Canon RAW Codec is a plug-in software that enables the import and display of Canon RAW image files when installed in Windows 8 32-bit version/Windows 7 (including SP1) 32-bit version/Windows Vista (including SP1/SP2) 32-bit version/Windows XP (including SP3) 32-bit version(*).

Caution
1.Please do not use the Canon RAW Codec and the RAW image processing function of ZoomBrowser EX together.
2.There are cases where the RAW file metadata that was edited under an environment in which Canon RAW Codec 1.7 or later is installed is not available for browsing under an environment in which Canon RAW Codec 1.3 or earlier installed. When sharing a RAW file, use the same version in every environment.
3.Because there has been a change in the RAW image processing for the EOS DIGITAL products, there may be some differences in RAW image display and printing results when comparing with those of Canon RAW Codec 1.3 or earlier.
4.If a Vista PC with Canon RAW Codec installed is upgraded to Windows7, Canon RAW Codec will not function. As a workaround, uninstall Canon RAW Codec first, and then reinstall Canon RAW Codec again after the OS upgrade. (If Canon RAW Codec is installed after the upgrade, there will be no problems.)
Setup instruction
Please refer to the instructions below on how to download and install the software. Exit all other applications when installing this software.
1. Download crc-1-11-0-75r3-7l.zip from the download page.
2. Double-click the crc-1-11-0-75r3-7l.zip file. After decompressing the file, crc_1_11_0_75R3_7L will be created.
3. Double-click crc_1_11_0_75R3_7L to display RC1110UPD_7L.exe.
4. Double-click the RC1110UPD_7L.exe file.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen to perform the installation.

If you untick «Always show icons, never thumbnails» in File Explorer»s View>Options>Folder Options>View>Files and Folders in Windows 10, thumbnail images will now display. Raw Image Extension is available at no charge in the Microsoft Store. Search Raw Image Extension or Codec.

Not true. Rather than «Photos,» my default programs are FastRawViewer for CR3 files and FastPIctureViewer for CR2 and JPG files. All of these photo types display as thumbnail photos when File Explorer is set to display icons larger than small. When it’s set to display Small Icons or Details, the default view program icon (FRV or FPV) for the respective file type shows in the directory list. I installed FRV after acquiring the 1DX III because the codec supplied with the quick but ancient FPV had not been updated; the program would not open CR3 files. With the updated Microsoft codec, FPV can now also open CR3’s.

ACDSEE is and has been my default photo software since the 1980’s! I just checked again. The codec works fine with all my CR2 and CR3 images.

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up. I check the Microsoft Store for an update from time-to-time, but didn’t know about this recent update. Maybe now I can go back to shooting only RAW files. Hopefully this update will work with the R5’s RAW files.

With the updated Microsoft codec, FPV can now also open CR3’s.
FRW has it’s one codec pack and this is not supporting CR3. Do you see a thumbnails of the CR3 file in Windows Explorer with FastRawViewer as default.?
My default program for CR2 is PS 2020 and without FWR Codec Pack and with Raw Image Extension I only get the default thumbnails in Windows Explorer. Only after I make Photo’s the default I get a proper thumbnail but small. Raw Image Extension is displaying the embedded JPG files in DNG or any other RAW extension. Not the actual Raw itself in full size.
