There are many old games that are still loved and incredible fun. The classic games have a lot of sentimental value, especially for people who were young when these games were released.
The problem is that the old DOS / MS-DOS games will not start on new Windows computers. To solve the issue, you can use this utility to emulate that environment and play the game. It works in more than 90% of old DOS games.
How to use it to start a game
- create a folder D:\mygames (you can name it as you want). You can create it on D or another drive letter, it does not matter.
- start DOSBOX and type mount c d:\mygames\
This command means mount as c (this is an arbitrary name, it has nothing to do with your actual C drive letter, so no worry) the folder created in the previous step
- then type c: to switch the path into that folder. After that, you must see C:\ at the beginning of the line like in this image.
- type the name of EXE file and the game will begin. If the game is in a folder inside \mygames\ folder, type cd gamefolder
In my case, the game Doom is in \mygames\doom\DOOM.EXE, so I type cd doom, hit Enter, then i type the name of .exe file and hit Enter
Now the game started.
To make the game fullscreen, lick once inside the game screen, then press ALT + ENTER. To reverse, press again the same keys.
DOSBox is licensed as freeware for PC or laptop with Windows 32 bit and 64 bit operating system. It is in virtualization category and is available to all software users as a free download.

Эпоха MS DOS не ушла бесследно, оставив после себя множество полезных программ, а так же сотни игр за прохождением которых многие в юности провели немалое количество времени. Благодаря поддержке графических режимов VGA, VESA, CGA и EGA, а так же звуковых карт SoundBlaster, Gravis, Tandy, AdLib и наиболее распространённого в те годы встроенного в системный блок динамика PC-Speaker (который позволял воспроизводить лишь простейшую музыку), любители «тряхнуть стариной» могут с головой окунуться в мир старых игр для DOS.
Новая версия DOSBox полностью поддерживает более 950 старых игр для DOS, что составляет более 95% от общего количества, имеет открытый исходный код и распространяется полностью бесплатно. С помощью горячих клавиш можно увеличить или уменьшить пропуск кадров, а так же физически замедлить или ускорить игру. Пользователи Windows могут использовать быстрый старт игр и приложений, просто перетаскивая их запускающие файлы в программу DOSBox или на его ярлык, что приводит к их автоматическому запуску. С помощью сочетания клавиш ALT + ENTER можно перевести эмулятор в полноэкранный режим.

I don’t know if DosBox will run any of the old networking software like Novell, 3Com, IBM PC Lan, AT&T Starlan, or Banyan Vines, but it runs everything else quite well. Once you find the configuration file’s location, it’s very easy to edit and customize. It should come bundled with Windows.

I think it’s quite brilliant. A little tricky to set up but it’s been a marvel for me. I’ve wanted to run the old Amstrad Locoscript software and it’s the first completely stable environment I have been able to do so in. I know it’s a but whacky still to be running Locoscript but it’s databases are just brilliant and I can interface with my Libreoffice spreadsheet very easily.
