First the basics why i’m asking this question:
So, i have pretty high-end setup regarding headphones. (HDV820 and HD800S combo).
Getting new iPad Pro 2021 12.9 soon so i can definitely plug it into that. (Don’t know the limitations of iPadOS, can this be done?)
I also have dedicated Intel i5 Nuc running Windows 10 that i (was planning) to install audirvana and use that to feed my DAC. The audirvana App vas remotely controlled from my ipad.
My question:
Now that Apple has released lossless Apple Music. Can Apple Music be streamed with lossless quality someway to external DAC using Win10?
Or do i have to purchase Mac Mini or just plug it into my ipad? (None of these options are ideal. I prefer Win10 over Mac)

It’s disappointing that you can’t even use iTunes on Windows to stream Apple Music Lossless, even though I believe iTunes does support the codec itself (for example when importing a CD).

I was so excited for a new Music app on Windows 10. Guess not gonna happen. Gonna keep streaming AAC on my iPhone and my local lossless library with the outdated iTunes.

I don’t understand how Apple can sell hardware like iPhones/iPads and services like Apple Music, claim them to be «Windows Compatible» and then provide such a shoddy experience.
iTunes for Windows has been a MESS for a long time, let alone the fact it doesn’t support Lossless yet. For example this stupid bug has been an issue for me for years and they still haven’t fixed it. Also I’ve had several Windows computers in my house over the past few years (GOOD ones with high-end hardware) and they’ve been the ONLY devices that won’t reliably stream music to AirPlay devices in my house via iTunes.
I know Apple’s priority is their own hardware but would it really kill them to throw a little bit of that $2T at fixing the Windows version of their software?

Headphones wise I’m using a Apple camera adapter into a Audioquest Colbalt for connecting to my iPhone and iPad.
For external dac you could use the iPad and camera adapter into the usb input into the dac.

Just installed an update on the MS store… still no lossless!! Currently I am using Bluestacks to get the Android app which works and it faster than using the Win10 version.. Only downside is the play/pause and skip hotkeys on my laptop do not work and the app is built for touch.

I have done a bit of research on this. The only way I know how to get Apple Lossless on a DAC while NOT using Apple hardware is to use the Android Apple Music app and use an OTC adapter to connect to a USB cable. The only problem is that I have no way of confirming that the output is truly lossless (that I know of anyway).

Just installed an update on the MS store… still no lossless!! Currently I am using Bluestacks to get the Android app which works and it faster than using the Win10 version.. Only downside is the play/pause and skip hotkeys on my laptop do not work and the app is built for touch.
What quality does the Bluestacks output at? I thought emulators throttle the quality. I too use it and find it slightly better, but not sure it is «true» lossless.

Apple makes money off hardware, are you that surprised they don’t care about windows? You’re lucky you get anything.
If they removed iTunes on Windows there would be grounds for refunds of corresponding purchases.
For example if they removed iTunes on Windows, and you used it to sync music to your iPhone — they are essentially disabling you from accessing features you paid for.
Under Australian Consumer Laws, you would be eligible for refunds.
They won’t do that.

Good afternoon, have you found a solution to your problem? If not, I can recommend using the web version of Apple Music. My USB digital audio converter plays lossless audio through the browser. Try it, you can listen to Apple Music on Windows 10 too!

Web version of Apple Music doesnt let you see/control what quality of audio you are playing.
I have had a pretty bad time with the web browser..
Not to mention it doesnt have any native app features like iTunes on Mac has

Will paying users be able to listen to Apple music in lossless quality on their computer? Because if there is no such option, it is discrimination for those who do not have an Apple device, yet you can pay for your Apple music service without it.

I started a trial Apple Music subscription using my Windows PC which I didn’t realize I could do (thank you Jeff_W.) BUT there is no «Settings» section in the menu. Everything I’ve read states there is no app for PCs or even for my «smart» TV (SONY Bravia) which means there’s no lossless. So is the music I’m listening to not Lossless? How can I check? (Other than comparing to my CDs). I have great speakers and before I commit to Apple Music I want to make sure the new music I want to listen to is lossless, otherwise I’ll continue to buy CDs. Thanks to all for any help.

