I have a Windows 10 computer (Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.592) and I get an error at shutdown.

The maximum file for session «PerfDiag Logger» has been reached. As a result, events might be lost (not logged) to file «C:\WINDOWS\system32\WDI\LogFiles\ShutdownPerfDiagLogger.etl». The maximum files size is currently set to 20971520.

  • This file, «C:\WINDOWS\system32\WDI\LogFiles\ShutdownCKCL.etl», is set by default to Max 20 MB and neither circular or append options are allowed. The file, for some reason, is extremely protected.

    Now in my case the file grows very fast and fills the event log pretty much, consequently I need to set the file, at least to Max 40 MB or leave it to the original 20 MB and set it to circular.

    There is someone who can solve this mystery.

    The maximum file size for session «Circular Kernel Context Logger» has been reached. As a result, events might be lost (not logged) to file «C:\WINDOWS\system32\WDI\LogFiles\ShutdownCKCL.etl». The maximum files size
    is currently set to 20971520 bytes.

    The protection in the registry is also extremely tied the only one with write permission is Trustedinstaller.
     The owner is set to System but no write permission.

  • did you perhaps use some tool to analyze shutdown performance?
    f.e. in Windows Performance Recorder, running Performance Scenario: Shutdown.
    Or directly use xperf? Perhaps some 3rd party tool?
    This will of course increase the size of the shutdown trace file,
    but should normally only affect a predefinded number of shutdowns.

    And I don’t think the file is protected, it is only not deleteable as long as it is in use by the logger.

    Thank you very much for your answer.

    I did not use any tool, it all started with a fresh install of Windows 10 version 1803.

    The problem was just that ShutdownCKCL grew unusually large after a few shutdowns. I have not found out why, although I have Investigated the issue deeply.

    I’ve fixed the problem by increasing/calibrating the values in

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ ControlSet001 \ Control \ Diagnostics \ Performance \ ShutdownCKCLSettings and
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ ControlSet \ Control \ Diagnostics \ Performance \ ShutdownCKCLSettings
    Key MaxFileSize until the issue was resolved.

    It is true that Maxfilesize can be edited in GUI when the logger is not in use but at first restart, the value will return to default MaxFileSize of 20 MB.

    I was able to increase the bytes. But still get event id 2, 3, 4, I guess they are all related

    Needless to say DISM tool clean bill of health and sfc scannow no errors

    I am trying to debug a very slow login (1.5 minutes after typing in my PIN) on Windows 10 x64 Pro after the May 2020 automatic Windows update. Previously, Windows would log in 10 or 15 seconds. But now, the spinner loop spins for 1.5+ minutes before showing
    me my wallpaper. And even then, it’s another full minute before it shows the desktop icons so I can do anything.

    It’s a newly built machine, only a few months old. Therefore, I think all the drivers are up to date. I updated my GeForce driver anyway.

    I don’t think this error is caused by the May 2020 Windows 1909 update because I have the same error message going back to February 2020, soon after I built the machine. Here is the error in the event log that says why the PerfDiag Logger stopped unexpectedly:

    Session «PerfDiag Logger» stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188

    Frequency of errors: The log has1 in February, 4 in March, 2 in April, 3 in May, and 4 in June (in only two days!).

    I searched the net for the error, but could not find anything. Is there someone on this forum who can tell me how to fix this error? Thank you.

    I found this link. It contains this explanation and a «fix» later in the link. I haven’t tried the regedit fix yet, but I post the thread here as a cross-reference. If this person’s explanation is correct, Microsoft won’t do anything about it.

Достигнут максимальный размер файла для сеанса «PerfDiag Logger». По этой причине события в файле «C:\WINDOWS\system32\WDI\LogFiles\ShutdownPerfDiagLogger.etl» могут быть утеряны (не зарегистрированы). На данный момент максимальный размер файла составляет 20971520 (в байтах).
