What is (l1c63x64.sys) Error and How it Occurs

l1c63x64.sys is a critical system file associated with Windows 10 OS. It basically facilitates interaction between the hardware and either any third-party software programs (Web browsers, Text editors etc) or with the operating system itself. These kinds of files determine the drivers to be loaded on different occasions. If these files experience any trouble, the user’s ability to perform many normal computing tasks such as printing a document will greatly be curtailed.

BSOD-IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

This error mostly occurs during system startup or program startup. It sometimes also occurs when a program is trying to access specific functions of the OS. Mostly this error occurs after a recent hardware or software change, that causes any conflicts with specific Windows actions.

There are several methods you can try out to fix the l1c63x64.sys error. We listed some of the most effective ones for you. Please make sure you perform any actions exactly as they’ve been stated in this article.

Update Device Drivers

Drivers form one of the most integral portions of a computer. They are surely very useful but funny enough, they can often be the root cause of trouble, at times. If any hardware drivers in your PC are either outdated or corrupted, that greatly increases the chances of the error l1c63x64.sys springing up at any moment!

If your computer system was working perfectly fine until recently, but it has started acting up and experiences the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) error quite frequently without any recent software or hardware change been made, the drivers are to be squarely blamed then.

To fix the problem, update the device drivers to the latest available version. You may opt for a manual download and install if you are confident enough.

Perform a Full Malware Scan

Malware can also be blamed for often creating problems in various parts of the computer. The l1c63x64.sys error may be also caused due to malware attacks. So installing a good antivirus program and scanning the entire system periodically may prevent the malware actions and fix the error.

Restore Windows to a Previous Working State

If all the above-mentioned methods haven’t brought you any relief with regards to this error, it is high time to go for a System Restore. This process will actually restore Windows to a previous state where everything worked normally. Here is how you do it:

  1. Open the Start menu
  2. In the search box, type Create a Restore Point and press Enter
  3. Click on the Create a Restore Point option from the search results
  4. Click System Restore button, click Next.
  5. Choose a previous working restore point.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions. Your system will be restarted during the restore process.

Check Hardware for Errors

Some hardware problems might still be there and refuse to go away easily. Due to continuous overuse of your system or unexpected shutdowns, some problems might affect the HD. Such issues can also lead to the l1c63x64.sys error. To resolve this issue, there is an inbuilt utility on windows Check Disk (chkdsk), that automatically checks the hard drive and repairs any corruptions. To run the Check Disk

  1. Go to the Start menu
  2. Type Command Prompt in the search box
  3. Press Ctrl+Shift. Now press Enter
  4. It will show you a confirmation window. Click Yes
  5. Now Command Prompt will open up. Type chkdsk /f and then press Enter
  6. Follow the onscreen commands (if any)
  7. Now chkdsk will start analyzing your hard drive and fix problems

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is a famous Blue Screen of Death error,
often caused by a bad driver somewhere.
The Internet is awash with reports of variants of this error.

This particular variant, L1C63x64.sys,
was an occasional occurrence for me on Windows 7,
but seemingly only while torrenting.

Upgrading to Windows 10 turned the error from occasional to frequent
within the first few days,
prompting me to finally make a serious effort to track down the cause.

When Windows experiences a BSOD
it leaves a diagnostic file in C:\Windows\Minidump.
The first six characters of the file name are the numerical,
zero-padded month, day, and year,
which is both very close to and very far from properly sortable file names.

Minidumps are binary files and so require special tools to inspect.
The Internet is not too helpful in finding out how to read those files.
There appears to be an official Microsoft tool, WinDbg,
but my CS degree was insufficient to figure out how to successfully install it.

I finally came across BlueScreenView,
which immediately gave me all the information I needed,
including presenting the suspect in a red line:

L1C63x64.sys	L1C63x64.sys+6cb3	fffff801`a4080000	fffff801`a40a3000	0x00023000	0x51e4ee9f	16-07-2013 08:56:31	Qualcomm Atheros Ar81xx series PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller	Qualcomm Atheros Ar81xx series PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller	2.1.0.17	Qualcomm Atheros Co., Ltd.	C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\L1C63x64.sys

Note: the driver version appears to be the currently installed version,
not the one implicated in the crash.

Okay, so, a bad ethernet driver.

The not-quite-fix

Trying to update the driver via Windows,
it simply reports that the driver is already the latest version.

According to Google we can find Qualcomm Atheros drivers at https://www.atheros.cz/,
the «unofficial Qualcomm Atheros drivers website». Uh…

The page for network drivers showed that there were no Windows 10 drivers,
but there were 64-bit Windows 8 drivers for my model
and that was bound to be better than the Windows 7 version.
Clicking the relevant link took me to another page that listed all the driver versions,
which also told me that a more recent version number was available.
Unfortunately, clicking the download link, for any of the drivers,
consistently led to a 404
.
The unofficial Qualcomm Atheros drivers website was no more use past this point.

I ultimately managed to find the above driver on Driver Scape
and Windows installed it without complaint.
For the entire next day, not a single crash happened and I thought my troubles solved.

The day after that, exactly the same error manifested and I was a sad panda.

The problem is not solved, however, the driver update has helped a lot.
