How to install games for windows live in the same wine prefix as steam?
I’m looking for help on how to install games for windows live in the same wine prefix as I installed steam in. I am looking to play Fallout 3 through steam and I am following this guide: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage…sion&iId=14322 ( Scroll down to get to the how-to ). I have been able to follow all the steps except for installing games for windows live. I installed steam with winetricks so it’s in it’s own wineprefix. So how can I install games for windows live in that same wineprefix? Thank you.

Hello and welcome to the forums.
To install into a specific wine prefix, try something like this:
Code:
WINEPREFIX=/path/to/prefix wine game.exe
Later down in that HOWTO it talks about installing the game using PlayOnLinux. You might want to give that a try — PlayOnLinux is a front-end to wine.

Toz, I tried your solution and got this bug:
(My Username)@(My Hostname):~/Downloads$ WINEPREFIX=/.local/share/wineprefixes/steam wine gfwlivesetupmin.exe /nodotnet
wine: chdir to /.local/share/wineprefixes/steam
: No such file or directory/.local/share/wineprefixes/steam exists because I have seen it in Nautilus File Manager.
Does anyone have an idea of whats going on?

Just wanna point out that you could try PlayOnLinux for that. It pretty much handle things like dealing with multiple Wine-environments (WinePrefixes).

The path is actually $HOME/.local/share/wineprefixes/steam. The way you have it entered shows it existing off the root (/) directory.

It as been discontinued, maybe with some mods

There’s probably some mod or patch that removes the need. Maybe a pirated version? Maybe install the game on Steam, completely close Steam, replace the legit files for the pirated files, then launch the game?

As of latest patch GTA IV doesn’t use gfwl anymore. Rockstar exchanged gfwl to rockstar games launcher (or whatever it is called) and they patched out multiplayer services. So the only option is pirated game and host private server i think.
Fallout 3 from Bethesda Game Studios received a surprise update recently where the developer finally removed Games for Windows Live which is great news.
Released back in 2008, Fallout 3 is something of a classic and a game I thoroughly enjoyed before making the switch fully to Linux. Thanks to Steam Play Proton, you can play Fallout 3 easily on Linux and with this update no workarounds are needed — at all.
Testing out Fallout 3 myself today with Proton Experimental, it worked right out of the box. No launch options required, and where previously some needed to mess around with a dll file — it just works. Even the in-game radio stations appear to now work correctly too which were problematic before.
If you need me I shall once again be exploring the wasteland…
You can buy it on Steam.

Now that Games For Windows Live is gone, how many of the games have patched out GWFL? I’ve recently tested Bioshock 2 in PlayOnLinux and it works! I have a few other games from the GFWL list but of course not all of them. Who wants to help research and re-test some of these games to see if they patched out GFWL? I have:

Yeah. I have looked a bit, and I don’t really see anyone taking about it. That would be sweet if they just worked now. Please: |

Exactly, I’ve had problems with any GFWL game in PlayOnLinux. If publishers or developers want to keep selling their game, they need to patch out the Live service and DRM. Then there is a chance it might work in PlayOnLinux again. I have tested a few of these games with the xliveless Wine or using the xlive.dll Fallout 3 works fine with these, but games like Bioshock 2 and Bulletstorm didn’t. † Booman † |