Thanks to the rollout of Apple Music Lossless on Android, you can now listen to Apple Music Lossless through an android emulator like Bluestacks or Android Studio.
It works well but I don’t know if this is going to support Dolby Atmos in the future tho but for now this is a good backup while we wait for Apple to hopefully add Apple Music Lossless and Spatial Audio support on iTunes or maybe release a new Apple Music app for Windows.

It’s hardly discrimination as there is no extra cost for lossless. It was offered free to existing subscribers

if the functions offered by the service are not the same across the devices, there is discrimination and therefore I asked when the format will be lossless on the PC. Because I mainly use Apple music on a PC. And it is completely irrelevant that some feature came into service for free. Apple music is on a PC and the lossless format should be there as well, and I want to know when it will be. That is all.

Nope. If the service offered differs for different people, that is discrimination. The service is the same for everyone

the service is currently not the same for everyone, those who do not have an Apple device but only have a PC, they cannot hear music in lossless quality but only in lossy AAC format. And I want to listen to PC music in lossless quality and at the moment I can’t.

Last response as you seem to have a tenuous grasp of the word discrimination, and how you are offered exactly the same service as everyone else. I have a Mac. If I listen on Mac, I get lossless. If you listen on Mac, you get lossless. You have a PC. If you listen on PC, you don’t get lossless. If I listen on PC, I don’t get lossless. Therefore the exact same service is offered to both of us. Just because your device does not support a feature being offered, does not mean you are being offered something different. You are free to choose any device you like.
It’s like saying that Sony are discriminating against PS4 users by offering PS5 games on PS+, when you don’t own a PS5. The service is the same for everyone. You just need a compatible device.
I hope this helps. As I said. I will not be responding any further. The app is on its way to PC. If you can’t wait, you are free to use a compatible device, or subscribe to a lossless service that is compatible with you device.
But to answer your original post, yes you will, but not yet.

Currently, the situation is such that subscribers who do not own an apple product are disadvantaged and that is a fact. iTunes is capable of converting CDs to ALAC format on a PC and playing them, so there should be no reason to limit the ALAC format to Apple devices only. And the difference between ALAC and AAC is huge, at least for me. I just don’t understand why it’s not on the PC, especially if they have apple music for web browsers as well.

I believe if you go to music.apple.com and use that instead of iTunes on Windows, you’ll get that.

It is possible to play 24/192 on windows, Apple is just not considering other peoples view and diversity.

Well a PC is very capable of doing it, apple has just chosen not to make software (or the web site) for the PC.

How do we know? The albums are not displayed as «lossless or Hi Res», there is no indication of what format you are listening to. Am I to go on faith that Apple is delivering the highest quality? Sorry I need proof. For what is is worth I have an un-used ipad, I connected an external DAC and connected to my pure Class A HiFi and I do hear the difference. Since I am not going to hear the difference (IMO) in my car or with Headphones I am not worried about it too much, and $14.99 for a family plan who can beat that?

I too would like to see the lossless and hi-res formats now included with an Apple Music subscription accessible via my Windows PC versus the compressed 256 AAC format. Our family has iphones and Ipads and I can hear an audible quality difference with Apple Music in their new lossless and hi-res settings, using an external DAC and decent headphones with those devices. By comparison, when I listen to Apple Music via my Windows PC in their only available lossy format, it sounds much lower quality to me. Since I’m paying the same subscription price as both Windows PC and Mac users, why does Apple not make the new features (free or not) available to PC users? The new features are now part of the expected, overall feature set and for some, part of the decision whether to subscribe to Apple Music or some other lossless or hi res service, including Amazon HD Music, which by the way, offers lossless and hi res and as far as I know, is «device neutral».

Spatial Audio and Lossless audio is propriety to specific devices and headphones used. Only a few devices and headphones can take advantage of it and all are owned by Apple. Just because you have MAC or iPhone does not mean you will have access to them either.
I think what everyone wants lossless music that is not tied to a specific platform. Apple is known to tie software and hardware together. Time will tell I guess.

