  Thanks! Funny, I used the Wayback Machine to find an old version of the Sysinternals file listing, but couldn’t download from there. How did you find that?

  Be careful with licensing, you are not permitted to run a desktop OS virtually on a remote server without an EA/SA agreement or VDA licenses.

  A datacentre licenses does not cover desktop OSes.

• One can also use a Windows PE boot stick, and work in Windows 10 etc.

  I recently loaded an XP vhd into both WIN 10 and Win 11 Hyper-V without issue.

  This is my go-to. I have a WinPE setup for our imaging solution, and have some extra tools thrown into the boot.wim of it for cases when I need to do something like this. That said, I’ve spent too much of my life learning how to setup WinPE and bend it to my will, haha, but one of the many pre-compiled PE-based boot disks should be able to accomplish this fairly easily. I haven’t used it in a while, but Hiren’s Boot CD used to be pretty good.

  Great!  I needed this today to P2V two VERY old Windows Server 2003 physical machines that I’m FINALLY getting to power off.  The P2V is just to keep a backup of them, we will NOT be running them (hopefully) other than to build the VM and confirm they work before the old hardware goes away.
