The re-worked graphics and texturing in IGI 2 are far superior to the original game’s boxy interiors and lousy AI. The levels are also bigger and more convincing; vast complex bases and icy arctic wastelands join forces to provide some fun encounters.

Stealth

Set shortly after the events of the first game, IGI 2 finds former SAS soldier David Jones on the trail of international terrorists, as he infiltrates airbases, harbors and secret government installations around the world. Unlike the original, where brute force was often required to take out enemy troops, this time around stealth is the key.

Each level begins with a cut scene that explains your role in the mission, then drops you into the action. Rushing into a base full of guards with machine gun blazing is never a good idea, especially as enemy AI are incredible shots (marking my first IGI complaint), capable of spraying you from ten yards away with an Uzi without missing.

Luckily, you have a variety of weapons at your disposal. Pistols, assault and sniper rifles, submachine guns, miniguns and grenades are all on hand to help you get the job done. And all have been carefully modeled, both in terms of performance and appearance.

Weapons

The player controls a US M16A2 with a grenade launcher. It is incorrectly modeled as a full-automatic weapon, offering only three-round bursts. In this sequel to Innerloop’s Project IGI, rogue Chinese General Wu Xing orchestrates various events in Russia and Libya to steal advanced electromagnetic pulse (EMP) technology to power a new weapons system that he will then hand over to his close comrade Robert Quest. 

David Jones, ex-SAS soldier, is the one man tasked with stopping him, and he must infiltrate airbases, harbors and secret government installations spread across Russia, Libya and China. The game features a variety of military-style firearms and hand-to-hand combat weapons. 

Like the first game, only two guns can be carried at any time, promoting strategic thinking when selecting each mission’s arsenal and limiting the number of firefights. A combat knife is also available, allowing noiseless kills and close-range melee. The Heckler & Koch PSG-1 appears in the game, as does the FN Minimi used by Libyan guards.

Missions

Unlike the typical free-for-all battle royale titles, IGI 2’s missions emphasize stealth over frontal assaults. Instead of wading into a level hoping to shoot everything that’s on screen, you need to skulk around corners and find the best vantage points from which to shoot your targets.

The game’s story revolves around the IGI agent David Jones. He’s a highly skilled officer who is capable of carrying out risky missions without anyone else’s assistance. He’s also portrayed as a fearless officer who doesn’t give up easily during emergency situations.

Developed by Innerloop Studios and published by Codemasters, the video game has a lot to offer its players. Besides the extensive list of features, the game is quite easy to install and run on Windows devices. 

To uninstall the program, you can access its controls from the Control Panel menu. This application is fully compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. Moreover, it doesn’t require any additional files or software to install and run.

Graphics

The game uses a satellite positioning map that lets players zoom in, out, up, down, and around the entire area. This maps shows buildings, terrain, suitable cover positions, and enemies to help players build a strategy. The Windows game also offers a ‘peek’ feature that lets players see over obstacles and in tight spaces.

It is a stealth action game with an engaging story. Ex-SAS soldier David Jones is once again a man with a mission, infiltrating key airbases, harbors, and secret government installations spread across Russia, Libya, and China. Throughout three linked campaigns, Jones relies on stealth, rather than firepower, to penetrate and destroy the enemy.

Despite its stupid name and a host of gameplay problems, IGI 2 does offer some good sneaking action. However, it could be much better with a little more attention to detail and smarter AI. Regardless, it is still a great option for fans of the series or anyone looking for a hassle-free experience with high-quality graphics.