This is a late but you do have access to lossless audio on windows. You have to go to edit>preferences>playback. From there you can choose audio, sample rate, and bits per sample. These will all changed to lossless and if I remember correctly the high res would be the 24/192
Lossless Apple music on PC
One of the few perks of Apple Music over Spotify is Lossless audio. If you have a Windows PC, however, you miss out on the excellent audio quality Apple Music has to offer. iTunes, the only official Apple Music app on Windows, does not support lossless audio. You can still get Apple Music lossless on Windows 11.
Let’s begin.
Install Apple Music Android App on Windows 11
The only non-Apple platform that supports Apple Music lossless audio is Android. Windows 11 happens to be able to run Android apps. So, you simply need to install the Apple Music Android app on Windows 11. Although there are many ways to get Apple Music on Windows PC, you need to install the Android app for Apple Music to get a lossless music experience.
Currently, Windows 11 does not support Android apps on stable builds. But we already have a detailed guide to help you to install Android apps on Windows 11. Even when Android apps are officially available on stable Windows 11, there won’t be any Google Play Store. Windows 11 features the Amazon App Store, which does not have Apple Music.
You can download the Apple Music APK from reliable sources online. The good thing is Apple Music does not depend on Google Play Services, so it will work on Windows 11. Once you have the APK and have installed WSA (Windows Subsystem for Android), follow the steps below.
- Press the Windows key and type Windows Subsystem for Android to search for it.
- Open Windows Subsystem for Android.
- Click on Files at the top to open the built-on File manager app and start the Android layer.
- Scroll down and toggle on Developer mode.
- Click the Refresh button next to IP address.
- Click Copy to copy the IP address.
- Launch Terminal from the start menu.
- Enter this command to connect using ADB.
adb connect <IP Address>- Replace <IP Address> in the above command with the copied IP address using a right-click. For example,
adb connect 172.30.241.207

- Next, type
adb install, press space, then drag and drop the downloaded APK file into the Terminal and hit Enter. - Once Apple Music is installed, you will see a Success message in the Terminal.

Get Apple Music Lossless on Windows 11
Not that you have the Apple Music Android app, you can simply turn on Lossless audio in the settings. Here is how to get Apple Music Lossless on Windows PC by switching it on from the Apple Music app.
- Launch the Apple Music Android app from the Windows 11 Start menu.
- Sign in to your Apple Music account.
- Click on the three-dot menu button in Library.
- Select Settings > Audio Quality.
- Turn on the toggle next to Lossless Audio.
- When you do that, you’ll notice it enabled a couple more options right below it.
- Tap on Wi-Fi Streaming, Downloads, or Mobile Data Streaming.
- Select Lossless or Hi-Res Lossless.
Needless to say, Lossless audio uses more data, so you may not want to turn it on for Mobile Data Streaming. If you don’t have plenty of storage, you might also want to avoid turning it on for Downloads. But when you have Lossless audio enabled, you will see the Lossless tag on the songs you play.

Apple is quite innovative with the new feature and quality and recently they have developed AAC (Advanced Audio Codec) that delivers audio that’s virtually indistinguishable from the original studio recording. And Apple Music subscription gives free option to stream lossless audio.
Apple Music subscribers are expected to have access of all songs using lossless audio compression but some iTunes users are windows are facing issue that iTunes in Windows only allows to download the 256kbps AAC versions not the lossless version.
Even the official page also does not give any information on on how to play lossless audio on Windows, lossless audio in Apple .
Why Apple music lossless Audio not supported and how to fix it ?
if you are looking for a way to play the lossless audio in Windows then please note that currently iTunes for Windows does not support lossless playback from Apple Music. You can only find and play lossless ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) files on iTunes Macs. Apple Lossless audio will not work in the Windows because ALAC(Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC)) in resolutions ranging from 16-bit/44.1 kHz (CD Quality) up to 24-bit/192 kHz.
Still the Apple does not support lossless Apple Music subscriptions on a Windows PC. Surely The Apple should work in the issue and provide a fix in the iTunes itself.
But the good news is to play lossless audio on Windows, Apple have released the apple music preview app onto the Microsoft store. With this app you can get lossless audio to work on the Windows 11. The application is new so expect some bugs. It works as good as iTunes.

What are the chances of people switching to Mac because of lack of Apple Music support for windows compared to the chances of PC people switching to a different music streaming service because of lack of Apple Music support for windows???
Moreover, these kind of media services are the only way to lure people slowly into their icosystem — one service at a time. Get people to love Music, FaceTime, Messages, TV etc., Once they start using all of their services, they’d realize it makes sense to use a Mac/iOS device and leave their counterparts.
