Docker is making it easier for companies to develop and manage in-house apps. The open source platform allows developers to work on the apps without needing to deal with outside hosting or virtual servers and machines. Docker provides a standardized environment where troubleshooting and updates can be performed without having to deal with limitations such as not having the right hardware or operating system.
Docker has different plans based on the scope and scale of your apps. Follow the instructions below, and I’ll show you how to download Docker Desktop for free.
- Click the Download button on the sidebar, and the official Docker website will open in a new tab.
- Press the Sign up for free button.
- Create a Docker ID, agree to the Privacy Policy, Subscription Service Agreement, and Data Processing Terms and press the Sign Up button.
- You will receive an email to verify your account. Once the verification is complete, you can log in to your account.
- Press the Download for Windows button, and the setup file will automatically download to your computer.
- When the download is complete, you can open the file, and the installation will instantly begin.
- Press the OK button to accept the configuration details.
- When the installation is complete, you will need to restart Windows before you can run Docker.
If Docker Desktop isn’t the right programming tool for your needs, you can uninstall it from your computer in a few simple steps.
- Type Add or Remove Programs in the Windows search bar and press the Enter key.
- Locate Docker Desktop with the installed programs and click Uninstall.
- The uninstallation wizard will open and ask you to confirm you want to delete the software. Once you agree, it will proceed with the uninstallation.

Docker Desktop is an open source software that was designed to make it easier for developers to deploy their apps. It is an all-in-one platform that contains all the different things you would need on a production server, such as a database, web servers, and other dependencies, in one convenient program. This prevents developers from having to worry that the architecture or framework they have aren’t compatible with each other.
Docker Desktop is free for students, instructors, and small businesses that have less than 250 employees, or an annual revenue that is below $10 million dollars.
Docker Desktop has an excellent tutorial that helps new users get familiar with the tools and functions. The software is designed using a Linux based syntax, making familiarity with Linux containers a bonus. If you’re more familiar with Windows, you should be able to adapt to the command line interface (CLI) rather quickly.
The tutorial walks users through the steps needed to execute an app through the Docker interface. This is one of the most important aspects of Docker since the apps run within containers. A container is a Linux kernel that doesn’t take up too many resources and only runs when the program is executed.
Responsive deployment and scaling
One of the big advantages of the container-based platform is that it gives developers the ability to create highly portable workloads. This means that the code can easily be moved from a local file to a virtual machine or a cloud based storage platform. The Docker containers can run on any of these environments or even a mixture of all three.
One advantage stemming from the inherent lightweight characteristic of containers is the streamlined ability to swiftly and effortlessly scale the application. When there’s a requirement to incorporate or eliminate resources, you have the capacity to roll out the application instantly.
Docker Images
Docker images are perhaps the most important feature in Docker. The image is a file that ultimately executes the code in the container. Each image works as a template for building the container. They are similar to a “snapshot” that you would take when using a Virtual Machine.
You can either create your own images or download more than 1,000 images from the Docker Hub
Small sample of Docker Images
Some of the important parts of the image are:
- Base Image: The developer can design this layer by using the build command.
- Parent Image: If the developer doesn’t want to create a base layer, they can use a parent image, which is an image that can be used multiple times and serves as the foundation for all other layers.
- Layers: You can build additional layers of code on top of the Base or Parent Image.
- Container Layer: The image not only creates a container but contains a container layer. The layer tracks all changes and stores all types of new and old files. Additionally, it can be used to customize the container.
The images are hosted in a public or private repository, and they can be shared within the Docker community.
- VirtualBox: Create, design, and test your application in any OS when you use VirtualBox. It’s compatible with cloud storage, so you can always back up your files and ensure that nothing ever gets lost.
- Podman: The open source visualization platform has all the tools you need to create and host your apps. Its unique feature is that the containers don’t require root access and can run in the background since it runs on a daemonless architecture.
Is Docker Desktop free?
Docker Desktop is completely free for students, teachers, and businesses that generate less than $10 million dollars in annual revenue or have fewer than 250 employees. If you fit these criteria, follow the instructions above, and I’ll show you how to create your account and download the software for free.
Is Docker Desktop secure?
All Docker containers have an advanced security setting that keeps your apps secure and prevents unauthorized users from accessing or adjusting your codes. Make sure to download Docker from the official website and enable automatic updates, so you’ll always have the most updated version, and any vulnerabilities that might exist are closed. You can always beef up the security by enabling third-party addons like AppArmor or GRSEC for additional protection.
How many users can use one Docker Desktop subscription?
Each Docker Desktop subscription allowed for just one user. However, there is no limit to the number of computers for each subscription. So you can download and install the software on multiple devices, provided you use your credentials to log in.
