки вы может снова выполнить команду

    Get-NetAdapterBinding -ComponentID ms_tcpip6

Изменение настоек IPv6 в редакторе реестра

Редактор реестра в Windows так же можно использовать для отключения сетевого протокола IPv6.

  1. Для запуска редактора реестра я рекомендую использовать окно Выполнить (открыть можно сочетанием клавиш Win+R) и команду regedit.

  2. Перейдите в эту ветку реестра: HKEY_Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\TCPIP6\Parameters
  3. Нужно создать новый параметр. Нажмите правой кнопкой на пустую область и выберите Создать – Параметр DWORD (32-разрядное). Задайте ему имя DisabledComponents.

  • It does require certain hardware specifications so if your device is not up for the task, here’s how to easily switch it off.

IPv6 stands for internet protocol version 6, the next generation of internet addressing. It was developed to replace the current Internet Protocol (IPv4). IPv6 is integral to networks because it provides many benefits over its predecessor.

Not every user has warmed up to IPV6, given how long its adoption took. Even though Windows 11 comes with new features that make it ideal for the IPV6 protocol, some still prefer to disable it. If you’re one of them, we show you how to go about it.

Should you disable IPv6 Windows 11?

In the world of the internet, such as gaming and streaming, IPv6 is necessary for the smooth running of a website or application. However, there are some applications where IPv6 is unnecessary, so disabling it can improve your internet speed and security.

  • Increased security and privacy – IPv6 provides increased protection against many network attacks.
  • Better efficiency – The routing tables in IPv4 are very large and thus inefficient, increasing the overhead required for each packet. In contrast, routing tables in IPv6 are much more compact and, thus, more efficient.
  • Improved management of traffic – IPv6 allows for more control over access to the Internet. This can be used for improved quality of service, such as faster website response times or better bandwidth allocation to specific users.

IPV6 has its disadvantages as well:

  • Limited availability – The first disadvantage is that IPV6 is not widely used. It’s still considered an experimental protocol by most countries.
  • Lack of interoperability with older systems and protocols – To support the new version of the Internet Protocol (IP) standard, many older applications and devices must be modified or replaced.
  • Hardware limitations – Not all routers support IPv6, so you won’t be able to use these devices with IPv6 addresses. You must buy new hardware to use IPv6 on your network.

How do I change IPv6 on Windows 11?

1. Use the Control Panel 

  1. Hit the Windows key, type Control Panel in the search bar, and click Open.control-panel-search fallout new vegas runtime error

  3. Navigate to Network and Sharing Center.
  4. Select Change adapter settings.
  5. Right-click on the connection you wish to disable IPV6 and select Properties.
  6. On the Network properties dialog that pops up, uncheck the box beside Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), then click OK.

2. Use the Command Prompt 

  1. Hit the Windows key, type cmd in the search bar, and click Run as administrator.cmd-run-admin-w11 unexpected kernel mode trap windows 11
  2. Type the following commands and press Enter after each one: netsh interface teredo set state disabled netsh interface ipv6 6to4 set state state=disabled undoonstop=disabled netsh interface ipv6 isatap set state state=disabled

3. Use Powershell

  1. Hit the Windows key, type Powershell in the search bar, and click Run as administrator.
  2. Type the following commands and press Enter: Get-NetAdapterBinding -ComponentID ms_tcpip6
  3. Take note of the network adapter you wish to disable in 2 above. Next, type the following command and hit Enter. Remember to replace Ethernet with the name noted in 2: Disable-NetAdapterBinding -Name "Ethernet" -ComponentID ms_tcpip6
  4. If you’d like to confirm whether the command was successful, type the following command. The corresponding entry should be False: Get-NetAdapterBinding -ComponentID ms_tcpip6

4. Use the Registry Editor

  1. Hit the Windows + R keys to open the Run command.
  2. Type regedit in the dialog box, then hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.
  3. Navigate to the following location: HKEY_Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\TCPIP6\Parameters
  4. Right-click on an empty space on the right pane, select New DWORD (32-bit) Value, and rename it as DisabledComponents.
  5. Double-click on DisabledComponents and enter FFFFFFFF as Value data, then click OK. 
  6. Exit the Registry Editor and restart your PC. IPv6 will be disabled.

Don’t forget to create a restore point before you edit the registry so that you can always roll back to a previous point in case an error happens.

How do I know if IPv6 is enabled in Windows 11?

IPV6 comes enabled by default in Windows 11, but if you want to make sure of its status, you can do so by following the steps below:

  1. Hit the Windows key, type Powershell in the search bar, and click Run as administrator.
  2. Type the following command and press Enter: Get-NetAdapterBinding -ComponentID ms_tcpip6
  3. If the corresponding entry next to your Wi-Fi connection is True, then IPV6 is enabled.

Although IPv6 offers much more robust security features such as authentication, privacy, and security, it’s still not widely accepted. It’s great, but if you don’t have the requisite hardware to accommodate it, you’ll experience various problems.

Первый способ с командной строкой вносил изменения в реестр для отключения IPv6, сделать это можно и вручную с помощью редактора реестра:

  1. Нажмите клавиши Win+R на клавиатуре, введите regedit и нажмите Enter — это откроет редактор реестра.
  2. Перейдите к разделу 
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters
  3. Нажмите правой кнопкой мыши в правой панели редактора реестра и создайте новый параметр DWORD (32-бит, даже для 64-бит Windows) и задайте имя DisabledComponents для него.

To disable the IPv6 protocol on Windows 11, use these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Network & internet.

Once you complete the steps, the IPv6 protocol will no longer be available on the system. Although it’s not a requirement, restarting the computer to ensure the changes apply correctly is a good idea. 

How to disable IPv6 from Command Prompt on Windows 11

Warning: This is a friendly reminder that editing the Registry is risky and can cause irreversible damage to your installation if you do not complete the task correctly. It is a good idea to create a backup of the device before proceeding.

To turn off IPv6 using commands, use these steps:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
  3. Type the following command to disable IPv6 on Windows 11 and press Enter: reg add «HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters» /v DisabledComponents /t REG_DWORD /d 255 /f

After you complete the steps, the device will only use the IPv4 protocol on Windows 11.

How to disable IPv6 from PowerShell on Windows 11

To disable the TCP/IPv6 protocol with PowerShell commands, use these steps:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for PowerShell, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
  3. Type the following command to determine the state of IPv6 and the network adapter name and press Enter: Get-NetAdapterBinding -ComponentID ms_tcpip6
  4. Type the following command to disable IPv6 on the adapter and press Enter: Disable-NetAdapterBinding -Name «Ethernet» -ComponentID ms_tcpip6

In the command, replace «Ethernet» with the name of your network adapter.

  1. Type the following command to re-enable IPv6 on the adapter and press Enter: Enable-NetAdapterBinding -Name «Ethernet» -ComponentID ms_tcpip6 

Once you complete the steps, the Internet Protocol version 6 networking feature will be disabled on Windows 11. However, the computer can still access the local network and the internet through the IPv4 protocol.

IPv6 is the next version of the networking protocol to overcome the limitations of IPv4. Primarily, the new version of the protocol deals with the shortage of IP addresses, as IPv4 uses a 32-bit address scheme that offers close to 4.3 billion, and IPv6 uses a 128-bit address scheme that provides trillions of addresses. However, since the transition has been slower than expected, operating systems like Windows run both network stacks simultaneously.

Typically, you should keep the IPv6 protocol enabled, but you may find times when to disable it. However, if you are experiencing networking issues, it’s probably because the protocol has been disabled, in which case, turning it on again may resolve the issue.
