How can I enable ping in Windows 10?

1. Use Windows Firewall with Advanced Security

1. Press Windows + R key to open the Run dialog box, type firewall.cpl in the text field, and click OK to open Windows Defender Firewall.
2. Click on Advanced settings from the right pane.
3. Click on Inbound Rules, find and right-click on File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request – ICMPv4 – In) that has a Public Profile, then click on Enable Rule from the drop-down.
4. To know if you have successfully enabled File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request – ICMPv4 – In), check the Enabled tab and confirm if it says Yes.

Enabling the File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request – ICMPv4 – In) option will allow your computer to ping and whether a particular IP address is available in the network or not.

2. Allow File and Printer Sharing through Windows Firewall

1. Press Windows + R key to open the Run dialog box, type firewall.cpl in the text field, and click OK to open Windows Defender Firewall.
2. Click on the Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall option.
3. Click the Change settings button.
4. Check the box for File and Printer Sharing, and click OK to save the changes.

Checking the box for File and Printer Sharing enables the ping functionality on your computer.

3. Use PowerShell

1. Left-click the Start button, type PowerShell, and click Run as administrator.
2. Click Yes on the User Account Control prompt.
3. Copy and paste the following lines of commands and press Enter:  netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Allow ICMPv4" protocol=icmpv4:8,any dir=in action=allow   netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Allow ICMPv6" protocol=icmpv6:8,any dir=in action=allow

The above commands will enable the ping functionality, allowing your Windows PC to respond to ping requests.

4. Use the Command Prompt

1. Left-click the Start button, type Command Prompt, and click the Run as administrator option.
2. Click Yes on the User Account Control (UAC) prompt.
3. Type the following lines of commands and press Enter to run them: netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="ICMP Allow incoming V4 echo request" protocol=icmpv4:8,any dir=in action=allow
4. Close the Command Prompt and restart your PC.

The above commands will create two exceptions to allow traffic through the firewall and allow ping requests.

5. Now, in the Inbound Rules area search for “File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request ICMPv4-In). This rule exists in versions for the profile domain as well as for public and private. They can be activated for a specific profile or several profiles as required. In this option, the private profile allows pining through IP V4 address”.
6. Once you find this predefined rule, right-click on it and select “Enable rule“.
7. After that Windows 10 system could be pinged from a remote or local PC.
8. In the same way, if you are interested in pinging Windows through Domain or IPv6, then select Echo Request ICMPv6 for IP version 6 whereas the same option with Domain Profile will the pinging through the domain name.

Furthermore, if you want to secure pining by restricting it to some particular IP address then after enabling the rule, again right-click on the same and select Properties.

In the Properties dialog select the Scope Tab and to restrict all clients from sending ping requests, click on the Add button and mentioned the Remote IP Address of the only those machines that you want to allow to ping your Windows 10 PC. If there are several NICs on the computer, it is also possible to use local IP addresses to specify those to which requests are allowed.

Allow Windows ping with PowerShell or Command-line Prompt

Those who don’t want to use the GUI method because of the multiple steps involved to allow Ping on Windows can go for command-line one. In which, we just need to run Powershell or Command prompt with Administrative right and after that copy-paste the command given here.

• Click in Windows 10 or 7 search box.
• Type- Powershell or Command prompt
• Then as per your selection of command-line tool, run it as administrator.
• After that simply run the below netsh command to enable ping requests on Windows.

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="ICMP Allow incoming V4 echo request" protocol=icmpv4:8,any dir=in action=allow

Type control panel in the search section of your taskbar and click on the search result to launch a new control panel window. The newly opened Control Panel window is shown in the following image:

Click on the System and Security tab located at the top left corner of the image shown above.

Now click on Windows Defender Firewall as highlighted in the image shown above.

Click on Advanced Settings.
